Despite Lingering Goal Drought, Boniface Remains Part Of Eagles Squad – Eguavoen
As Victor Boniface keeps struggling to make an impact in the Supers Eagles team, coach Augustine Eguavoen has assured the Bayer Leverkusen star that he remains part of the squad.
Boniface endured another frustrating outing as the Eagles were condemned to an embarrassing defeat by Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in their last Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game on Monday.
Asked if he would continue giving the striker a call to the national team despite his obvious struggles, Eguavoen said, “Boniface, we all know what he is capable of doing, especially for his club, and then when he comes back here, we try to give him a lot of confidence, and a lot of playing time but he is not hitting the back of the net for whatever reason.
“I have spoken to him personally, I am someone who wants to give players confidence, I have done enough, but he is still part of the squad, and he will remain part of the squad.”
Boniface form with the national team shows a sharp contrast when compared with his club form. He has banged in 8 goals and 1 assist in 15 appearances for his club in all competitions so far this season. 6 of the goals are in the Bundesliga which placed him third in the scorers' chat, with Bayern’s Harry Kane and Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush ahead of him with 11 goals respectively.
Despite injuries disrupting him last season, Boniface still hit 22 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions last season, helping Leverkusen to win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal unbeaten and reaching the Europe League final which they lost to Atalanta thanks to Ademola Lookman’s brilliant hat-trick.
Rwanda produced a remarkable comeback to defeat the more fancied Nigerians who took the lead through a brilliant solo effort from Samuel Chukwueze.
However, two quick-fire goals from the Amavubi silenced the Nigerian home crowd and handed a historic win to the Rwandans.
Monday’s defeat to Rwanda, however, did not affect the Nigerian team’s qualification, as they had already topped the group with 11 unassailable points even before the match.
The victorious Rwanda were tied on 8 points with Benin Republic but fell short with an inferior goal difference, leaving Benin to qualify from the group alongside Nigeria.
