President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Oluwaseun Faleye as the new Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

Gov Otti meets with labour over notice of strike

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has said that his administration has not received funds from the federal government to implement any new wage award.

Mr Otti said this during a meeting with labour leaders, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint Negotiating Council in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.

He said: “There has been misleading stories all over the place that the federal government gave monies to the state governments to implement the wage award.

“Last time I checked, there were no such monies. This state has not received a dime from the federal government to implement any wage award.”

Mr Otti also said that the government has been implementing the minimum wage as the state’s payroll indicates that the least-paid worker receives a N30,000 monthly salary.

“I see the payroll, and I didn’t see anyone who is paid less than N30,000, which is the minimum wage.

“Maybe something is wrong, and I’ll like the accountant-general to please look into that because what is available to me shows we are complying with the minimum wage of N30,000 and that the least-paid worker is paid N30,000.

“When I read in the media that we are not complying, I took it as a hatchet man’s job, but you repeating it here means something is wrong somewhere.

“I’ll like that a reconciliation happens between the Organized Labour and the Office of the Accountant General,” Mr Otti said.

He said that there was a need for the minimum wage to be increased due to economic concerns such as the removal of fuel subsidy, foreign exchange rate adjustments, inflation, and poverty.

Mr Otti reiterated the state government’s readiness to implement the new minimum wage... https://www.premiumtimesng.com/?p=713065

Police, FRSC may clash again over e-CMR enforcement

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) may again clash over the enforcement of the digitalised Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) in the country.

The Force had, in a statement on Saturday by its spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced that it would commence the enforcement within the next 14 days.

Mr Adejobi said the action aims to rejuvenate and digitise the motor vehicle registration system to combat insecurity in the country.

“As part of the efforts of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, NPM, PhD, to enhancing the security of lives and property, the Nigeria Police Force is set to commence the enforcement of the digitalised Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) within the next 14 days, specifically on the 29th of July, 2024, to rejuvenate and digitalise the motor vehicle registration system, significantly bolstering our nation’s safety and security framework,” he stated.

He also explained that the CMR, as a digital tool, would help the police to access real-time repositories of motor vehicle data in the country and further support the police in fighting against vehicle-related crimes.

The spokesperson said Mr Egbetokun had ordered the full publicity of the development and its enforcement across the country.

He added that the Force, while seeking the understanding and support of all well-meaning Nigerians and residents on this initiative, remains committed to leveraging technology and strategic approaches to enhance public safety and national security.

Mr Adejobi said the enforcement of the e-CMR is necessary to ensure a safer and more secure environment for vehicle ownership and decimate the trend of vehicle theft by significantly reducing the possibi... https://www.premiumtimesng.com/?p=713058

200 students receive NDDC scholarships for post-graduate studies abroad

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has presented post-graduate foreign scholarship letters to 200 students from the Niger Delta region.

The Chairperson of the NDDC Governing Board, Chiedu Ebie, handed over the letters to the beneficiaries during a pre-departure ceremony in Port Harcourt on Saturday, according to a statement issued by the commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama.

Mr Ebie said that the students would pursue doctorate and master’s degrees in various fields of learning abroad.

“The scholarship scheme is an important component of NDDC’s human capital development programme, providing free education to scholars in the Niger Delta.

“We know that education is the most powerful weapon for changing the fortunes of the Niger Delta region.

“We expect the beneficiaries to make the best use of this opportunity given to them to acquire technical expertise for the benefit of the region and Nigeria,” he said.

The Managing Director of the NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku, assured the beneficiaries that their tuition and accommodation would be paid immediately.

He said that the NDDC had awarded scholarships to thousands, with many of the beneficiaries excelling in their academic pursuit and careers.

“You need to emulate your predecessors and come back home to add value to the society, making the Niger Delta people proud,” he advised the students.

Mr Ogbuku advised the students to focus on their studies to succeed, assuring them that those who got distinctions in their Master’s programme would receive scholarships for a PhD.

Lithuanian club, FK Dembava signs 23 Nigerian footballers

Lithuanian Football Club, FK Dembava, has signed no fewer than 23 Nigerian footballers to compete in the Lithuania II Lyga.

Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministry (OPM), said in a statement in Port Harcourt on Saturday that OPM brokered the signing of the footballers.

He said that the players, including eight females and 15 males, signed their contracts at a short ceremony in Port Harcourt.

“We invited club owners and decision makers from Europe to conduct trials for talented footballers in Nigeria, which lasted over two weeks.

“The signing of the 23 talented footballers completes the first historic church-sponsored international football scouting, marking a significant milestone in the careers of these young footballers.

“They will play in the men’s and women’s leagues in that Schengen country.”

Chinyere said that the contract signing ceremony was attended by the club officials and players’ lawyers and relatives.

“This approach ensures that the scouted players secure direct contracts; thereby eliminating the uncertainty of trials in Europe.

“Visa, flight tickets, and free accommodations have already been provided for the players.

“The new signees will travel directly to the club to play football not for trials,” he said.

The clergy added that the footballers had been provided with the opportunity to showcase their skills and bring pride to Nigerian football fans.

Umahi clarifies Tinubu administration’s position on inherited, uncompleted road projects

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has debunked rumours in the media claiming that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) stepped down inherited road projects.

During a meeting with contractors in Abuja, Mr Umahi said that such information was misleading, adding that neither President Bola Tinubu nor FEC gave that directive.

He said that the ministry was only directed by the president to review all projects in the country and decide which would be given priority based on the availability of funds.

Mr Umahi said, “Some of these projects were awarded 18 years ago, some 10 years ago, others five years ago.

“On the issue of new projects, if we have appropriation that has not been completed, at least one kilometre, we are not going to carry out such appropriation.

“That is what FEC is concerned about. We can’t have N500 million on budget but procurement is supposed to be N50 billion or N100 billion and you go ahead to award such a project. We have been directed not to do so.”

Mr Umahi reiterated the federal government’s determination to introduce funding and budgeting innovations that would fast-track road infrastructure development nationwide.

He said that FEC had directed the Ministry of Works to collaborate with the Federal Ministries of Finance, Budget, and National Planning to develop proper budgetary estimates.

This, he said, was for the 2025 financial year for projects that were not appropriately budgeted for but have attained probably 80 per cent completion so that such projects would be completed and delivered.

He, however, said that projects with huge procurement costs with little appropriation and with little completion milestones would be reviewe... https://www.premiumtimesng.com/?p=712974

Coalition demands replacement of state for petroleum minister

Coalition of Private Energy Entrepreneurs has called on President Bola Tinubu to replace the current Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo.

National President of the coalition Greg Akume in a statement on Friday urged President Tinubu to immediately replace the minister “with a more capable and proactive leader.”

The coalition said it demands a “leader who understands the intricacies of the energy market, values the contributions of the private sector, and is committed to fostering an environment that supports innovation, efficiency, and growth, as suggested by them, should be allowed to oversees the affairs of the ministry.

“Over the past months, it has become painfully clear that the leadership of the Ministry of Gas under the current minister has been ineffective in addressing critical challenges facing our industry”, reeled out the challenges presently being face in the sector to include regulatory bottlenecks, inefficiencies in the allocation of resources.

“Others challenges as enumerated by them, are, lack of transparency, and an overall sluggishness in policy implementation. Such issues have severely hampered the growth and sustainability of the private sector in energy, which is vital for the nation’s economic stability and development.”

They argued that the “existing regulatory framework under the current minister’s leadership has proven to be a significant obstacle to the efficient operation of the private energy sector.

“There have been numerous instances of inequitable and inefficient allocation of gas resources, which have favored certain entities without due process. This practice undermines fair competition and... https://guardian.ng/?p=2554688

Afenifere faults Supreme Court judgement on LG autonomy

Yoruba group Afenifere has frowned at the recent judgement of the Supreme Court that granted full autonomy to the 774 local councils in the country.

Afenifere, in a statement signed by its leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, and National Publicity Secretary, the judgement was a judicial conspiracy with President Bola Tinubu against the country.

The seven-man panel of the Supreme Court, in the landmark judgement that outlawed the Joint Allocation Account Committee (JAAC), through which all funds to local governments are paid to state government accounts, declared that all council allocations should be paid directly into their accounts.

While stressing that the constitution was misinterpreted by the apex court in its judgement, the group maintained that the position of the court does not reflect the principles of federalism, adding that the local government system is an exclusive preserve of the states.

Afenifere said: “Rather than interpret the constitution to uphold its elementary but overriding federal principle, which recognises only a two-tier federal structure of the central government and federating states, the Supreme Court played to the gallery and wittingly allowed itself a most retrogessive declaration that the power of the government is portioned into three arms of government: the federal, the state, and the local government.

“For the avoidance of any doubt, Afenifere makes bold to say that in line with its negotiated basis of existence, Nigeria is a “federation consisting of states and a federal capital territory,” as affirmed by Section 2(2) of the 1999 constitution.

“While Afenifere frowns at corruption and misuse of public funds at levels of government, it condemns in most un... https://guardian.ng/?p=2554687

Refrain from Derogatory Statements Against Tinubu, Kogi senator warns Ndume

Senator representing Kogi West, Sunday Karimi, has urged Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume, to refrain from making derogatory statements against President Bola Tinubu-led government.

In an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, Ndume had said the federal government’s inability to address security challenges and other issues is a major challenge, adding that some ministers are unable to meet with President Bola Tinubu to discuss the matter.

He had said: “The major problem with this government is that its doors are closed, to the extent that even some ministers cannot see the President, not to mention members of the National Assembly, who do not have the opportunity to meet with him and discuss the issues affecting their constituencies.”

Ndume later told journalists at the National Assembly that the president had lost touch with reality as some forces had caged him at A*o Rock.

Weighing in, Senator Karimi, in a statement, emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and criticism in governance.

He said many of Senator Ndume’s allegations lack substantiated evidence and are driven by a “pull-down syndrome” rather than a genuine commitment to improving governance.

“As an experienced legislator with over two decades of service in the National Assembly, Senator Ndume is urged to exercise caution in his statements and avoid making inflammatory remarks that could further polarize the polity and divide the nation,” he said.

Senator Karimi called on Ndume to adopt a more constructive and responsible approach to criticism.

Dangote Refinery to Import One Million Barrels of Brazilian Crude

The Dangote Refinery in Lagos to import a cargo of Brazilian crude, adding to the large number of overseas barrels that Africa’s biggest oil-producing nation is taking.

Traders with knowledge of the matter said the refinery, which is still ramping up to full capacity, would receive a one-million-barrel cargo of Brazil’s Tupi crude for delivery in the second half of next month.

The cargo was sold by Petrobras, the traders told Bloomberg.

Officials at the company, and one at Dangote, didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

It’s the first time that Brazil has exported oil to Nigeria, according to data from the Latin American country’s commerce ministry.

Aliko Dangote, the chairman of Dangote Group said the refinery would continue to import crude oil as his refinery scales up production and seeks alternative supply contracts.

The refinery took delivery of 11 WTI cargoes, or 9 million barrels, between February and May, contrasting with around 18 million barrels of Nigerian crude deliveries.

Now, the move to secure a longer-term offtake agreement signals a commitment by the refinery to more permanently diversify its crude sources, coinciding with a period of extreme demand weakness for Nigerian supply.

“It’s a little surprising that they are seeking term WTI at this stage,” said one West African crude trader, noting demand weakness that pushed Nigeria’s flagship Bonny Light crude to a discount to Dated Brent for the first time since November on May 17.
