Efik: The First Nigerian Language Reduced to Writing
The Historic Role of Efik in Nigerian Literacy
1. Why Writing Matters
Before colonialism, most Nigerian languages were oral. History, law, religion, and science were passed down through proverbs, songs, folktales, and Nsibidi ideograms. Nsibidi was used across the Cross River region for sacred and administrative communication. But it wasn’t a full alphabetic script for everyday literacy.
The shift from orality to alphabetic writing changed everything. It allowed mass education, standardized record-keeping, Bible translation, newspapers, and literature. For the Lower Cross languages, that shift started with Efik in 1812.
2. 1812: Chief Eyo Nsa and the First Orthography
Efik holds a unique place in Nigerian linguistic history. In 1812, Chief Eyo Nsa, also recorded as Eyo W***y Honesty, devised a way to write Efik using the Latin alphabet.
This predates most other Nigerian language orthographies. Chief Eyo Nsa was a prominent Efik trader and statesman in Old Calabar. He was literate in English through contact with European traders and understood the power of writing for commerce, diplomacy, and administration. His orthography was functional, used for letters, trade records, and communication with Europeans.
This makes Efik the first Nigerian language reduced to systematic alphabetic writing by a Nigerian.
3. The Missionary Expansion: 1846 Onward
The real explosion of Efik literacy came with the Scottish Presbyterian missionaries. In 1846, Rev. Hope Masterton Waddell established a mission in Calabar. The missionaries adopted and refined Efik orthography for evangelism and education.
Key milestones for Efik:
Bible Translation: Efik was the first Nigerian language to get a full Bible translation, Yoruba followed. The Efik New Testament appeared in 1862, and the complete Bible in 1868.
Print Culture: Missionaries produced Efik readers, hymn books, catechisms, and an Efik dictionary. The first printing press in Old Calabar ran Efik materials. Rev. Hugh Goldie devised the first orthography and compiled the first Efik-English dictionary.
Vocabulary Work: H. M. Waddell published “A vocabulary of the Efik or old Calabar language” in 1849.
Standardization: By 2012, the Modern Efik Orthography was formalized by the Efik Language Development sub-committee of the Obong of Calabar Executive Forum.
4. Why Efik Led the Way
Three factors gave Efik the lead:
Trade Contact: Calabar was a major Atlantic port. Efik elites were early English literates and diplomats due to centuries of trade contact.
Missionary Base: The Scottish mission chose Calabar as headquarters. They needed one language for schools and church. Efik was it. Encyclopædia Britannica notes: “It has been reduced to writing by the missionaries, who have employed the ordinary English alphabet. Considerable progress has been made in the formation of an initiatory literature; no fewer than 65 volumes having proceeded from the mission press”.
Political Organization: Efik ran the centralized city-state of Old Calabar with an established council system.
Result: “Efik proper has national status in Nigeria and was made the literary standard”. It’s the official language of Cross River State today.
5. Efik vs Nsibidi: Two Writing Traditions
Efik people used two systems:
1. Nsibidi: Pre-colonial ideograms for secret societies, court messages, and sacred knowledge.
2. Latin-based Efik: From 1812 onward, for education, trade, Christianity, and governance.
Nsibidi never became a mass literacy tool. Efik Latin script did. By the late 1800s, Efik was taught in primary and secondary schools, universities, and adult education.
6. Legacy Today
National Status: Efik is one of the few Nigerian languages with national status.
Media and Education: Used in everyday life, business, media, and schools in Cross River State.
Speaker Base: Around 3 million native speakers plus 2 million second-language speakers.
Tone Marking: Modern Efik marks 5 tones. High tone ó, low tone à, mid tone ē, falling tone û, rising tone ě.
Scholarly Study: Linguists continue work on Efik phonology, grammar, and adaptation of English loanwords.
7. Takeaway
Chief Eyo Nsa’s 1812 orthography wasn’t just a local event. It marked the beginning of alphabetic literacy in Nigeria by Nigerians. Efik’s early adoption in trade and missions explains its role as the literary standard. Trade, missionary policy, and geography shaped it.
