SECURITY ALERT: ATTEMPTED LURE BY POLICE TRACKER TO ARREST ME
I wish to alert the public and relevant authorities to a disturbing security threat I have faced since Saturday evening, July 19, 2025.
At exactly 9:57 p.m., I received a call on my private phone line,a number that is strictly reserved for personal use and never shared for media or business-related purposes.
The call came from 0814 297 0985, a number that Truecaller identifies as belonging to CPL Asaph SPU, allegedly a police officer attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU).
The caller introduced himself and claimed he came across my profile on Facebook. He said he wanted to offer me a media-related job and insisted we must meet in person today (Monday, July 21) before he could disclose further details. His approach was evasive, suspicious, and lacked transparency.
Alarmed by the unexpected nature of the call and the fact that it reached my private line, I consulted a security Expert.
After reviewing the situation, he advised me to be more vigilant as this was likely a covert tracking operation aimed at luring me into an arrest.
According to the expert, my private number may have been obtained through expanded tracking techniques, given my official media line is often unreachable for calls.
This unsettling development comes just weeks after Asiwaju Media published an unbiased investigative report on a sitting member of the House of Representatives representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency. That report was based strictly on verified facts and professional standards. I now have reasons to believe that this call may be linked to that publication.
Let it be made very clear:
If I have committed any offence or am under any lawful investigation, the proper and legal procedure is to invite me through a formal police channel. I will honour any legitimate invitation in accordance with the law.
To the officer involved and his paymasters—be advised that your plan has been uncovered. Cease and desist from using illegal and clandestine methods to intimidate, harass, or entrap me. Nigeria is a democracy. The right to practice independent journalism is protected by the Constitution, and I will not be silenced.
Let it be known publicly that I consider this not only a personal threat but also a direct attack on press freedom. Attempts to intimidate or silence journalists through covert tactics must never be tolerated in a democratic society.
I remain undeterred. If anything untoward happens to me, this statement stands as a public record of the suspicious encounter and the potential threat to my safety.
We will continue to report the truth. We will not back down.
