Many men across Nigeria and West Africa have quietly used alcohol to buy extra minutes in the other room.
Nobody calls it that. But that is the arrangement — a few drinks before, and the night lasts longer than it would have.
The part worth admitting: it sometimes works. That is exactly why the belief survives from man to man, passed on quietly among friends.
But it helps to understand what you may be paying for those minutes.
Alcohol does not target one part of your body. It slows the entire nervous system. That is why a man who gets a cut while drinking may barely feel it until the following morning.
The delay works the same way. Less sensation reaching the brain, and a slower signal along the reflex that ends things. You are not gaining control. You are feeling less.
Which raises the first problem. The minutes are bought with the very sensation you stayed longer for.
Then the risks begin to stack.
The amount that numbs enough is usually higher than the amount that helps. At that level, alcohol may already be working against the blood flow that reliable response depends on. Many men chase delay and lose the er****on instead.
Tolerance moves the target. What worked last month may need more next month, while the effects on your circulation, your sleep and your hormones keep accumulating quietly.
Judgement gets numbed along with sensation. The extra minutes are often spent less present, less aware of your partner, less connected to what is happening.
Deep sleep suffers, and deep sleep is when much of your hormonal recovery happens. Tonight's minutes may be paid for out of the rest of your week.
Over time, heavy regular drinking may affect the liver and testosterone production — which sit upstream of drive, energy and response. Used long enough, the method may worsen the very thing it was meant to fix.
And nothing is being trained. The minutes are rented for one night. Sober, you are exactly where you started, which is why men who use this rarely stop needing it.
You cannot numb one part of your body without numbing the rest.
What have you been told about alcohol and performance — and did anyone ever explain the cost?
