Protest Grounds Owerri

As at 7:55AM, there was no vehicular movement along the popular Wetheral and Douglas Roads in Owerri, Imo State, as residents joined the peaceful protest.

All major markets within the city were shut down following directives from market leaders instructing traders to close their shops in solidarity with the demonstration.

The protest, which was earlier thought to be limited to Abuja, has now spread to Owerri and other parts of the South-East, drawing attention to renewed calls for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

A number of Imo State participants at the ongoing Christian holy pilgrimage have reportedly escaped and failed to return to Nigeria after the exercise. The absconded pilgrims were part of the delegation sponsored by the Imo State Government through the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC).

Ikoro Okigwe from reliable sources was told that authorities have launched investigations to track the whereabouts of the missing pilgrims, while the NCPC has vowed to tighten screening processes to prevent future occurrences.

It would be recalled that not less than 1,000 Imolites participated in this year's pilgrimage sponsored by the administration of His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State .

Chima Amadi, a Desperate, Clannish Politician Without Roots – ICJPD

The Imo Coalition for Justice, Peace and True Democracy (ICJPD) has described the recent press briefing by The Mazi Organisation (TMO) as “an infantile outburst” orchestrated by desperate politicians.

Addressing journalists in Owerri on Wednesday, Ahumaraeze Ikechukwu, Secretary of the coalition dismissed TMO as a “mushroom contraption” lacking credibility and warned its leader, Dr. Chima Amadi, against name-dropping President Bola Tinubu, his Chief of Staff, and the INEC Chairman in public speeches.

Troops Nab Infamous ESN Leader in Imo Known as Gentle De Yahoo

The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of a notorious commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), identified as Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, popularly known as Gentle de Yahoo.

Okorienta was captured by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade in a joint operation with sister security agencies at his hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State.

According to the military, the operation led to the recovery of a cache of arms and items, including one English pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, a cartridge, six mobile phones, military and police uniforms, as well as a German flag.

Troops also uncovered a workshop used for dismantling stolen vehicles for resale and destroyed 10 motorcycles found at the scene.

Beyond the Imo operation, troops carried out coordinated missions in Adamawa, Katsina, and Kogi States, rescuing 11 kidnap victims. Five persons were freed in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa, another five in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina, while two were rescued in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The Army further reported that two terrorists were neutralised in Katsina, with an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a motorcycle recovered. In Benue, soldiers killed a violent extremist and seized charms and a mobile phone. Eleven suspects linked to armed robbery, gunrunning, and violent extremism were also arrested across Benue, Kogi, and Kaduna States.

Troops in Plateau State recovered 40 rustled cattle, which have since been returned to their owners.

The Nigerian Army credited these successes to sustained collaboration with sister services and security agencies.

Imo Journalist Ejike Ogbonna Granted N2m Bail After 30 Days in Detention

An Imo State-based journalist and publisher of First Citizen Newspaper, Ejike Ogbonna, has been granted bail of N2 million by a Magistrate Court in Owerri after spending 30 days in detention at the Tiger Base Police Unit. Ogbonna faces allegations of cybercrime involving defamation of a government official.

The bail, granted by Presiding Magistrate C.J. Uzoechi, includes conditions requiring a surety to provide proof of ownership of landed property within the court’s jurisdiction and a traditional ruler to endorse the bail bond. Magistrate Uzoechi noted that the offense is bailable, adjourning the case to October 3, 2025, for further hearing.

Ogbonna, who appeared in court in handcuffs, is facing a four-count charge related to alleged cyberbullying. He is accused of defaming Chinasa Nwaneri, Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Compliance, through a voice note allegedly circulated on social media.

Journalists in Imo State have condemned the arrest, describing it as an attack on media practitioners. They have urged the State Police Commissioner to caution officers against being used by government officials to target citizens. The case has sparked concerns about press freedom in the state, with calls for greater protection for journalists.
