Record Labels Are Not Scams — The Real Question Is, Do You Understand the Business?

In today’s fast-evolving music industry, many artistes are quick to call record labels “scams” when, in reality, the problem often lies in a lack of understanding and preparedness. It’s important to realize that no artiste, no matter how talented, makes it to the top alone. Behind every global sensation is a powerhouse of visionaries, managers, strategists, marketers, producers, and investors.

Success in music isn’t just about talent, it’s about building the right team that helps transform your talent into value.

While the internet and social media have revolutionized access to audiences, virality is fleeting without a strong foundation. A structured team, especially one provided by a label, offers stability, funding, mentorship, and long-term career planning.

Yes, you might go viral on TikTok, but how will you maintain relevance a year later?

That’s exactly where your team comes in, to turn moments into movements, and fans into lifelong supporters.

It’s time artistes stopped demonizing the very structure that gives their careers wings. Record labels are not evil empires, they are business entities investing massive resources, sometimes over N100 million, into developing your brand, image, and product.

Think about it:
Your family won't throw that amount of money at your career without assurance. So you don't expect a business entity to do so blindly? It’s not just music, it’s music business.

Many artistes jump into contracts without legal advice or a full understanding of what they’re signing, then turn around and play victim. A contract is a business agreement, not a favor. If you don’t understand it, ask questions.

Get a lawyer. Get a mentor. The moment you sign, you’re saying, “I agree to these terms.” You can’t tear the paper and expect applause for defiance, that’s not how professionalism works.

The global music economy is one of the fastest-growing sectors that values intellectual property, branding, and business ethics. If you, as an artiste, reject knowledge, mentorship, and structure, how do you expect to thrive in an industry driven by business decisions?

Record labels offer more than just money, they offer systems. Systems that protect your craft, monetize your content, and keep you competitive in a global marketplace.

Before you criticize a label or idolize independence, educate yourself. Not every artiste is meant to go independent, and not every label is evil. The goal is sustainability. The industry is a jungle, filled with talent, but only those with wisdom and structure survive. Open your eyes, learn the business, build relationships, and respect the platforms that elevate your voice.

Let's stop here for now.

To the Esteemed Citizens of Plateau State and Beyond.

It is with a deep sense of responsibility and unwavering commitment to truth and integrity that we address the ongoing situation involving Miss Vivian Bwehmana Matur and the Honourable Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Kudangbena Dewan. The matter at hand is one of immense gravity and calls for a reflection not only on the actions of individuals but also on the greater societal values that we all must uphold.

Defamation is not merely an act of malice; it is an attack on the very fabric of trust and respect that binds a community together. To tarnish the reputation of a leader, especially one as distinguished as Rt. Hon. Gabriel Kudangbena Dewan, is an affront not only to the individual but to the dignity of the office he holds and to the citizens he serves. As the third-highest citizen of Plateau State, the Honourable Speaker is an embodiment of leadership, integrity, and dedication. His tireless contributions to the development and peaceful coexistence of our people have been unparalleled, and his efforts to elevate the lives of the citizens of Plateau speak volumes of his commitment and character.

We, at the Original Jos Boiz Movement, are deeply disappointed by the reckless actions of Miss Vivian Bwehmana Matur, who, without regard for the consequences, engaged in spreading damaging and baseless allegations about the Honourable Speaker. Her accusations, suggesting that Rt. Hon. Dewan is involved in immoral activities and questioning the future of his legacy and that of his generation, are not only false but are a stark violation of the ethical standards we expect of one another as citizens of Plateau and Nigeria.

It is important to recognize the harmful effects such actions can have on the fabric of our society. When we choose to disregard truth in favor of sensationalism and personal vendettas, we risk eroding the very trust that sustains our communities. The Honourable Speaker, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Kudangbena Dewan, has proven himself to be a man of principle, a man who rose from humble beginnings to occupy one of the most respected positions in the state. His integrity has been the foundation of his career, and no amount of defamation can diminish the esteem in which he is held by the people who know him and those who benefit from his leadership.

For those who may be supporting Miss Vivian Matur in her unfounded allegations, it is crucial to understand the importance of supporting truth and righteousness. To stand by a person in such a situation is to turn a blind eye to the consequences of their actions. It is to endorse falsehoods that only serve to divide and destabilize the peace that has been so carefully nurtured in Plateau State. We urge you to reconsider your stance and, instead, join us in standing firmly for the values of truth, integrity, and respect.

While we acknowledge the hurt and harm that Miss Vivian Matur has caused, we must also appeal to the nobility of Rt. Hon. Gabriel Kudangbena Dewan’s heart. We plead for his mercy, compassion, and for the strength to forgive. As a global ambassador for peace and a man who has built his career on service to others, it is in his hands to model the very virtues that we hope to instill in the next generation of leaders.

To Miss Vivian Bwehmana Matur, we implore you to take this as an opportunity to reflect deeply on the consequences of your actions. In a society that values integrity, dignity, and respect for one another, it is never too late to learn from mistakes and seek redemption. The journey towards personal growth and maturity begins with acknowledging the impact of one’s words and actions, and making amends where necessary. We hope that you will take this time to recognize the gravity of your actions and extend a heartfelt apology to the Honourable Speaker for the distress caused.

We want to remind the people of Plateau State, and indeed, all Nigerians, that we are all responsible for the health of our society. We must lead with honesty, courage, and compassion, fostering a culture of respect for one another’s dignity and contributions. In times of conflict, let us be guided by truth and fairness, remembering that every individual, especially our leaders, deserves to be treated with the respect befitting their office and role in society.

Finally, to Honourable Speaker, Rt Hon Dewan Gabriel, know that the people of Plateau State are proud of your leadership. You are a symbol of hard work, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to the service of others. May you continue to lead with the same integrity and wisdom that has brought you this far, and may you find peace and strength in knowing that the truth always prevails.

The Original Jos Boiz Movement stands with you, and we urge the citizens of Plateau and beyond to support our leaders, to uplift those who serve us, and to always act in ways that reflect the best of who we are as a people.

Signed:

Talent hunts used to be so competitive amongst the creatives, very much educating, challenging and inspiring unlike today, where you get bored with horrible organizers, judges and participation schemes.

You'll find it very difficult to even identify the organizers of the event during the event.

The crowd in attendance used to be the primary judges. The decorated judges had no power over examinations, they only affirmed what the crowd are all up to.

Unprofessionalism has become our major setback in the entertainment scene, and until we learn, evolve and change the narratives, these artistes will continue to be doomed, robbed and most importantly stagnant.

Every musician wants to meets the global market's standard, which means that you're not alone. Millions of talents out there.

If you don't know the basics, even your parents won't invest in that thing you called music.

It's a business, a popular one at that.

So get to work...

A CALL TO ACTION FOR THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY IN JOS.

Let us acknowledge the legends who put Jos on the global entertainment map: Panam Percy Paul, Jeremiah Gyang, MI Abaga, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz. These pioneers were the driving forces behind the creative energy that once radiated from Jos, propelling it onto the international stage. Their efforts were monumental, yet today, Jos' once-thriving entertainment scene seems to have lost its place in the limelight.

What went wrong? Why is it that while Jos was once the cradle of creativity, it now lags behind cities like Port Harcourt and the almighty Lagos of today?

The Jos entertainment industry’s downfall cannot be ignored. What was once a hub of musical and artistic brilliance now struggles to maintain relevance. The entertainment scene today is not only fiercely competitive but also political and deeply sentimental. These factors have created barriers that even the biggest names in the industry struggle to overcome.

What we’re facing today is a collective crisis, a failure to sustain the momentum built by these legends. Jos, despite its rich history, has not managed to create the necessary infrastructure or platforms to nurture the new generation of talents, those who should now be carrying the torch. Our talents continue to go to Lagos, hoping for a breakthrough, but return with little more than disappointment because there’s no sustainable foundation for them to thrive in their own hometown.

The efforts of Jos entertainment pioneers are commendable, but they need to evolve.

Dr. Panam Percy Paul created an institution to nurture emerging talent, but the question remains: Where are the stars of tomorrow who can stand alongside Frank Edwards, Mercy Chinwo, or Nathaniel Bassey?

Jeremiah Gyang’s unwavering commitment to representing Christ in his music is inspiring, but where is the platform that elevates his example into a full-fledged industry standard?

MI Abaga , though a global icon, left us with an industry that hasn’t seen the major shifts needed to create a lasting, sustainable entertainment market in Jos.

Ice Prince used his fame to open doors for the industry, but how many long-term opportunities did he help secure for local creatives?

And what about JESSE JAGZ ? While he has made tremendous contributions to the industry, did he fully cultivate and mentor young talents in Jos to prepare them for the challenges of the modern music industry?

Let us be clear: I am not dismissing the contributions these legends have made. They’ve paved the way for our current and future talents.

However, it's time we reflect critically on what has held us back and why the progress has not been as significant as it could have been. The truth is, while we owe them a debt of gratitude, we must also ask ourselves how we can do better and move forward.

Jos has the potential to reclaim its place as the creative epicenter of Nigeria. We are too talented to be overlooked, too innovative to be sidelined, and too important to be forgotten. Our legacy is rich, but it’s time to build on it. It’s time for a renaissance.

To my fellow creatives: We have the power to bring Jos back to the forefront. But this requires strategic thinking, commitment, and a collective effort. It is not enough to complain about the lack of opportunities. It is time to create them. Let’s stop wasting our resources on frivolous pursuits and instead invest in our future.

Stop squandering your resources on unproductive ventures, whether it’s reckless spending, gossiping, or engaging in harmful behavior.

Invest in your craft. Learn the business of music, understand the dynamics of the digital world, and use the internet to your advantage.

Embrace innovation. The music industry is expensive, yes, but it is also a business. Treat it as such. Find ways to invest in creative businesses that sustain and uplift the industry.

Focus on collaboration and community. The future of Jos entertainment depends on our ability to work together and support each other.

We have everything we need to succeed right here in Jos, raw talent, ambition, and a rich cultural heritage. What we need is direction, commitment, and the will to forge a new path.

This is our moment. If we work together, we can redefine Jos as the entertainment powerhouse it once was and more. Let’s be intentional about how we use our resources, build meaningful platforms, and create an environment where our talents can truly flourish.

Jos is too good to be lost in the shadows. Let’s rise, reclaim our value, and bring our creative power to the global stage once again. We can do this!

Yours sincerely,

Plateau Men Are Jos Not Lazy!

Recently, in a street interview, a young lady made a shocking statement that perpetuated a harmful and false narrative about the people of Jos, particularly the men. She described them as lazy, suggesting that they could elevate themselves by engaging in businesses like agriculture, poultry farming, or even drink shops, because, according to her, "Jos people actually drink a lot." As if this shallow observation were enough to explain the economic capabilities of an entire community. What she failed to grasp, however, was the irony in her argument.

How can a supposedly lazy people manage to gather the resources necessary to start a business? If they're lazy, where does the money come from?

What makes this even more disheartening is the fact that this young woman is herself a (proud) daughter of Plateau, a (true) Jos lady. For her to speak so negatively about her own people is not only puzzling but deeply concerning. It's one thing for outsiders to hold prejudiced views, but for someone from within the community to contribute to such disparaging stereotypes is a tragedy.

How do we reconcile the pride of being from Jos with the urge to tear it down for the sake of fleeting fame or some misguided sense of humor?

Scrolling through the comments on social media, I was astounded by the widespread reception this statement received. In a society where negativity often garners the most attention, it seems that a person can become a viral sensation by demarketing their own home. To think that the very same people who speak ill of their own state are now being celebrated by the masses is a troubling reflection of how far we've come in a world obsessed with shallow trends. The fact that a woman would gain popularity by undermining her heritage is not just disappointing, it’s a call for introspection.

Unfortunately, this trend of self-deprecation is nothing new in Jos. Our people, for reasons I cannot fully comprehend, have developed a tendency to magnify negativity in the pursuit of validation. Jos has long been known for its peace, unity, creativity, hard work, and ingenuity. These traits have been the bedrock of our success, not only in Nigeria but on a global scale.

But what has happened to the collective pride that once defined us?

When did we lose sight of the values that made us who we are?

If there's one thing I've learned, it's this:

If you don't celebrate yourself, no one else will.

The world will never recognize your worth if you constantly degrade it for likes, shares, or fleeting attention. And yet, many Jos people have fallen into the trap of allowing outsiders' opinions to shape our self-image. It's not just about a business or a tweet, it's about our identity. If we don't protect and nurture that identity, then who will?

We’ve been blessed with a rich history that speaks of resilience, creativity, and relentless perseverance. Why would we let that legacy be overshadowed by ignorance or misguided attempts at humor?

Let us not forget that it is not laziness that has given Plateau people global recognition. It is our indomitable spirit, our hardworking nature, and our commitment to excellence. Whether it's in the agricultural sector, the arts, or business, Plateau people have consistently proven their mettle. Those who have had the privilege of traveling know that no one has ever attained success by devaluing their roots. It is only by embracing and celebrating where we come from that we can reach our fullest potential.

Plateau people have been known for their hard work, and we will continue to be a shining example of what perseverance can achieve. Our society, despite its challenges, is marked by a low crime rate compared to other states, and that alone speaks volumes about the integrity and diligence of our people. Instead of allowing ourselves to be swayed by negativity, let's redirect our energy towards celebrating the achievements, values, and virtues that have brought us this far. Together, we can ensure that Jos continues to be recognized not for its flaws, but for its enduring strength and character.
