Clean and Green: Oyo State’s Bold March Toward Environmental Excellence and Sustainability.

By Akinloluwa Akinbode

“Cleanliness is not just next to godliness, it is next to progress.”

Recent efforts by Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources demonstrate a practical commitment to building a cleaner and greener society. The state’s task force on environmental compliance has been relentless in enforcing waste management laws and clamping down on illegal dumping across major towns and cities. Offenders caught violating environmental regulations are being arraigned in line with existing laws, serving as deterrent to others and reaffirming the government’s zero-tolerance policy on environmental abuse.

But enforcement alone is not the end goal, but it is part of a broader vision. Under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, the state government, through the supervision of the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Seun Ashamu, is reshaping Oyo’s environmental outlook. The emphasis is not only on punitive measures but also on sustained public education, strategic waste management and the promotion of green initiatives that align with the principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the heart of this renewed effort lies a fundamental truth: cleanliness is both a civic duty and a public health necessity. Poor waste disposal habits, stagnant water and littered surroundings contribute significantly to disease outbreaks such as cholera, malaria and typhoid and even flooding, all of which continue to threaten vulnerable populations. The World Health Organization (WHO) has repeatedly highlighted the importance of environmental sanitation as one of the most effective and affordable means of preventing such diseases. In this light, Oyo State’s environmental enforcement drive represents not just policy ex*****on but a life-saving intervention.

Cleanliness and green urban planning are also economic enablers. Cities that prioritize sanitation, tree planting and waste recycling enjoy higher productivity, better air quality and increased investment appeal. A clean environment reflects order, responsibility and good governance, which are values that have become synonymous with Oyo State’s developmental strides under the current administration.

Environmental sustainability, however, requires shared responsibility. The government’s initiatives will only achieve lasting results when citizens fully embrace behavioral change. This is why community engagement remains central to Oyo State’s environmental agenda. From market women and artisans to students and youth groups, residents are being sensitized on the importance of proper waste disposal, recycling culture and personal hygiene. Traditional rulers, religious leaders and civic groups are also lending their voices to the campaign for a healthier and cleaner Oyo.

The call for environmental consciousness extends beyond immediate aesthetics. A green and well-maintained ecosystem contributes to climate stability, reducing flooding risks and preserving biodiversity. By protecting the environment today, Oyo State is safeguarding the livelihoods and health of future generations.

In every sense, Oyo’s renewed environmental consciousness is a model worth emulating. The synergy between enforcement, education and civic participation is gradually transforming the landscape and mindset of residents. A society that values cleanliness is one that values life, and in Oyo State, that message is becoming more than a slogan; it is a movement toward lasting sustainability and human well-being.

With discipline, awareness and collective will, environmental protection can indeed become a way of life in Oyo state.

📣 OYO STATE LAUNCHES ENTERTAINMENT TAX CLEARANCE INITIATIVE

According to reports and a press release shared by Hon. Adelabu Tunde, the Oyo State Government has introduced an Entertainment Tax Clearance permit aimed at strengthening event compliance and boosting revenue for the provision of social amenities.

The initiative was unveiled at the Western Hall, House of Assembly, Secretariat, Ibadan, where stakeholders, including government officials, NGO representatives, and event centre owners, gathered to discuss how the new permit applies to entertainment activities such as parties, concerts, and weddings.

Hon. Adelabu Tunde explained that while the entertainment tax applies to event organizers, venue owners are encouraged to verify the permit status of clients before hosting events. He assured residents that the generated revenue will support social development across the state.

Addressing public concern, he also noted that, according to the Deputy Director of Internal Revenue, the Entertainment Tax Clearance does not amount to double taxation.

Media outfits such as GMN TV and Greenland World News covered the event, as Hon. Adelabu Tunde, serving as Principal Consultant, responded to stakeholders’ questions and emphasized the need for mutual understanding of the policy.

He urged residents and event stakeholders to embrace compliance with the new permit, stating that cooperation would help drive progress and development across Oyo State.

🎯 Key Highlights

Purpose: Support social amenities through entertainment tax revenue

Scope: Applies to events like parties, weddings, and concerts

Compliance: Encouraged for Oyo State’s development

Clarification: No double taxation (per Oyo State Internal Revenue)

Oyo State Environmental Task Force Arrests 7 for Illegal Waste Disposal on Median

In its continued effort to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment, the Oyo State Environmental Rapid Response Squad (ERRS), in collaboration with Environmental Health Officers from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, has apprehended seven individuals for illegally dumping waste on the road median in different parts of Ibadan.

The arrest was made during a routine monitoring and enforcement exercise carried out by the Task Force early this morning. The offenders were subsequently arraigned before Barrister Jubril Adio, where they were each fined ₦30,000 in accordance with the provisions of the Oyo State Environmental Laws.

Speaking on the development, an Environmental Health Officer who was part of the operation emphasized that the exercise aims not to witch-hunt residents but to curb the growing menace of indiscriminate waste disposal, which poses serious health and environmental risks to the public.

According to the officer, “Despite the government’s continuous effort in providing waste bins and designating approved collection points, some individuals still choose to dump refuse on the median, blocking drainages and defacing the city. This attitude must stop.”

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has reiterated its commitment to enforcing all environmental sanitation laws and urged residents to desist from illegal waste disposal, noting that such acts undermine the state government’s effort to sustain a clean, safe, and livable environment for all.

Residents are also advised to patronize only authorized waste contractors and to make use of designated refuse collection points within their areas.

The Ministry reaffirmed that the enforcement exercise will continue across all zones of the state until total compliance is achieved.

A Tale of Two Realities
The first video paints a sad picture — some residents carelessly dumping waste on our roads, undoing the government’s efforts to keep Oyo State clean.
But the second video tells another story — one of dedication, hard work, and commitment by the Oyo State Government to create a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful environment for us all.
Now, let’s pause and reflect:
👉 How can the government truly put an end to illegal waste dumping on road medians?
👉 Is the problem really the government — or our collective attitude toward sanitation and public responsibility?
It’s worth recalling that a social media influencer once faulted the Honourable Commissioner for Environment over waste placement in some parts of Ibadan. Yet, ironically, many of the same residents keep disposing of waste where they shouldn’t.
Let’s be honest with ourselves — real change begins when we change.
