Suliamon Olufemi: Forgotten On Death Row in Saudi Arabia

1. Suliamon Olufemi, a Nigerian national from Badagry Lagos, was born on 20 April 1978. He travelled to Saudi Arabia on an Umrah visa in September 2002. On arrival at the airport in Jeddah, Suliamon called his friend who he was scheduled to stay with in Jeddah.

2. On 28 September 2002, some days after Suliamon arrived in Saudi Arabia, he followed the Nigerians that offered him accommodation to a car wash in the Bab Sharif area of Jeddah, where many African nationals worked as car cleaners. On the day, a group of local men with guns, among them a police officer, raided the location and a dispute broke out between the local men and the foreign nationals which resulted in the police officer getting injured, he later died. The following day, 29 September 2002, mass arrests were carried out of foreign nationals by the Saudi authorities, including Suliamon Olufemi. He was put on trial for the incident and the death of the police officer.

3. Amnesty International received reports that Suliamon was tortured during interrogation in order to force him to sign statements written in Arabic, a language that he could neither read nor understand. Under duress he was said to have put his fingerprints, which can be taken as a substitute for a signature, to a statement written in Arabic. He later learnt in court that he had “signed” a statement that said that he had hit the police officer over the head with a gun.

4. Suliamon Olufemi was sentenced to death in May 2005 following a closed trial which took place in the absence of legal or consular representation or adequate interpretation and translation facilities.

5. According to Shari’a law in Saudi Arabia, if a crime is punished under the rule of qisas (retribution), as in Suliamon Olufemi’s case, relatives of the murder victim have the right to decide if the offender should be executed or pardoned, in which case the death penalty is dropped, sometimes in return for diya (compensation or “blood money”) Family of the deceased police officer demanded payment of diya.

6. Diya was paid for Suliamon Olufemi over a year ago in July 2024. Others prosecuted together with Suliamon were released after payment of diya. But Suliamon is still in detention.

7. Amnesty International urges the government of Saudi Arabia to release Suliamon. The Nigerian authorities must intervene to end the anguish of Suliamon and his family.

Tribal Clash Rocks Mandilas Market in Lagos Island — One Dead, Several Injured as Violence Erupts

Chaos erupted at Mandilas Market in Lagos Island on Tuesday after a heated dispute between two traders over job earnings turned violent, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

Eyewitnesses said the altercation began when a Yoruba trader brought a customer to an Igbo trader for a business deal. When it was time to share the proceeds, an argument ensued. The confrontation quickly escalated into a fight, during which the Igbo trader allegedly stabbed the Yoruba trader.

The victim was rushed to the hospital but later confirmed dead, sparking anger among his friends and supporters from the Agarawu area, who stormed the market in retaliation. Several innocent bystanders were reportedly injured in the chaos.

The Igbo trader accused of the stabbing was beaten by the crowd before being taken into police custody. The Lagos State Police Command has since confirmed the arrest and assured that normalcy has been restored to the area.
Authorities have called for calm, urging Lagos residents not to inflame ethnic divisions, while reinforcing security to prevent further violence.
The incident has raised serious concerns about fragile inter-ethnic relations in one of Lagos’s busiest commercial hubs.

Man stabs colleague to death in Lagos over money dispute

A deadly confrontation occurred on Wednesday in the Mandilas area of Lagos Island, leaving one person dead after a stabbing incident.

The Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, through CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Police Public Relations Officer, clarified in a statement made available to PUNCH Online that there was no tribal clash or ethnic conflict at Balogun Market, where the incident took place.

According to the police, “The Lagos State Police Command hereby wish to inform the general public that there was no tribal clash or disturbance between any ethnic groups and others inside Balogun Market today.

“There was an incident of a free-for-all fight between some hoodlums and miscreants in the Balogun Market in the early hours of today at around 11 am.

“During the fight, one Ebuka Adindu from Abia State stabbed one Sodiq Ibrahim from Kogi State to death, and the said Ebuka Adindu in turn stabbed himself on the shoulder and became unconscious. He is currently under arrest in the hospital, where he is being treated.

“Investigation into the matter will be concluded, and he will be prosecuted after he has been discharged from the hospital. There was no loss of innocent lives or injury to any person or damage to the goods and properties of marketers inside Balogun Market.”

The police emphasised that no innocent lives were lost beyond the victim, no other injuries were reported, and there was no damage to goods or property at the market.

Normalcy has been restored, and residents and traders have been urged to continue their activities without fear.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, called on residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with the police to sustain peace in the state, stressing that Lagos remains generally peaceful.

Eyewitnesses said the conflict began as a disagreement between the two men over the division of money from a recent job. The argument escalated, resulting in the fatal stabbing.

Bystanders reportedly restrained the attacker before handing him over to authorities. Tensions briefly flared again when friends of the deceased protested, but order was quickly restored.

A sad incident involving a lady named Bridgêt Stêphen happened. She passed away in her room, and her body started to decay with maggots. Sh0ckingly, her neighbors on|y noticed after several dãys.

Bridget's pãssing was a surprise, as she seemed well until then. Her dôôrs and windows were shut, and her phone had no battery, but she was still listening to music with her earphones on. Th3re were no signs of struggle before her unfôrtunate dêath.

This story is a reminder that we should stay cônnected with our friends and neighbors. Sômetimes, we isolate ourselves for peace and privacy, but it's important to have pêople around us who care.

Rêmember, we all need support, love, and someone to talk to when we're going through tôugh times. You might even find comfort in friends who are not family but care deep|y about you. Don't believe the idea that we can go through life alone.

It's wôrth considering if our phones and the internet contribute to our loneliness. We ôften get so absôrbed in our screens that we ignôre the people right in front of us. Let's try pãying more attention to those around us.

Rêst in peace, Brîdget 🙏
