6 Mixing Tips You Can Use Right Away

I just finished up a Custom Mix Tutorial for a client and I thought I'd share some takeaways with you while they're fresh in my mind.

Ready? Here we go!

1. Use transient designers to change the rhythm and feel of a track. If a kick drum is too long, you can shorten it to make the rhythm more exciting and snappy. Conversely, you can lengthen a bass part to fill up the heaviness of a sound so that your foundation doesn't fall apart.

2. Mixing is NOT linear. You don't go from one plug-in to another down the signal chain. You add plug-ins where they need to go in the signal depending on how the track is reacting to the rest of the music. If that's one more EQ at the end or a compressor at the beginning, so be it.

3. Something that sounds narrow and mid-range-y can sound odd in solo but perfect when you add the rest of the low end to the mix.

4. More compression is fine. In fact, you're probably not adding enough because you're scared of it. Stop listening to conservative advice and start pushing the limits of what your plug-ins can do.

5. A little bit of saturation all over the place adds more character and warmth to your mix than cranking up the saturation only on your mix bus.

6. When in doubt, use parallel processing. Parallel processing will make your mix sound more professional.
