When last did you eat fish fresh from the great Oshimili River?

*Ife oma julu Oshimili*

Can you mention the names of the fishes you see in this video?

In Ogbahu, a meal often begins with the return of fishermen, proudly bringing home their catch, while others head to the market for the day’s best.

We met a remarkable woman who has spent years in the fish trade, her hands tell the story, her eyes sparkle with experience.

She didn’t just sell fish; she shared a treasure trove of knowledge, revealing the unique names and heritage behind each one.

Every bite is not just food, it’s history, culture, and the taste of Ogbahu’s waters.

Azu si Oshimili na a*o uso!

Atutu Inu Ogbahu comes with wisdom, values, and deep ancestral meaning.

It's not just words, it's the soul of our identity.

Through the UMU ANYI Program, Inu Ogbahu is being taught, preserved, and passed on to refresh our collective memory and strengthen our cultural roots.

Let’s share it with our loved ones.
Let’s encourage every child around us to learn and speak Inu Ogbahu with pride.

WE ARE VICTIMS OF CIRCUMSTANCES!

If you are still doubting that we are OGBAHU and never Ogbaru, here is the prove of what happened to other Igbo towns.

Igbo Communities Renamed by the British During the Colonial Era.

During the colonial era, several Igbo communities had their names changed by the British due to difficulties in pronouncing the original names. Below are some of these communities and their original names:

1. Owerri — Original Name: Owe Ere

2. Orlu — Original Name: Ọlụ

3. Awkuzu — Original Name: Ọkụ Ụzọ Achagbunam

4. Umuleri — Original Name: Umueri

5. Okigwe — Original Name: Oka Igwe

6. Enugu — Original Name: Enu Ugwu (meaning “mountain town”)

7. Okpala — Original Name: Ọkpụ Ala Ngwa

8. Port Harcourt — Original Name: Igwe Ọcha

9. Opobo — Original Name: Igwe Nga

10. Bonny — Original Name: Ubani

11. Oyigbo — Original Name: Obi Igbo

12. Abakaliki — Original Name: Aba Nkeleke

13. Mbaise — Original Names: Agbaaja, Ahiara, Ekwerazu, Oke Ovoro, Ezinihite

Initially, these were five independent villages, but the British combined them into one community, “Mbaise,” despite their distinct cultural identities.

14. Asaba — Original Name: Ahaba

15. Onitsha — Original Name: Onicha

16. Ibusa — Original Name: Igbo Ụzọ

17. Ogwashi — Original Name: Ọgwa Ahi

This community traces its origins to the ancient Nri Kingdom.

18. Awka — Original Name: Oka

19. Awkunanaw — Original Name: Okunnano

20. Amawbia — Original Name: Amaobia

21. Umuahia — Original Name: Ọma Ahịa

These name changes reflect the impact of British colonization on Igbo communities, as the colonizers often altered indigenous names to fit their own linguistic preferences, erasing elements of the local heritage in the process.

WE ARE OGBAHU!

They tried to take everything but they couldn’t take the Ogbahu in me.

It's my bloodline, my rhythm, my pride.

When the dust settled, I was left standing, with only one thing on my lips, praises to Chukwu Abiama!
For preserving my identity, for keeping me rooted, for the grace to keep rising.

We are Ogbahu!
We survive, we thrive, and now, we plan Egwu because celebration is our testimony.

May your life be blessed, richly and always.
