Deception wears a friendly smile, speaks in gentle tones, and promises the world—while hiding a dagger behind its back. It thrives on trust, weaving lies so soft they feel like truth. By the time the mask falls, the damage is done, and the heart learns a bitter lesson.

THE TOOTHPASTE CAP

CHAPTER 4: THE FIRST SQUEEZE

It was a rainy Tuesday morning. The kind that begged you to stay curled under a blanket with hot cocoa and lazy kisses.

But instead, Ijeoma stood in the bathroom, motionless, staring at the toothpaste.

It looked worse than usual—flattened, twisted, almost like someone had grabbed it in a rush, squeezed it mid-tube, and flung it back without a thought. The cap was missing entirely.

She blinked. Once. Twice.

Her hands clenched.

Obi strolled in, towel around his waist, whistling as he reached for his shaving cream.

“Babe,” she said slowly, voice oddly calm, “where’s the cap?”

He didn’t look up. “What cap?”

“The toothpaste cap.”

“Oh…” He rubbed his chin. “I think it fell behind the sink yesterday. I was late for that Zoom meeting. Forgot to pick it.”

She turned to face him fully. “You forgot yesterday. You forgot the day before. You always forget.”

Obi paused, confused by the edge in her tone. “It’s just toothpaste, Ijeoma.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Exactly. It’s just toothpaste. So why is it so hard for you to close it or squeeze it right?”

He gave a short laugh. “Because I’m not a toothpaste technician, that’s why.”

She didn’t laugh. She walked past him, brushing her teeth in silence. He watched her leave the room without another word, her silence louder than any argument they’d had.

Obi blinked, unsure what had just happened. But something had changed in that moment.

Something small. Something sharp.

Like the edge of a capless tube.
