WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING OR BUYING OVER AN OILPALM FARM
THEY’LL TELL YOU HOW PROFITABLE OIL PALM FARMING IS, BUT THEY WON’T TELL YOU THE COST IMPLICATIONS INVOLVED.
They’ll tell you oil palm farming is a goldmine. They’ll say it’s a generational investment. They’ll push you to buy seedlings.
THE HARSH TRUTH THEY HIDE FROM YOU
1️⃣ FERTILIZERS WILL DRAIN YOUR WALLET
Nobody tells you that oil palms won’t thrive without regular fertilization. Weak trees, low yield, wasted investment. And trust me, fertilizers are expensive….you’ll be buying them for decades.
2️⃣ LAND CLEARING IS A NEVER-ENDING EXPENSE
You’ll clear the land once, but weeds and grass will keep coming back every single year. If you ignore it, they’ll choke your palms. Regular clearing isn’t free it’s a yearly cost.
3️⃣ FIRE CAN WIPE OUT EVERYTHING
One careless mistake, and dry season will turn your plantation into ashes. Nobody warns you about the cost of firebreaks, monitoring, and prevention until disaster strikes.
4️⃣ PROCESSING IS NOT CHEAP
It’s not just about harvesting. You need to extract the oil and that requires a mill. If you don’t have one nearby, get ready to spend on transportation and processing fees.
5️⃣ DISEASE WILL DESTROY YOUR INVESTMENT
They only talk about high yields but they won’t tell you about diseases like Ganoderma rot and Fusarium wilt. Treatment is expensive, and once your trees are infected, you could lose everything.
6️⃣ LABOR COSTS WILL SHOCK YOU
You can’t run a plantation alone. Workers are needed for planting, weeding, fertilizing, disease control, and harvesting all year round. Cheap labor? Forget it. “Quality workers cost money.”
7️⃣ SEEDLINGS ARE JUST THE BEGINNING
Buying seedlings is the easy part. What comes after is where the real money goes. Poor management? Say goodbye to your investment.
HOW TO REDUCE EXPENSES AND SURVIVE BEFORE THE TREES START PRODUCING
✔ INTERCROPPING FOR EARLY INCOME – Instead of waiting 3–4 years with no income, plant cash crops like maize, vegetables, plantain, or legumes between the oil palm rows. This helps cover maintenance costs while also improving soil fertility.
✔ USE COVER CROPS TO REDUCE WEEDS – Instead of clearing weeds yearly, plant nitrogen-fixing cover crops like Mucuna and Pueraria to control weeds naturally and improve soil fertility.
✔ APPLY ORGANIC FERTILIZERS – Instead of spending all your money on chemical fertilizers, use poultry manure, compost, and empty fruit bunches (EFB) to cut costs.
✔ SPACE OUT FERTILIZER APPLICATION WISELY – Apply fertilizers only when necessary and during rainy seasons to maximize absorption and avoid waste.
✔ INVEST IN FIREBREAKS EARLY – Clear buffer zones around your plantation before dry season to reduce the risk of wildfires spreading.
✔ PARTNER WITH NEARBY FARMERS FOR PROCESSING – Instead of struggling with processing costs alone, join forces with other farmers to share milling expenses.
✔ MONITOR FOR DISEASES EARLY – Regularly inspect your trees and remove infected palms quickly to stop the spread. Prevention is cheaper than treatment!
✔ START SMALL, EXPAND LATER – Don’t rush into planting hundreds of hectares. Manage a small portion properly first, learn the real costs, and then scale up.
🔥 BEFORE YOU JUMP IN, ASK YOURSELF: ARE YOU FINANCIALLY PREPARED FOR THE REAL COST OF RUNNING AN OIL PALM PLANTATION?
If nobody told you this before, now you know. THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU START!
