Culture is transcending. Some people are expanding and interweaving their culture with modern day trend and people unknowingly practice and revere their cultural artifacts without knowing.

Do you know that the Labubu toy driving our teens cràzy is actually a representation of Nordic mythology. Nordic also called Scandinavia refers to the cultural region of Northern Europe.

This is like remaking our revered Ikenga or Okpensi into a marketable toys and sell to Europeans. That’s exactly what they did.

Direct Colonization has ended but, the Europeans are smart enough to make all their inventions revolve around their culture, from calendar named after their deities, to logos and symbols that are generally used all over the world, example is the hospital symbol of a snake coiled around a staff, often called the Rod of Asclepius.

Our Igbo culture is supposed to have gone past the era of arguing about wether going to the river to make a r!tual is safe or not. We need to think on how to modernize and export it while still maintaining its original significance.

Europeans do theirs through inventions, trade, entertainment, etc. It’s time we also modernize or face serious extinction.

Every year Nafdac raids Ariaria Aba & Main Market Onitsha over fake beverages. During each raid, innocent traders are affected, some are wrecked financially while some are sent back to the village.

To feed our ego, we always end up with the blame game of how government makes strong policies that affects only ndi Igbo. We haven’t asked, are those selling these fake items ndi Hausa?.

Few days ago i came across these empty bottle buyers transacting with hotel workers. These people in turn sell these empty bottles to fake beverage manufacturers.

Who’s to be blamed for the high rate of kidney diseases courtesy of mostly fake drinks consumption?. The worker trying to make side money from selling bottles, the buyer who’s main job is buying and reselling or the users who make fake beverages.

When you consume these drinks, ensure you destroy the bottles. If not, you may come back again to consume a fake one because you left an empty bottle behind.

Today being the international day to honor fathers is an opportunity for you to tap from their blessings, whether yours is alive or departed.

If you live far from your father, send him money, no matter how little & have him make positive decrees for you.

If you live close to him, visit him unexpectedly with 4 bulbs of Kolanut, a spirit drink & money (you can add other gifts as you wish). And have him make positive decrees for you.

If your father’s late, get a kolanut & call upon his spirit to represent you in the land of the spirit & pave way for you, pour libation for and honor him.

If you can afford to slaughter an animal & make feast with your Umunna, friends & family, in honor of your father, do so.

When looking at gifts, consider clothings, they hardly change their outfit. When i attend village gatherings, i see how some fathers blush when their outfits are complimented. They usually respond with “my son got it for me”.

If your grandfather still lives, extend same gestures to them too.

We consistently exalt Mothers that we often take father’s blessings for granted.

Your father is the ancestor you know. Ndi Igbo si na Onye maalu nna ya, maalu ndi Ichie!

This the only survivor of the Indian plane crash.

Not a Christian or a Muslim but a Hinduist because he’s of the Indian Origin and it’s the traditional religion in India. Just as we have Odinani Igbo.

Not like the weren’t other Christians who prayed and begged God for help, but still per!shed.

Why? God doesn’t listen or not merciful to his followers like how Nigerian Christians portray him? Why saving a non believer?.

The answer is this; this survivor backed his faith with actions. He was reported to have jumped from his seat or probably did something different from what the rest of the passengers did (which may be obviously praying for miracle).

When you’re faced with reality, that’s when you will understand that without action, your faith and religious affiliation is a mere emotional construct.

When I criticize Christians seeking for miracles while folding their arms or Ndi Odinani doing so many rituals while constantly sitting down at a place, it seems like i am sitting on the fence.

Your religion and faith strengthens your actions and builds faith in what you do. Those wins you get after praying, wishing or performing some r!tuals doesn’t miraculously happen. You must have made a little effort that yielded big results. It’s silly when you attribute everything to God, faith or your r!tuals.

For you to eat yam, you must plant seedlings and then ask whatever you believe in for a bountiful harvest, that’s where your faith comes in.

Last week while waiting for my turn to barb at a salon, a man walked in hawking framed pictures for wall deco. He had about 7 frames with him.

After showing everyone his artworks, nobody obliged to buy, he left and came in again minutes later, went round again, but no one patronized except one guy that called him back just as he was about to leave the second time, took a closer look at the frames and paid for one.

Just as if they blew a whistle, almost everyone in the saloon started taking another closer look at the pictures. And ended up buying the rest of the frames. I mean all!.

Nobody else was as suprised as i was, because i was obviously observing the scenario.

When the man left, i asked one of the barbers: “Is this the man’s first time of coming here?”, he said no. He further explained that the man shows up almost ever evening but hasn’t sold any there due to the price haggling.

I was stunned. I picked up my phone and wrote on my diary: “Show up everyday, you may never know your pay day”. That scenario has been ringing in my head since then.

This is me to my fellow Entrepreneurs, show up everyday, respond to that potential customers that inquires for price without buying, post everyday no matter how low it converts. Your payday comes unexpected.

Daalu!

Every year Ijebu people to come together and honor their heritage & ancestors, regardless of their religious beliefs, in a ceremony called Ojude Oba, meaning “the king's court”.

What started as a simple reverence to their Monarch has transformed into a national festival. Attracting guests from all over the world. The beautiful scenes trends all over Nigeria to the extent that we forget it’s specifically a Yoruba culture.

Ogun people are religious as they have a mixture of Christians and Muslims. Yet they invested in this culture untill it became an exportable commodity.

If it were to be Ndi Igbo, it would’ve been influenced by religion. Christians would’ve fought to see it’s extinction, or worse turn it to a Christian ceremony with clergymen performing important roles. Take our new yam festivals and Ofala for example.

Some of us have ceremonies bigger and more significant than Ojude Oba in our respective communities. But our priority to foreign events saw to its termination. The custodians of the culture who are supposed to promote and appear in their regalia to make it appealing have all been knighted in the church. The few that are still promoting it are sometimes messing it up and giving the government reasons to ostracize it.

Onicha has Ofala
Oka as Imo-Oka
Enugwu-Ukwu has Ipia-Agba/Igu Aro
Nnewi/Nnobi has Afia-Olu
Achalla has Ada-Achalla
Igbariam has Igbaebe
Arondizuogu has Ikeji
Ndi Imo has Okorosha ETC

Go home and support your culture. Remove the bad eggs, make it look exportable and investors will start coming in. Culture is now a major source of wealth.

Dr. Richard is one of the few Igbo philanthropists whose benevolence is highly evident.

And to think he’s from my Enugwu-Ukwu community gives me so much satisfaction.

Tomorrow, one efulefu will sit at one corner and say that ndi Igbo doesn’t love/help themselves.

My top 10 most prestigious traditional societies in Anambra state (part 1):

In a period when some individuals have męssed up the Igbo traditional stools and tittles and have transformed it into Ozo uka due to their loyalty and priority to their foreign doctrines and practices, some communities have been very steadfast in the purification of their traditional stools. Judging from the process of their initiation to the overall behavioral attitude of their members.

Below are my most prestigious traditional societies in Anambra state:

1. Ozo Onicha (Onitsha): Onicha remains one of the communities in Anambra state that still clasp to their ancient process of ichi Ozo despite their exposures. If you want to be onye Ozo Onicha, you must go through the rituals despite your status in the society. You can’t wake up and pay your way into becoming an Agbalanze Onicha without going through the rituals of ‘idonye ike na ani & ina obibi’ etc.
Ozo Onicha is alleged the costliest Ozo tittle in Anambra.

2. Ozo Oka (Awka): Similar to Ozo Onicha, ndi Oka has built fences round their traditional society, eliminating external religious interference while still maintaining their ancient standard. From the cost to the process, only few are able to afford it and this keeps off sullied individuals from bastardizing it. Also alleged as the second costliest to take.

3. Ozo Nnewi: When you want to see the uniqueness, cultural embodiment, observance of rules and regulations as onye Ozo, & purification, then look at onye Ozo Nnewi. They make less noise, less showing off and their charisma is second to none. Having the oldest Monarch in Igbo land who has witnessed various stages of Traditional transformation and practices is another advantage to their traditional purification. As onye Nnewi, If you can’t observe the terms and conditions as onye Ozo, don’t think of taking a tittle in Nnewi.

4. Ozomkpu Enugwu-Ukwu: When you talk about pomp and pageantry, affluence, formal rituals and elaborate ceremonies, then you think of Ndi Ozomkpu Enugwu-Ukwu. The calibre of their initiates speaks highly of the standard of their association. Though, a bit sullied by external individual religious beliefs, Ozomkpu Enugwu-Ukwu has been one of the few traditional associations that has witnessed tremendous successful growth and stylish transformation while still rooted in the traditional customs of Enugwu-Ukwu & Nri.

5. Oba Agu-Ukwu Nri: Similar to Ozomkpu Enugwu-Ukwu, Oba Agu-Ukwu Nri has the beauty, the elegance, and the finest initiates. What stands them out from the rest of Ozo Associations is their initiation rites and processes which are still in accordance to their ancient practices, handed over from their ancestors. While some others focuses more on elegance and styles, Oba Nri focuses more on purification and adherence to customs and traditions.

Please note that this article is entirely my opinion borne out of experience and witnessed events.
Subsequently i shall also drop the remaining part.e

I woke up this morning with this proverb in my mind “Dibia na-agba afa, Ofeke ana-agba uche”. I paused and started thinking about it in a different angle, and what prompted ndi Igbo to coin this adage.

An Ofeke isn’t a “usèless” person as it has been stereotyped. An ofeke is someone who isn’t a dibia. That’s to say, the opposite of a dibia is ofeke. And it’s a non dibia (ofeke) that can go to a dibia for divination.

Since a dibia is supposed to commune with mmuo to give you all the answers you seek, why then is it necessary for you to think (gbaa uche)?.

Afa doesn’t lie, but a dibia may tamper with its explanation depending on his level of intelligence and information. An ofeke is expected to dissect to understand.

Ndi Igbo understands that the first energy that makes or destroys a man is conceived through the mind and then translated into action. A divination cannot be complete without proper assimilation and understanding.

A dibia can see and say, it’s left for the recipient to understand and do. That’s why they’re some people who run from one dibia to another without understanding that the solution to their problem is under their foot. And theyre also some people who doesn’t visit dibia but still practice odinani in its totality and still live happily. The difference is access to and understanding of information.

This proverb also applies in other areas of life. Such as encouraging us to also apply extra energy to our already existing spiritual energies.
It’s advised that when you do agwu, you don’t go home and sleep, you open your mind for inspiration, you understand and translate it into actions. Agwu is fueled by thinking and executing.

When you wake up in the morning and pour libations and break kola, you don’t go back to bed, you work to manifest your decrees.

Just like how Igba afa & Igba uche goes together, spirituality and hand/hard work also goes together.

When you visit my store, before we talk about business, i must offer you kolanut or Nzu. Whether you’re a Christian or onye Odinani.

This is my subtle way of reawakening the Igbo traditional consciousness in you.

Today, Ozomkpu Amb Elijah Onyeagba (Ike Enugwu-Ukwu na Umunri) stopped over to patronize my brand and in the end, left his signature.

Ka ogolu, ka olelu, onu onye echichi bu onu ndi Ichie.
