PRESIDENT TINUBU CONFERS NATIONAL HONOUR ON WAFCON-WINNING SUPER FALCONS, CASH REWARDS, HOUSING

President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on all 24 players and the 11-member technical team of Nigeria's senior women's national football team, the Super Falcons, following their historic victory at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

At the presidential reception held in their honour, President Tinubu awarded each player and technical crew member the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

He also directed the allocation of one three-bedroom apartment to each player and technical crew member in the government's Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.

The President approved a cash award of the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each of the 24 players, and $50,000 equivalent to each technical team member.

"You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable.

"You have inspired me, too. And it's great for a nation to have assets that are the hope of today, tomorrow, and the day after. You represent that hope. You ignited that hope. And we will continue to encourage you, the next generation, and other generations after you,'' President Tinubu said amid cheers from the jubilant team.

The President recounted the emotional moments of the final match, noting how the team's performance lifted the nation's spirits and united Nigerians from all walks of life.

"Your victory represents more than a sporting accomplishment. It is a triumph of courage, determination, discipline, and consistency.

"Honestly, I didn't want to watch the match. I didn't want to have high blood pressure. But people came in and turned my TV on that channel. When it was 2-0, I got very offended and restless.

"But I was still watching with the spirit of resilience, determination, and courage. And after that penalty, my strength was lifted, and I believe that of the nation was lifted too.

"But you almost made me angrier because your mother (the First Lady) was in the kitchen, nearly abandoning my dinner.

''She doesn't watch the game except when the girls are playing. And at the end of the final whistle, it was joy all over the country,'' he said.

The President assured the team of his administration's continued support and commitment to sports development, pledging that the government would invest further in women's football and youth talent development across the country.

"Your story is a story of hope. And in this era of Renewed Hope, we celebrate you not just as champions of Africa, but as champions of the Nigerian dream."

In a further show of appreciation, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF), Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, also announced a donation of ₦10 million to each of the players and technical team members on behalf of the 36 state governors.

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, described the Super Falcons as role models and shining examples of courage and excellence.

She congratulated the team for their exceptional performance and unwavering spirit, describing their journey as "a testament to resilience, teamwork, and determination."

"You played with passion, confidence, and an unshakeable belief in yourselves—that it is not over until it is over.

"The zeal you displayed on the pitch was nothing short of inspirational. You never wavered and reminded the world why Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women's football."

The First Lady prayed for the team's continued success and shared an earlier conversation with President Tinubu about the team's bright future as world champions.

"I told Mr. President this morning that you are going on to win the World Cup, and he thought I was too ambitious. But Ajibade, the team captain, just seconded that, and that is possible," he said.

Super Falcons Captain Rasheedat Ajibade said the victory was for the team and for every Nigerian girl who dreams of achieving greatness.

"Today, I stand before you not just as the captain of the Super Falcons, but as a proud daughter of Nigeria, carrying the dreams, resilience, and spirit of our great nation," she said.

"On behalf of my teammates, coaches, and technical staff, I express our heartfelt gratitude for this warm reception and the unwavering belief you have shown in us."

Emphasising the significance of their 10th WAFCON title, the team captain said:

"This victory is not just a trophy. It is a testament to the unyielding spirit of Nigeria. It is a celebration of every young girl in our villages, towns, and cities who dares to dream… This 10th title is for you, Mr. President, for Nigerians, for Super Falcons, and for every young child who believes and dreams to be on this stage someday."

Ajibade called for continued support from the government and stakeholders to elevate Nigeria's global standing in women's football.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the team's victory as a symbol of national unity, inspiration, and the triumph of belief, courage, and excellence.

Dikko credited President Tinubu's administration with investing in sports development and women's empowerment.

"The Super Falcons' triumph is a fruit of your unwavering support for sports and women. You have always believed that sports can unite us, heal us, and uplift our spirits as one of the major drivers of the economy. And today, we have seen it happen," he stated.

He commended the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her "constant support for our women in sports."

"This win goes beyond sports. It is a powerful symbol of our national unity and cohesion. In those 90 minutes, Nigerians everywhere from the north, south, east and west held their breath, prayed together, cheered the team, and finally celebrated together.

''That is the power of sports, and indeed the power of our women in sports," he said.

President Tinubu stuns Super Falcons with generous gifts, the first time the 10-time winners of the WAFCON were so rewarded by a grateful nation. President Tinubu announced $100,000 each to each Super Falcon, $50k to each technical crew member, a three-bedroom flat in the Renewed Hope Estate, national honours of OON to the team and crew. Aisha Falode says the Super Falcons have never had it so good, until today, when President Tinubu accorded them an unprecedented grand reception.

In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu, now the President, berated the other Presidential Candidate (Peter Obi), he was ashamed to call his name, saying "Na statistics we go chop all I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians”.

Now 2 years into his 4-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world with millions of Nigerians not knowing where their next meal will come from.

President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong Statistics from wrong unemployment figures, wrong inflation figures, and now GDP rebasing, all to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions.

Governance is not a rocket science, it's not a gamble, like I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity and compassion.

A new Nigeria is POssible.

ICYMI: About Nigeria's $22.5 billion loan
The controversy over the $22.5 billion external loan recently approved by the National Assembly for the Federal Government is unwarranted. It's remarkable that, despite the Federal Ministry of Finance providing a detailed explanation of the loan's purpose and terms two months ago, some critics are still raising unnecessary questions and concerns.
I have some advice for the critics: Effective opposition requires engagement based on verifiable facts and precise analysis, rather than relying on lies, misleading narratives or unsubstantiated claims.

This is the only way criticism can be used to forge a healthy democracy.
To facilitate informed discussion, I reproduce below the Federal Ministry of Finance's comprehensive statement on the loans:

PRESS STATEMENT
RE: NIGERIA’S EXTERNAL BORROWING PLAN FOR 2024 -2026

On May 27, 2025, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, formally requested the approval of the 2024 – 2026 External Borrowing Rolling Plan from the National Assembly. This press release provides context and clarification on the purpose and significance of the request.

The proposed Borrowing Rolling Plan is an essential component of the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) in accordance with both the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 and the DMO Act 2003. The Plan outlines the external borrowing framework for both the federal and sub-national governments over a three-year period, accompanied by five detailed appendices on the projects, terms and conditions, implementation period, etc.

By adopting a structured, forward-looking approach, the plan facilitates comprehensive financial planning and avoids the inefficiencies of ad hoc or reactive borrowing practices. This strategic method enhances Nigeria’s ability to implement effective fiscal policies and mobilize development resources.

The borrowing plan does not equate to actual borrowing for the period. The actual borrowing for each year is contained in the annual budget. In 2025, the external borrowing component is US $1.23 billion, and it has not yet been drawn. This is planned for H2 2025. Also, the plan is for both federal and several state governments across numerous geopolitical zones, including Abia, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Lagos, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto, and Yobe States.

Importantly, it should be noted that the Borrowing Rolling Plan does not equate to an automatic increase in the nation’s debt burden. The nature of the rolling plan means that borrowings are split over the period of the projects. For example, a large proportion of projects in the 2024. – 2026 rolling plan have multi-year draw downs of between 5 – 7 years, which are project-tied loans. These projects cut across critical sectors of the economy, including power grids and transmission lines, irrigation for improving food security, fibre optics network across the country, fighter jets for security, and rail and road infrastructure.

The majority of the proposed borrowing will be sourced from Nigeria’s development partners, including the World Bank, African Development Bank, French Development Agency, European Investment Bank, JICA, China EximBank, and the Islamic Development Bank. These institutions offer concessional financing with favourable terms and long repayment periods, thereby supporting Nigeria’s development objectives sustainably.

The government seeks to reiterate that the debt service to revenue ratio has started decreasing from its peak of over 90% in 2023. The government has ended the distortionary and inflationary ways and means. There are significant revenue expectations from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and technology-enabled monitoring and collection of surpluses from Government Owned Enterprises and revenue-generating ministries, departments, and agencies, including legacy outstanding dues. Having achieved a fair degree of macroeconomic stabilization, the overarching goal of the Federal Government is to pivot the economy onto a path of rapid, sustained, and inclusive economic growth. Achieving this vision requires substantial investment in critical sectors such as transportation, energy, infrastructure, and agriculture. These investments will lay the groundwork for long-term economic diversification and encourage private sector participation.

Our debt strategy is therefore guided not solely by the size of our obligations but by the utility, sustainability, and economic returns of the borrowing. Ensuring that all borrowed funds are efficiently utilized and directed toward growth-enhancing projects remains a top priority. In conclusion, the government remains committed to keeping borrowing within manageable and sustainable limits in accordance with the DMO Debt Sustainability Framework.

The ongoing tax reform agenda and other revenue initiatives will further improve revenue generation and prudent financial management. We reaffirm our dedication to fiscal discipline, transparency, and accountability. Constructive public engagement and legislative oversight are vital components of our journey toward long-term economic stability and inclusive national prosperity.
