‎GOV. OTTI SECURES THE RELEASE OF CITIZENS ON DEATH ROW AFTER 26 YEARS IN PRISON, FACILITATES THEIR REINTEGRATION INTO SOCIETY

‎The intervention of Abia State Governor, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has helped Mr. Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, an Abia citizen, and two other citizens of Nigeria from other regions to regain their freedom after 26 years in prison after they were sentenced to death.

‎Presenting the released individuals on Saturday 6th June, to Governor Otti, Hon. Simon Oshi from Enugu State, who contacted the Governor for his intervention, said that he got the information about the case through a social media influencer, Olumide Ogunsanwo, popularly known on the social Media space as "Sea King" and had to contact Governor Otti for his intervention.

‎"Now, when the popular social media influencer brought it up on social media, I took it upon myself and said, let me actually go and verify if what they are saying is true.

‎"So, I went with a team of lawyers and also our popular influencer here too, to visit the two young men in Kiirikiri prison. On getting there, I started interacting with them.

‎"And I asked him, Where are you from? He said he's from Abia State. I told him, I know your Governor, he's a very good man and an amazing leader. I will pass this message across to him and get back to you.

‎"They were sentenced to death in 2003 over a case of a stolen generator that he bought. So, I told His Excellency. Immediately, the next day, he sent the Attorney General of Abia State to Kirikiri to go and verify if all I told him was actually true.

‎"The Attorney General went there, got back to him, and he said, No, this can't be. It can't happen to a son of the soil in Abia State when he is the Governor. So, His Excellency, being a good leader and an amazing father to us all, hurriedly wrote a letter to the Governor of the State where they were held.

‎"From there, he kept on pushing and after spending 26 years in prison, His Excellency brought them back and now they have seen freedom., Hon. Oshi narrated.

‎Hon. Oshi thanked Governor Alex Otti for being a good and passionate leader and said that Abians would pay him back by voting him for a second term in office.

‎Receiving the condemned but rescued individuals – Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, Olawale Adediji, and the other one who could not join them on their journey to Abia State, Governor Alex Otti thanked Hon. Simon Oshi for his doggedness and consistency and encouraged him to continue to do what he is doing for the society.

‎He equally appreciated the social media influencer for a job well done, adding that, God might have allowed him (the social media influencer) to be remanded in the correctional facility for two weeks, just to help Mr. Igbojionu and Co to regain their freedom from death sentence and life imprisonment.

‎"A typical Nigerian would say it doesn't concern me but because you're a very good person, you took it upon yourself. If you didn't bring it to my attention, I wouldn't have known.

‎"So, by the time we enquired, the twist was that they were in Lagos but it was an Ogun State matter. I want to use this opportunity to also thank my brother, Governor, colleague, and friend, Dapo Abiodun, for also following through and being consistent.

‎"When I brought it to his attention and wrote the letter, he acknowledged it and said he was going to work on it. Just last week, I was away when he called me outside the country and said they have now been released.

‎"For us, justice is everything. You can have all the money in the world but if you don't contribute to building a fair and just society, your money is useless.

‎"We’ll all come and go. People leave so much behind. Once you close your eyes and you don't open them, that's it. That's the end. Whatever you would have accumulated and acquired would become useless,” the Governor stated.

‎Governor Otti, who assured that his government would give them the necessary support to bounce back to life, directed the Commissioner for Local Government and his Power and Public Utilities counterpart, who were present at the event, to work with the relevant Departments of government to ensure that they are reintegrated back into the society.

‎"It may not be their direct role, but I'm giving them the assignment to work with the relevant parts of government to ensure that they are reintegrated back into the society.

‎"We will support you and get you back into the society. Having said that, I want to welcome you back to this part of the world. Thank God for preserving you up to this time, " Gov. Otti added.

‎While thanking the Governor on behalf of his fellow condemned but freed and released inmates, Mr. Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, an indigene of Ikwuano LGA, narrated his ordeal, saying that as a dealer in generating sets, he bought a generator from one Segun Ajibade in 1999, and sold it only to see the person that sold the generator to him, coming back after two weeks to his shop with the police.

‎According to him, in what appears to be an arrangement, they beat him up and forced him to sign a statement they wrote by themselves while refusing to let him read through the statement.

‎He was taken to court and sentenced to death, where he stayed from 1999 when he was remanded in prison till 2003 when he was actually sentenced to death until 2025, making it 26 years of incarceration. He thanked the Almighty God for using Governor Otti to spare their lives.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu and his Power and Public Utilities counterpart, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday were present at the meeting.

I AM STILL IN LABOUR PARTY, ‎WE WILL BORROW FOR INVESTMENT, NOT CONSUMPTION – GOV. OTTI, REACTS TO SPECULATIONS ON JOINING THE APC OR COALITION OF OPPOSITION PARTIES.

‎Abia State Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has said that his administration would only borrow for investments when the need arises and not for consumption, making it clear that the State is yet to borrow in the last 2 years and a month that he has presided over the affairs of the State.

‎Governor Otti made this known on Tuesday, 1st July, during the welcome dinner organized by the Abia State Government for the Abia State Global Economic Advisory Council, ushering in the beginning of the 2025 mid-year retreat for the appointees of the Government.

‎The Governor was reacting to false claims of the opposition that he has been borrowing to run the State, drawing their attention to the recently published Debt profile report by the Debt Management Office (DMO), a Federal Agency that put Abia first among the States that reduced their debts between March 2024 and March 2025. According to the DMO report, within the period under review, Abia reduced its public debt exposure by 57.20%, the highest reduction across the country.

‎“There is nothing wrong with criticizing the Government, but you must criticize with facts. Opinions are free but facts are sacred.

‎“Some people have come out to say that we are borrowing, they are lying. Did I borrow from them? I saw a report yesterday that says that 26 out of the 36 States have actually reduced loans in the last 12 months and Abia came first, having reduced its debt profile by 57.20% in one year,” Dr. Otti disclosed amidst applause from the audience.

‎Speaking further, he said, “So, when we say we have not borrowed, we know what we are talking about. But that we have not borrowed doesn’t mean we will not borrow. We will borrow when we need to borrow. We will borrow for investments that are regenerative. We will not borrow to eat. We will not borrow to consume. We will borrow for capital expenditure,” the Governor asserted.

‎The Governor addressed the speculations and reports emanating from some quarters that he was planning to join the APC or the coalition currently being formed by some opposition elements in the country, stating clearly that he is still a member of the labour with the Supreme Court having resolved the crisis that threatened the survival of the party.

‎“I will just spend a few minutes talking about what some members of the Global Economic Council have been asking me. One of them is the report about 5 Governors decamping to APC… I’m still a member of the Labour Party and I’m not looking for where to decamp to.

‎“The second point is about coalition, and a lot of people have been asking me, are you a member of the coalition? And, my response is, have you seen my name? Have you seen me attending the coalition meeting?

‎“We are just busy doing the work that Abia people have given us. So, we are not attending any coalition meeting, I have not attended any one and nobody has invited me.

‎“I am happy where I am. Yes, we had issues, if you don’t have issues, you are dead… So, you wake up and there is one problem or the other, you solve the problem. You don’t run away from a problem and pretend to have solved it.

‎“When we had our problems, we fought all the way to the Supreme Court and retrieved our party at the Supreme Court. I believe that a few issues that remain would be resolved very soon because the Supreme Court Judgment was very, very clear,” Governor Otti assured.

‎The State Chief Executive disclosed that his administration came to do things right, stressing that, those who don’t want to do things right have no business in his Government. He warned those making noise about stomach infrastructure that Abians are not people who believe in handouts but hard - working people who just need the enabling environment, like good roads, clean environment, etc, to thrive in their businesses and daily endeavours.

‎Speaking further he said that making portable water available to the people is the next thing his administration is dealing with. “We want to get to that level where you open your tap and you have public water running. In the next few weeks, we are going to flag off the water project in Aba around CKC. There is also another one in Umuahia and a lot of other places. We will get there,” the Governor added.

‎Dr. Otti also disclosed that his administration has set up a Project Implementation Bureau, headed by an Abia son, Mr. Onyinye Nwosu, who left his job in Canada, where he was working with General Electric (GE), to contribute his quota for the growth and development of the State.

‎Governor Otti thanked Members of the 20-Member Advisory Council for their sacrificial support and contributions which have helped his administration record the achievements being celebrated within and beyond the State in the last 2 years.

‎“I want to thank everyone who contributed, particularly, the Council; anyhow you look at it, everything revolves round the economy… If you get your economy right, every other thing will fall in place.

‎“That’s why we went over and beyond to convince these 20 eggheads who are otherwise busy to guide us and we are lucky that they accepted. And, from all indications, they’ve been here for one year. They meet every quarter or when the need arises, to come up with ideas, download them and ours is just to implement,” the Governor stated.

‎Earlier in her speech on behalf of the Council, the Co-Chair of the Abia Global Economic Advisory Council, Prof. Ms. Arunma Oteh, said that it was an absolute pleasure to serve in the Economic Advisory Council and an absolute pleasure to see and be part of what has been achieved in Abia. She further stated that Abia is now truly the number one, not just in alphabet but also in performance.

‎In his vote of thanks, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu thanked the members of the Council for their sacrifices to help the administration succeed. He explained that the good thing about what the Council is doing is that the results are showing and Abians are very happy.

‎The event equally featured the cutting of a cake marking the first anniversary of establishing the Abia Global Economic Advisory Council. The following members of the Council were present; Prof. Ms. Arunma Oteh - Co-Chair, Mrs. Ifueko Okauru - Chair, M&E Committee, Mr. Victor Onyenkpa - Chair, Financing/roadshow Committee, Mrs. Ezinwa Okoroafor - Member, Mr. Chidi Ajaegbu - Member, and Dr. Olugbenda Adesida - Member including members of the State Executive Council and political appointees.

Why APC National Chairman Ganduje Resigned

Details have emerged on why the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, may have resigned from his position on Friday.

Saturday PUNCH reliably gathered that Ganduje quit his position over the reported move by former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to join the APC.

As early as 3pm on Friday, insiders at the national secretariat of the party informed our correspondent that the ex-national leader was threatening to resign over an agreement between President Bola Tinubu and Kwankwaso for the latter to join the party.

According to an insider, all the principal officers of the party, including the National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, had tried to prevail on him not to resign.

“We are currently pleading with him (Ganduje) not to resign. He is upset that Kwankwaso is coming to the APC. I think the two of them are sworn enemies. All the stakeholders are begging him to stay,” the source said.

However, around 4.15pm, the source informed one of our correspondents that Ganduje had resigned.

“He has eventually resigned. We couldn’t stop him. I think there is something personal between him and Kwankwaso, who is ready to join the APC after some discussions with the President,” the source added.

When asked to confirm if there was a crisis at the APC secretariat, a worker, said, “There is no crisis, just that the chairman has resigned and people gathered at the secretariat to discuss about it.”

Political rivals

Both Ganduje and Kwankwaso are former governors of Kano and were once political allies during their days in the Peoples Democratic Party.

Kwankwaso served as governor from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2011 to 2015, with Ganduje as his deputy during the second term.

However, their relationship deteriorated shortly after Ganduje succeeded Kwankwaso as governor in 2015 under the APC.

Since then, the two have become political rivals, frequently clashing over control of Kano’s political structure and influence.

Ganduje deposed the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, who was installed by and believed to be loyal to Kwankwaso.

But Sanusi was reinstated on May 23, 2024, by Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, under Kwankwaso’s leadership.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that Ganduje, who was elected APC National Chairman in August 2023, cited health grounds as the reason for his decision to quit the party.

When contacted to confirm Kwankwaso’s move to join the APC, one of his closest allies, Buba Galadima, said he was not aware of such a plan.

He, however, said he was privy to a meeting involving some APC stakeholders and the presidency to “sacrifice Ganduje and the Vice President, Kashim Shettima.”

Galadima said, “I am not aware of the defection plan. However, I know Kwankwaso and Ganduje have personal issues. I am equally aware that there was a meeting of APC stakeholders and the presidency three days ago where they agreed that Ganduje and Shettima should be sacrificed to bring a new set of people into government and the party.”

Similarly, the spokesperson for the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, declined to comment.

“I am not aware of such a move, and I can’t speak further on it for now,” he stated.

In a post on his X handle, one of Ganduje’s aides, Salihu Yakasai, operating account, wrote in all cap, “TINUBU WHY, APC WHY,” with three cry emojis.

A former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, also confirmed that Ganduje had resigned.

Ahmad, on his verified page, wrote, “The National Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Congress(APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, as confirmed by multiple sources.”

When Saturday PUNCH visited the APC National Headquarters in Abuja, several party supporters were seen gathered in clusters, discussing the development and awaiting official confirmation from the NWC.

Dalori as acting chair

Meanwhile, the APC is set to announce the party’s Deputy Chairman (North), Ali Dalori, as the Acting National Chairman following Ganduje’s resignation.

A source said, “Some APC leaders met at the Presidential Villa, where Ali Dalori was announced as the acting National Chairman, in accordance with the party’s constitution.

“According to the constitution, when the Chairman resigns, the Deputy Chairman from his zone in this case, the Deputy Chairman (North) assumes the position in an acting capacity.”

When one of our correspondents visited the APC National Headquarters in Abuja, some party supporters were seen gathered in clusters, discussing the development and awaiting official confirmation from the National Working Committee.

Attempts to reach the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, for confirmation or denial were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls from Saturday PUNCH.
