Youth O’Clock Champions Tree Planting Initiative in Nafada

Youth O’Clock Nigeria, Gombe State Chapter, recently organized a tree planting campaign in Nafada, bringing together community stakeholders to promote environmental sustainability. The event, held at the Gombe State College of Education and Legal Studies, Nafada, featured the planting of 1,500 economic tree seedlings across key locations, including the College, the Eid Ground, and Jimawan Nafada.

Malam Muyiddeen Baba, Head of the Agriculture Department at the host institution, described tree planting as a transformative tool for community development. He commended Youth O’Clock for supplying the tree seedlings and encouraged residents to adopt the culture of tree planting for long-term environmental and economic benefits.

The Emir of Nafada, HRH Alhaji Muhammad Dadum Hamza, represented by the District Head of Garu, commended Youth O’Clock for its proactive development efforts. He expressed appreciation for initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and community development.

Farmers, Herders Sign Landmark Peace Accord in Nafada Ahead of 2025 Wet Season

In a historic move aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence and enhancing food security, farmers and herders in Nafada Local Government Area of Gombe State have signed a peace accord ahead of the 2025 wet season.

The agreement was sealed during a stakeholders’ engagement organized by Youth O’Clock Nigeria, Gombe State Chapter, and brought together traditional leaders, religious groups, security agencies, civil society organizations, and local government representatives.

Under the accord, both parties pledged to maintain peace throughout the farming season. Farmers committed to preserving designated cattle routes and refraining from post-harvest bush burning, while herders vowed to respect farmlands and engage in non-violent conflict resolution.

Speaking at the event, Sarkin Fulanin Nafada, Alhaji Abdu Sarkin Fulani, lauded the initiative and promised the continued cooperation of herders. Similarly, the Chairman of Nafada Farmers Union, Alhaji Saidu Sarkin Yamma, pledged to spread the peace message among farmers across the area.

The Gombe State Police Commissioner, represented by the Divisional Police Officer in Nafada, CSP Yohanna Joel Atuman, urged all parties to uphold peace, stressing that development can only thrive in a stable environment.

Representing the Emir of Nafada, HRH Alhaji Dadun Hamza, Alhaji Sulaiman Bappah Hamza called on all stakeholders to replicate the peace dialogue at community levels, engaging district and village heads in grassroots sensitization.

In his remarks, the State Coordinator of Youth O’Clock, Comrade Abdulazeez Sani Labaran, emphasized the organization's commitment to youth empowerment and peacebuilding. He stressed that no meaningful development can occur without peace and urged communities to take ownership of their safety and discourage youth from being used to incite conflict.

The peace accord was jointly signed by representatives from the Nafada Emirate Council, Jama’atul Nasrul Islam (JNI), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Civil Society Organizations, Gombe State Police Command, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nafada Local Government Council, and the Gombe State College of Education and Legal Studies, Nafada.

The agreement is expected to significantly reduce tensions between farmers and herders in the region, strengthen inter-communal trust, and set a model for peaceful coexistence in other parts of Gombe State and beyond.

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has commended the political class in Gombe State for demonstrating remarkable political maturity, unity, and tolerance during the wedding ceremony of the daughter of Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, former Governor of Gombe State.

The Gombe State University Alumni Association's National Executive Council (NEC) has approved an election calendar for the 2025 congress election, marking a crucial milestone in the association's history. This move aims to ensure a smooth transition of leadership and encourage participation from members across various branches and chapters.

Key Dates for Congress Elections: July 12th Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, July 15th-16th Faculties of Education and Science, July 17th Federal College of Education Technical Gombe and Federal University Kashere, July 18th Federal Polytechnic Kaltungo.

On the other hand July 21st Gombe State Polytechnic Bajoga and Gombe State College of Education Billiri, July 22nd Gombe State College of Education and Legal Studies Nafada, Gombe, Borno and Yobe Branches. Also July 23rd is set aside for Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna branches respectively.

Peace Returns to Kwami as Mediation Resolves Farmers-Herders Conflict, Markets Reopen

A longstanding conflict between farmers and herders in Malleri, Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State, has been peacefully resolved through a joint mediation effort by Kwami LGA, Gombe Network of Civil Society (GONET), and Youth O’clock Nigeria.

The crisis, which had led to the closure of Kurugu and Bojude markets, disrupted economic activities in the area. Following dialogue sessions involving farmers, herders, community leaders, and security agencies, the embargo on the markets has now been lifted.

Representing the Chairman of Kwami LGA, Hon. Ahmad Wali Doho, the Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Dahiru Ajiya, reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting lives and property. He announced the allocation of grazing land to the herders and called for continued peace in the community.

Chairman of Gombe Network of Civil Society Amb. Ibrahim Yusuf, emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and stakeholder collaboration in conflict resolution, He also urged the participant to act peace, preach peace and leave peacefully with one another.

The Gombe State University Alumni Association (GSUAA) National Secretariat held its inaugural meeting of the 4th National Executive Committee (NEC) on June 10, 2025, at the NITDA Park, approving its 3rd quarter calendar, appointing three ex‑officio members, eight ad‑hoc committees, and four aides to the President.

The NEC Chairman and National President of the Association, Comrade Buhari Magaji, PhD (Masanin Funakaye), congratulated the newly elected NEC members and urged them to bring their experience and expertise to bear in advancing the ideals of the Association.

The NEC confirmed Muhammed Haruna Adamu (Moha), Ishiaka Muhammed (Masi), and Jemimah U. K. Musa as ex‑officio members, commending their dedication and commitment to the Association.

Eight ad‑hoc committees were created to further drive the Association’s agenda. The Advisory Committee is headed by Malam Usman Isah Ya’u with Hussaina Tijjani as Secretary, while the Permanent Secretariat Project Committee is led by Dr. Habiba Isah, with Attahiru Abubakar as Secretary.

The Branches and Chapters Management Committee is chaired by Dr. Usman Adamu Abubakar, with Pononyamba Ishiaku Garba as Secretary. The Media and Publicity Committee is headed by Abdulazeez Sani Labaran, with Abubakar Aminullah Amin serving as Secretary. Other committees include the ICT Committee, the GSU Alumni News Bulletin Committee, the National Secretariat Asset Management and Maintenance Committee, and the GSU Alumni Constitution Review and Amendment Committee.

In addition, the NEC approved the appointment of four aides to the National President, including Dr. Luka Peter (SA Research and Documentation), Dr. Muhammad Kabir Ahmed (SA ICT), Muhammad Bello Bala (SA Media and Publicity), and Dr. Usman A. Abubakar (SA Branches and Chapters Management). All appointments take immediate effect.

Youth O'Clock Nigeria has expressed readiness to partner with the Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities to promote inclusive youth development and disability rights.

During a recent advocacy and congratulatory visit, the Gombe State Coordinator of Youth O’Clock Nigeria, Comrade Abdulazeez Sani Labaran, led a delegation to the Commission’s office to commend the establishment of the body and the appointment of its leadership. He described the creation of the Commission as a significant step towards advancing the rights of persons with disabilities in the state.

Comrade Labaran emphasized the organization’s commitment to working on issues such as job creation, education, peace and security, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), with a particular focus on ensuring that youth with disabilities are not left behind. He pledged the group’s support for advocacy, capacity building, and program implementation in collaboration with the Commission.

In response, the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Ishiyaku Adamu, appreciated the visit and described it as timely. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to partnering with Youth O’Clock Nigeria and other youth-focused organizations to empower and include persons with disabilities in development initiatives. He also recognized Comrade Labaran’s role in advocating for the establishment of the Commission and referred to him as a strong ally of the disability community.

L-PRES and GOSEPA Pledge Support for Youth O'clock Nigeria's Peacebuilding and Environmental Initiatives in Gombe State

The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project and the Gombe State Environmental Sanitation and Protection Agency (GOSEPA) have pledged their support for Youth O'clock Nigeria's peacebuilding and environmental sustainability initiatives. This partnership aims to promote peace, prevent conflicts within the livestock sector, and drive inclusive growth across Gombe State and beyond.

L-PRES is a six-year project funded by the World Bank, with a development objective to improve livestock productivity, resilience, and commercialization of selected value chains. The project focuses on beef cattle, sheep and goat, poultry, pigs, and micro livestock like beekeeping and honey production. By strategically supporting these value chains, L-PRES endeavors to create a ripple effect, fostering economic resilience and livelihood improvement in communities.

The project's State Coordinator, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, highlighted L-PRES's achievements, including re-mapping and re-demarcating eight gazetted grazing reserves and 37 cattle routes. Additionally, over 100 solar-powered boreholes have been constructed, and key earth dams have been designed to ease water access along grazing corridors, reducing migratory clashes and retaining pastoralists within the state.

Youth O'clock Nigeria's Gombe State Coordinator, Comrade Abdulazeez Sani Labaran, presented the group's peacebuilding and climate action vision. Their flagship initiative includes planting 4,500 trees across the three senatorial zones, starting from May, and organizing town hall meetings to rally support for conflict resolution and amplify the government's peacebuilding efforts.

The partnership also seeks to review existing environmental laws, expand Gombe State Monthly Sanitation to the remaining 10LGAs and increase funding for GOSEPA to strengthen its mandate of promoting environmental hygiene and ensuring public compliance with regulations. GOSEPA's Executive Secretary, Dr. Auwal Baba Jada, commended Youth O'clock Nigeria's efforts and pledged the agency's support for initiatives in promoting a cleaner, safer, and healthier Gombe.

The Gombe State Office of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) has partnered with Youth O’Clock to promote environmental development, economic gains, and social accountability across Gombe State as outlined in Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya's agenda for a greener Gombe.

The partnership was formalized during a meeting held at the ACReSAL state office in Gombe, where both parties agreed to collaborate on various environmental initiatives targeting nine communities such as Dukku, Hashidu, Malala, Billiri, Kaltungo, Cham, Gwani, Wade, and Nono.

Speaking during the meeting, ACReSAL State Project Coordinator, Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, said the collaboration would focus on tree planting, medical outreaches, and town hall meetings.

He noted that the project aims to enhance grassroots engagement and support climate action efforts in the state.

The State Coordinator of Youth O’Clock, Comrade Abdulazeez Sani Labaran, revealed that at least 4,500 trees would be planted across the nine communities, with each community receiving a minimum of 500 trees.

He added that Youth O’Clock also plans to establish orchards in all public higher institutions across Gombe State to foster both environmental and economic benefits.

Deputy State Coordinator of Youth O’Clock, Maryam Adamu, disclosed that a mega event is planned across the three senatorial zones of the state, incorporating tree planting activities, medical outreach programs, and town hall meetings. The event will also address critical social issues, including drug abuse prevention and mitigation, herders-farmers conflict resolution, and public health education.

Dr. Jauro assured that ACReSAL would provide technical training to the Youth O’Clock team to ensure effective service delivery on environmental projects. He commended the organization for its initiative and reaffirmed ACReSAL’s commitment to advancing environmental resilience efforts in the state.

Highlighting ACReSAL’s achievements, Dr. Jauro stated that the Gombe State project unit was ranked as the best performing among the 19 participating northern states and the Federal Capital Territory during the 2024 performance assessment. He attributed the success to the support from the state government, the citizens, and partners like Youth O’Clock.

Other ACReSAL officials present at the meeting included Aminu Maigari from the Climate Change Office, Dr. Ibrahim Jalo, Environment and Safeguard Officer, Mohammed Musa Aliyu, Natural Resource Officer, Mohammed Hassan, Project Accountant, and Abdullahi Hussaini, Management Information Systems Officer.

Gombe Police Command Strengthens Security Partnership with Youth O’clock Nigeria

The Gombe State Command of the Nigerian Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Youth O’clock Advancement Movement Association Nigeria to enhance security across the state.

This was disclosed by the newly posted Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahya, during an advocacy visit by the association to the state command headquarters.

According to CP Bello Yahya, security is a collective responsibility, and it is crucial for stakeholders and citizens to actively support security agencies, particularly by providing timely intelligence on suspicious activities to facilitate swift action.

Commending the Youth O’clock Nigeria for its vision of empowering young people and combating social vices, CP Bello Yahya emphasized that such initiatives are instrumental in shaping responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to national development.

A bilateral discussion between the two entities highlighted key areas of collaboration, including education, health, agriculture, sports, climate change, and entrepreneurship.

Led by Secretary to the State Government Baba Malam Wali, the Yobe State delegation expressed its readiness to work with UCLG Africa to enhance service delivery in its 17 local government areas.

The partnership aims to build the capacity of local government administrators, establishing them as resource persons and institutions in West Africa.

Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Hon. Ibrahim Adamu Jajere requested information on the registration process and potential partnership opportunities.

Commissioner of Higher Education Professor Bello Kawuwa emphasized the importance of collaboration in building capacity and implementing a "train the trainee" program with UCLG Africa.

This partnership marks a significant step towards achieving comprehensive autonomy and reshaping local government administration in Yobe State for better service delivery.

Other delegation members who contributed to the bilateral discussion include Hon. Bello Ali Mustapha, Commissioner of Agriculture; Hon. Bukar Adamu, Chairman of Damaturu Local Government Area; and Mamman Muhammed, Director General Press and Media Affairs.

In his assurance speech, the Secretary General of the United Cities and Local Government of Africa, Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, expressed his happiness to receive the delegation in his office and reaffirmed his organization's steadfastness in assisting the state to achieve its mandate of basic service delivery at the local community level.
