NYSC Denies Political Motive in Withholding ‘Raye’s’ Certificate, Cites Missed Clearance
Silver News Ng.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has refuted allegations that it withheld the Certificate of National Service (CNS) of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye — popularly known as “Raye” — over her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement released on Sunday, NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu described the viral claims as unfounded, stating that Raye’s case was purely disciplinary. According to Embu, the corps member, who served in Lagos State, missed the mandatory April biometric clearance, prompting a two-month extension of her service year in line with NYSC Bye-Laws.

“Her situation is one among 131 cases where the certificates were withheld due to legitimate disciplinary reasons. The sanction is standard and has no political undertone,” Embu said.

The NYSC added that such extensions have been routinely applied to any corps member who fails to meet clearance requirements, stressing that the rule was enforced equally in all cases.

Raye rose to prominence earlier this year after a video in which she decried the high cost of living and economic hardship in the country went viral.

On Saturday, she took to Instagram, claiming NYSC refused to hand her the CNS during the collection exercise, alleging that she was unfairly marked absent despite physically presenting herself for clearance in April.

She further alleged that her Local Government Inspector repeatedly told her to wait during the process, later declined to clear her, confiscated her file, and ordered her to leave the office.
