ALLEGED ₦110.4BN FRAUD: YAHAYA BELLO LOSES BID FOR UK MEDICAL TRIP

Abuja | July 17, 2025

Justice Maryanne Anineh of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama, on Thursday dismissed an application by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Adoza Bello, seeking the release of his passport to enable him travel to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.

Bello, who is standing trial alongside Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, is facing a 16-count charge of alleged criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving ₦110.4 billion, brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

At a previous sitting, Bello’s counsel, J.B. Daudu (SAN), had filed an application dated June 19 and submitted on June 20, requesting temporary release of his passport to honour a medical appointment abroad. He assured the court the passport would be returned upon his return.

However, the EFCC, through its counsel Chukwudi Enebeli (SAN), opposed the motion, arguing it would amount to altering the defendant’s bail conditions. Enebeli stressed that the sureties who guaranteed Bello's bail were not notified of the proposed trip and questioned whether they would continue to stand as sureties under the new circumstance.

The prosecution also accused Bello of forum shopping, noting he had filed a similar application in another court where the passport is currently held.

“The passport cannot be with two different courts at the same time. Asking both courts to release the same document poses a risk of conflicting orders,” Enebeli submitted.

In her ruling, Justice Anineh emphasized the issue of jurisdiction, clarifying that her court could not grant the request because the passport was not in its custody.

“Records and inquiry revealed that the defendant’s passport is with the Federal High Court, not this court. Even the defendant admitted this in a sworn affidavit. Making an order here would be an exercise in futility,” she ruled.

The court subsequently struck out the application and adjourned the case to October 8, 9 and November 13, 2025, for continuation of trial.

STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU ON THE PASSING OF FORMER PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, GCFR

It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR, my predecessor, who departed this life today, Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom.

President Buhari was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures. He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life.

He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential. He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.

In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I have been in constant touch, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him.

I also extend my condolences to the government and people of Katsina State, most especially the people and traditional leaders of Daura Emirate.

We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.

As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today.

I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour.

The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country.

May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.

And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR
President, Federal Republic of Nigeria
