Why I am aspiring to serve as NMA Sec Gen 2024/2026 - Dr. Ben Egbo

By Mohammed Kaka

An aspirant for the position of Secretary General in forthcoming National election of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Ben Egbo has revealed the reasons behind his aspiration.

Dr. Egbo who stated his reasons in a document he made available to Baushe Times, said if given the opportunity as Sec Gen of the association, he will create conducive avenues for young Doctors to have direct and unfettered access to the NMA Secretariat.

According to him, he will use his position to engender deliberate actions, packages and projects to attract the young doctors to the NMA, thereby actualizing the “Bridge 2 mantra.”

He said if given the mandate, he will work to ensure a cordial and seamless working relationship between the SEC GEN and the NMA President, circulate minutes of the previous meetings well ahead for members to read and digest before coming for the meetings.

Dr. Ben Egbo further promised to if elected as Sec Gen, ensure meticulous attention to details of meeting procedures with efficient and efficacious handling of the secretariat correspondences as well as keeping records of the association and council as a gatekeeper of history without fear or favour.

He also pledged to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during National Executive council (NEC)/Annual Delegates meeting (ADM) proceedings to create room where members would disagree without being violently disagreeable.

He said in conjunction with the protocols, he will ensure that meetings are held in conducive atmospheres with good communication systems.

According to Dr. Egbo, the Secretariat of the association would be made safer and accessible to all Nigerian Doctors irrespective of status or age differences.

Dr. Ben Egbo also vowed to ensure that any document needed by a Nigerian Doctor is available within 24 hours both from the NMA and the MDCN, by establishing a seamless collaboration with the MDCN.

"I will ensure a digital NMA as have never been see before, a digital NMA that will enable members to access information fast and easy, as well as ensure free internet browsing for all members at all NMA meetings", he further promised.

The Aspirant for the position of Secretary General of the NMA added that he will campaign for efficient solar electricity source in at the NMA Secretariat and engender moves to replicate this in all NMA houses. He also promised to make the current NMA Website more interactive and user friendly where members can get real-time information on all activities of the association.

The Doctor said further that, he will ensure a Broad band Zoom link for all meetings for on line remote participations both within and outside the shores of our great Nigeria.

He said, in conjunction with the NOC, he will work to attract corporate sponsorship for the association's meetings.

"A situation where we spend more than 70% of our total revenue generated for meeetings is totally unacceptable. I hope to engender new templates for revenue drives for the Association, a situation where levies are imposed on our meagre and “anaemic” salaries in an anathema to productive medical practice", he said.

Dr. Egbo promised to engender robust communication with the NMA's affiliate members both within Nigeria and members in the Diaspora.

In the template of his vision, Dr. Egbo pledged to develop the NMA's marketing outfit to conserve funds and at the same time made it a veritable avenue to generating revenue.

He concluded by promising to develop a national register for all medical doctors, including those not actively practicing medicine (some are no longer interested in renewing their annual practicing licenses) for proper dissemination of information as well as serving as a reservoir for fund raising activities
