OKE MARIA
Oke Maria is a sacred hilltop and Catholic pilgrimage site located in Oka-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area, approximately 113 kilometres from Akure, the Ondo State capital southwestern Nigeria,
The site is often referred to as “Mary’s Hill” because of the statue of the Virgin Mary placed on the hilltop by Catholic faithful. It serves as a Catholic grotto and a place of prayer, where visitors climb the hill to pray, meditate, and seek spiritual favours.
Annual Pilgrimage
The Oke Maria Pilgrimage is an annual event held every second week of February, particularly on the second Saturday and Sunday of the month. During this period, the site hosts a major gathering of Christians, primarily Catholics, though believers from other denominations also participate.
Pilgrims ascend the hill in prayer, participate in Mass and other devotional activities, and share in communal worship. The climb itself is regarded as both a physical and spiritual journey, with designated resting points along the path to accommodate participants.
Cultural and Tourism Value
While primarily a religious destination, Oke Maria also contributes to local tourism and the economy. During major pilgrimage events, visitors bring commercial activity to surrounding communities, supporting local businesses and hospitality services.
