It is only in Africa that we mock our leaders for not being able to speak flawless English, French and other European languages that we have foolishly accepted as our lingua francas. The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, cannot speak English, French or any other European language, but China is richer than any European country. And because they are relevant, the Europeans are now learning Mandarin.

In Kano, they had a Governor, Aliyu Sabo Bakin Zuwo, who could not speak English. But in just two months, he brought a lot of social justice to Kano. English is not a measure of intelligence. There are foolish people in England who can speak better English than Professors in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, you see African leaders at the African Union meetings in Addis Ababa. Everyone wears suits and ties and speaks English, French, Arabic, Portuguese or some other imposed language.

President Bola Tinubu gave a good speech at the seventy-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. But what is wrong if he spoke in Yoruba and someone interpreted it into Hausa, Igbo and English? We, as Africans, must reclaim more of our cultural independence from Europe, and not just our political independence. As a starter, legislative sessions in each state could be done in local languages in ethically homogeneous states like the Southwest, Northwest, and Southeast.

Let us learn from President Olusegun Obasanjo and Ben Murray-Bruce. Before 1999, there were no global Nigerian music stars who began their careers in Nigeria and spoke with Nigerian accents until they passed the local content policy mandating all Nigerian radio stations to play a minimum of 40% local music. And boom! Nigerian music took off. And a British citizen and British accented Tiwa Savage had to relocate to Nigeria to blow. When you promote your culture, it also has a positive impact on your economy.

Don't save or invest everything for the future. Nobody knows tomorrow. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, the house you live in and the car you drive are some of the only things you can personally enjoy while on Earth. Because when you die, you cannot even control your name. People who never gave a damn about you when you were alive will use your name to profit. Whilst you lived, they shunned you. What religion did you come to Earth with? None. You did not even come to Earth with a name. Most people are adherents of the religion they hold because they were born to parents of that religion. Majority of humans on Earth did not choose their religion. They were taught what to believe. They inherited their religion!

If your parents were Northern Nigerian Muslims, you would have been a Muslim. If they were Igbo Roman Catholics, that is what you would have been. If Yoruba Anglicans, then voila!

It was the British government that determined most of the religious backgrounds of people in Southern Nigeria. They deliberately gave permits to Catholic missionaries to go to only certain parts, and then gave Church of England missionaries permits to go to other parts, while giving Methodists permits for other parts.

They deliberately forbade any missionaries from crossing into the core North, because they wanted the North and South to be divided by religion, so they will both fight each other, rather than the colonialists.

The only place where their schemes failed was in the ancient Bini empire, because Bini culture was too advanced to accept an imposed religion. Western style Christianity failed to uproot traditional African religion in Benin. And that was the real reason why they destroyed Benin in 1897. The advanced reason was a subterfuge.

This they did to make it easy for them to divide and politically dominate us, while they economically exploited our country.
