TENANCY LAW: LAGOS DISOWNS FALSE PUBLICATION

The Lagos State Government has disowned the false online publication alleging an update to the Tenancy Law, describing it as untrue and fabricated.

A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, described the viral online publication as false and a figment of the imagination of fraudulent individuals who are out to scam unsuspecting members of the public.

In her words, “The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to a fabricated online publication stating that the Lagos State Tenancy Law has been updated to better protect the tenants and regulate the landlord practices. For the avoidance of doubt, the Lagos State Government wishes to state unequivocally that the said publication did not emanate from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA)."

“The Lagos Government is hereby informing members of the Public, particularly Lagosians, that the Tenancy Law of 2015 is still subsisting. However, the bill for a new Tenancy Law is under due consideration at the Lagos State House of Assembly and yet to be passed into Law”, she added, declaring that members of the general public will be adequately informed when the Tenancy Bill is passed into law.

Odunuga-Bakare also revealed that the Ministry of Housing is currently engaging stakeholders, including practitioners, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), CDC, CDA and Royal Fathers across the five IBILE divisions. The engagements are focused on discussing the culture of monthly payments and establishing a clear understanding of the process of real estate transactions at all levels.

SANWO-OLU TO OPEN DEMURIN ROAD, TWO OTHERS

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is set to hand over yet another set of projects to Lagosians, on Thursday, with the commissioning of Demurin Road in Kosofe Local Government Area. Also to be commissioned are two other roads, Agidi and Church Street - in the Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area.

“It is all about boosting connectivity and making life more comfortable for our people,” the Governor said about the projects. The roads will serve as alternative links to the 3rd Axial Road with Ikorodu Road.

Demurin-Agidi Road, a major arterial that connects Ketu, a densely populated area with huge markets and estates, to other parts of the Local Government, is an important bypass to Ikorodu Road from the Third Axial Road at Alapere Housing Estate. It connects the recently commissioned Ramond Estates and Sterling Heights Estate in Ajelogo. Demurin-Agidi Road, aside from serving as an essential alternative bypass for facilitating the movement of people and goods to the popular Mile 12 International Commodities Market and the Owode Onirin Auto Parts Market on Ikorodu Road, also serves as a link to several other adjoining communities in Agboyi-Ketu LCDA.

Given the volume of traffic emanating from its consideration as an important bypass, Demurin-Agidi Road deteriorated from increased and inadequate hydraulic structures which negatively impacts travel time. The deterioration also led to drivers and commuters facing hardship on the road.

Given the strategic economic importance of these roads, the administration of Mr. Sanwo-Olu and the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat approved the total rehabilitation and upgrade of the roads to a standard that will stand the test of time.

JUST IN: SENATE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS SIX-MONTH SUSPENSION FOR NATASHA

THE Senate is considering the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months.

This follows investigations from the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, which cited her for total violation of Senate rules.

According to the committee’s recommendation read by its Chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, her suspension will take effect from March 6, 2025.

It also recommended that her office will be locked, and she will be barred from accessing the National Assembly premises during the suspension period, her salaries and those of her legislative aides will be withdrawn.

She will be prohibited from representing Nigeria in any official capacity as a senator of the Federal Republic during the suspension. The Kogi Central lawmaker may also submit a written apology for the Senate to review her suspension, according to recommendations by the committee.

The Senate is expected to vote on the recommendation, which, if upheld would effectively strip Senator Natasha of all legislative privileges for the duration of her suspension.

This is coming as Senator Natasha has once again brought before the Senate a petition alleging sexual harassment from Akpabio. But this time, it was signed by her constituents.

During the plenary on Thursday, Senator Natasha was asked whether the matter was already before any court of law. But she said it was not.

Following protocol, the lawmaker was directed to formally submit the petition, after which it was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for investigation.

The committee has been given four weeks to conduct its probe and report to the Senate.

This marks the second time the Kogi Central lawmaker has raised the allegation in the chamber.

The report is untrue. The Commission has not announced any resumption date for the CVR.

We appeal to the public to disregard the false narrative.
