JUNE 12: GOV. ALIA HAS DEEPENS DEMOCRACY, STRENGTHENS INCLUSIVE GOVERNANCE IN BENUE—WOMEN AFFAIRS COMMISSIONER

The Benue State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Mrs. Theresa Odachi Ikwue, has congratulated Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, his Deputy, Barr. Dr. Sam Ode, mni, the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Mrs. Selumun Deborah Abee, the Chief Judge of Benue State, Hon. Justice Maurice Ikpambese, and the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga, on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

In a goodwill message issued on Friday to commemorate June 12, Hon. Ikwue described Democracy Day as a historic reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for democratic governance in Nigeria, noting that the day provides an opportunity to assess the nation's democratic progress and recommit to the ideals of justice, accountability, transparency, popular participation, and the rule of law.

The Commissioner particularly commended Governor Alia for what she described as his unwavering commitment to deepening democracy and strengthening democratic institutions in Benue State through inclusive governance, responsible leadership, and people-oriented policies.

According to her, the Alia administration has demonstrated a practical understanding of democratic governance by ensuring that the voices and aspirations of ordinary citizens remain at the center of government policies and programmes.

She noted that under Governor Alia's leadership, Benue has witnessed a renewed emphasis on transparency, accountability, service delivery, and citizen engagement, adding that the administration has consistently promoted fairness, equity, and inclusiveness in governance.

Mrs. Ikwue stated that the Governor has created opportunities for greater participation of women, youths, persons living with disabilities, traditional institutions, faith-based organizations, and community stakeholders in the governance process, thereby fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility among the people.

“Democracy is not merely about periodic elections; it is about responsive leadership, respect for institutions, adherence to the rule of law, and ensuring that government works for the people. “His administration has continued to strengthen public confidence in government through policies and programmes that directly impact the lives of citizens. The Commissioner further praised the Governor's support for women and vulnerable groups, describing it as a significant contribution to democratic development, social inclusion, and sustainable economic growth.

She noted that through strategic interventions and partnerships, the administration has continued to empower women economically, strengthen child protection mechanisms, support survivors of gender-based violence, and improve access to social services for vulnerable members of society.

Mrs. Ikwue specifically highlighted Governor Alia's commitment to women's economic empowerment through the Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up (NFWP-SU), describing the initiative as a transformative programme that is improving the socio-economic wellbeing of women across Benue State.

According to her, the project has created opportunities for thousands of women to access financial inclusion services, livelihood support, enterprise development opportunities, skills acquisition programmes, and community-driven economic initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and improving household incomes.

She explained that the Governor's support for the NFWP-SU demonstrates his administration's commitment to ensuring that women are not only beneficiaries of governance but active participants in the economic development and prosperity of the state.

The Deputy Chief Whip of the Benue State House of Assembly and member representing Mata Constituency, Hon. Dr. Simon Gabo, has commended the peaceful conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congresses in Ushongo Local Government Area, describing the exercise as orderly, transparent, and a strong demonstration of party unity.

Dr. Gabo, who spoke with journalists shortly after the congress held at Atekombo in Mbagba, said the large turnout of party faithful reflected the growing popularity of the APC in the area and across Benue State.

He noted that the enthusiastic participation of members also showed widespread satisfaction with the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

“What we witnessed today is a clear indication that APC remains strong and united in Mata and Ushongo. The peaceful atmosphere and massive turnout are evidence that our people believe in the party and the leadership it has provided,” Gabo said.

According to the lawmaker, the congress was conducted in an open arena under adequate security, where 27 ward officials and delegates were affirmed through what he described as a free, fair, and transparent process.

He stated that all the affirmed officials were presented before members and unanimously accepted without rancour, adding that the smooth conduct of the exercise demonstrated the political maturity of party stakeholders in the area.

Dr. Gabo further revealed that party members and constituents used the occasion to pass a resounding vote of confidence on Governor Alia, reaffirming their trust in his administration and endorsing his leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Our constituents have passed a clear vote of confidence on Governor Alia because they have seen the tangible impact of his administration. This confidence remains firm and unwavering,” he stated.

He added that Ushongo Local Government Area had benefitted significantly from the governor’s policies and development initiatives, noting that improvements in infrastructure, rural access, and social programmes had positively transformed the lives of residents.

“Ushongo has benefitted tremendously under this administration, and the same can be said of many parts of Benue State. That is why the people are solidly behind the governor and are determined to sustain their support,” he added.

The Deputy Chief Whip also dismissed allegations circulating in some quarters that he disrupted the congress, describing the claims as false and politically motivated.

“These allegations are nothing but the handiwork of mischief makers. The exercise had been peacefully concluded before nightfall, and I had already left the venue. It is unfortunate that some individuals would attempt to discredit such a transparent process,” he said.

He urged party members to remain united, respect the outcome of the congress, and work collectively toward strengthening the APC ahead of future elections.

Dr. Gabo congratulated all affirmed ward officials and delegates, including Hon. Barnabas Terwase Humbe, who emerged as ward party chairman, and charged them to intensify grassroots mobilization and sustain efforts to consolidate the party’s dominance.

He also thanked constituents for passing a vote of confidence on him, assuring them of continued quality representation and commitment to advancing the interests of Mata Constituency.

Meanwhile, the APC National Appeal and Petition Committee has described the ward congresses conducted across Benue State as peaceful, credible, and transparent.
Addressing party members at the APC State Secretariat in Makurdi, on Thursday, the committee chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Adamu, disclosed that the panel had not received any petitions or complaints regarding the exercise.

He consequently affirmed the results of the February 18 ward congresses as authentic and urged APC members to sustain their support for the party leadership and the Alia administration to enable continued delivery of democratic dividends to the people of the state.

FROM MAKURDI TO THE WARDS: COMMISSIONER IKWUE DRIVES BENUE SOCIAL WELFARE TO GLOBAL STANDARDS, DECENTRALIZING HOPE

In a strategic move that fundamentally redefines the relationship between government and the most vulnerable citizens, the Benue State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare (MWASW) has launched a landmark initiative to extend its protective mandate into every corner of the state.

Under the dynamic leadership of the Honourable Commissioner, Hon. (Mrs.) Theresa Odachi Ikwue, the Ministry is visibly executing its core mission: "Taking the Ministry from a building in Makurdi to the grassroots." This effort is directly in line with Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia's administration's mantra of inclusive governance, social justice, and protection of the dignity and rights of all Benue citizens.

The initiative is not a solo effort but a powerful collaboration between the Benue State Government, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Benue State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (BERWASA). This strategic partnership provides the muscle needed to decentralise critical social protection services and aggressively combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The MWASW, under Hon. Theresa Apochi-Ikwue, successfully trained a crucial contingent of 46 participants (two from each LGA) over three intensive days in Makurdi. The 3-day event was flagged off by Hon. Mrs. Theresa Ikwue on Wednesday, December 10th, and successfully concluded on Friday, December 13th, 2025.

The training of these LGA leads marks the pivotal first phase of a broader strategy aimed at covering all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 276 Council Wards.

As Commissioner Ikwue eloquently put it on December 8, 2025, “This is not just a training; it is a strategic deployment. Our goal is to dismantle the notion that the Ministry exists only within the walls of a building in Makurdi. By training and empowering these 46 LGA leads, we are planting seeds of protection and justice in every local government.”

This sentiment encapsulates the core of Governor Alia’s administration’s focus on ensuring that government services are felt directly by the people, no matter how remote their location.

These 46 officers are not merely attendees; they are now "pillars," immediately responsible for a cascaded “step-down” training programme to equip 552 Council Ward Coordinators.

This tiered approach creates a vigilant, proactive, and responsive network against SGBV. The training, which included hotel accommodation and covered vital areas such as the prevention of Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM), legal frameworks, and survivor-centred approaches, ensures that the state's policies translate into tangible safety for every woman and child.

“Benue State is taking a definitive leadership position in the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM), and all related crimes against humanity,” the Commissioner affirmed.

BENUE LINKS NIGERIA LIMITED TO RESUME MARINE SERVICES SOON.

– Acquires Taxis for Inter-State Travels.

Benue Links Nigeria Limited has concluded plans to revive its marine section and resume marine transport services for the good people of Benue State. The General Manager of Benue Links, Comrade Alexander Aondohemba Fanafa KSM MNIM, disclosed this during his appearance on “Burning Issues,” an audience-participatory program on Brothers FM 90.5 MHz, Makurdi, Benue State, on Friday, May 16, 2025.

According to Comrade Fanafa, the Benue State Ministry of Power, Renewable Energy, and Transport,under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner, Barr. Omale Omale, has procured and made available flying boats for the company’s use in marine transport. He noted that the resumption of marine transport services will not only enhance utilization of the state's waterways but will also support security patrols to curb the movement of bandits into the state through those routes.

In a related development, Comrade Fanafa announced the acquisition of sedan cars (four passengers and a driver) by Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, to boost the company’s interstate travel operations.

He concluded by expressing appreciation to the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for his immense support, which has enabled the company to effectively implement the people-centered transport initiatives of his administration. The Gombe State Police Command reported that five people died and eight others were injured when a truck transporting grains coming along Yola Road to Gombe lost control due to brake failure while approaching a gathering of Christian faithful on a procession to celebrate the Easter in Billiri town.

AGATU PEACE DEAL: SEPARATING FACT FROM FICTION

Should We Tell Adikwu That Apa Is Not Agatu LGA?

Morgan Adikwu's recent article, "FRESH KILLINGS IN APA: EJEH’s ‘PEACE AGREEMENT’ EXPOSED AS A SHAM," is not only amusing but also seriously misleading. A closer examination reveals that the article's allegations are unfounded, misleading, and a calculated attempt to discredit Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, and Hon. James Melvin Ejeh's efforts to improve security in the region.

We extend our condolences to Hon. Ejeh's counterpart from Apa LGA, His dear elder brother Hon. Adah Ochega and the people of Apa over the recent senseless attack. We urge the relevant security authorities to take decisive action to restore peace in Apa. However, we must correct Adikwu's intentional twist: the incident occurred in Apa local government, an autonomous, local government on its own, not Agatu. Furthermore, Hon. James Melvin Ejeh is not the chairman of Apa LGA but rather the chairman of Agatu LGA.

One can not help but wonder: If it's Ejeh's responsible for overseeing and securing the entire Idoma land? Why would Adikwu mention Agatu LGA boss's name in relation to an event in Apa or any other part of Idoma land? These calculated acts will not deter Governor Alia nor Hon. Ejeh, from performing their duties to protect the lives and properties of Benue and Agatu LGA citizens.

Is Morgan Adikwu and his cohorts implying that they have unilaterally amended the Nigerian Constitution to create a new Local Government Area called Apa Agatu or Zone C LGA, where Hon. Ejeh is somehow responsible for everything that happens? It's absurd, considering all elected chairmen are adults with their own agency and ideas.

What empirical does Morgan have to suggest that the Peace Initiative applies to all LGAs in Zone C, when in fact, it was specifically designed for Agatu LGA and it's yielding fruitful results?

As the chief security officer of Agatu LGA, Hon. Ejeh is focused on addressing the unique security challenges facing his constituents, without overstepping his bounds.

We urge Adikwu to pursue a legitimate career path rather than spreading falsehoods to earn crumbs from his paymasters for a living, hence the people sponsoring him in this unfortunate manner cannot use their children in same way and would eventually dump him(Adikwu) or keep calling him on falsehoods.

It is essential at this point to set the record straight: the peace initiatives in Agatu is a genuine effort to address long-standing conflicts between herdsmen and local communities. Ejeh's initiative promotes non-violent dialogue, understanding, and peaceful coexistence among parties involved. This peace initiative has deepened relative peace in the area, rendering Adikwu's claims baseless and fictitious.

Contrary to Adikwu's wishes and claims, the peace initiative in Agatu is not a "sham" or a "desperate ploy" to whitewash Fulani incursions. The process resulted from thorough consultations and negotiations with critical stakeholders, including all parties, local community leaders, and government officials. These individuals have demonstrated their commitment to peace and stability, and their endorsement of the peace roadmap was a genuine effort to support the process.

It is crucial to support and build upon this initiative rather than tearing it down. Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia and Agatu LGA chairman, Hon. James Melvin Ejeh is focused on development and can not be distracted by unseemly squabbles.

Akpabio Asks Colleague to Forgive Senator Natasha Over Conduct

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has pleaded with the Chairman of Senate Services, Sen. Steve Karimi, to forgive his colleague from Kogi State, Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, for her conduct on the floor of the Red Chamber.

A heated argument broke out in the Senate on Thursday after Senator Natasha protested the reallocation of her seat.

The incident began when Sen. Natasha, who represents Kogi Central, discovered her seat had been changed without prior notice. Upset by the change, she removed her name tag from the new seat and placed it back on her original seat. Her frustration grew louder as she accused the Chairman of Senate Services, Sen. Steve Karimi of Kogi West, of being behind the seat reallocation.

Sen. Karimi, visibly angered by the accusation, raised a “matter of privilege” on the Senate floor. He urged the Senate to refer the issue to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges for investigation, saying his rights as a senator had been violated by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public outburst.

“Earlier this morning before sitting, there was an uproar in the chamber over the change of seats,” Karimi explained. “The President of the Senate has the power to change seats at any time without prior notice. Sen. Samson Ekong was the first person who approached me regarding the change of seats, and I told him I wasn’t even aware.

“Before long, Sen. Natasha was shouting my name all over the place. I want to say that my privilege has been breached,” he added.

Karimi further expressed disappointment, reminding the Senate how the Kogi caucus had supported Akpoti-Uduaghan when she first joined the chamber.

“When she arrived here, we fought for her to ensure she got a chairmanship position. I don’t understand why the chamber should be turned upside down over seating arrangements. I want her to come out and apologize to us,” Karimi stated firmly.

Senate President Akpabio eventually intervened.

“I can see that you feel very hurt. You came under Order 10 of our rules. This is the Nigerian Senate. The matter, according to our rules, is to be referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges,” Akpabio said while addressing Karimi.

“I appeal that we do not go further. The matter will be dealt with at the appropriate time,” Akpabio added.

Rivers State Government Debunks Misinformation on Supreme Court Appeal Withdrawal

The Rivers State Government has firmly dismissed claims that Governor Siminalayi Fubara's legal team withdrew its Supreme Court appeal as a concession or acceptance of any unfavorable court ruling. The state government clarified that the withdrawal was a procedural decision made in light of evolving circumstances, rather than a defeat, contrary to misleading narratives being circulated by political commentator Lere Olayinka.

In an official statement, government sources explained that the appeal was withdrawn in line with Order 11, Rule 14 of the Supreme Court Rules, which allows for such action when a case has been overtaken by events. Given that the Rivers State budget and governance priorities have significantly progressed into 2025, the legal team deemed further litigation unnecessary.

"This decision is purely pragmatic. The budget has moved beyond the matters in question, making it unnecessary to continue pursuing the appeal," a senior government official stated. "Governor Fubara remains steadfast in his commitment to governance and development. Any suggestion that this withdrawal indicates a legal defeat is not only incorrect but deliberately misleading."

The Rivers State Government also criticized the spread of false information, warning against attempts to distort legal decisions for political gains.
"Misrepresenting this legal process to mislead the public is unprofessional and irresponsible," the statement emphasized. "Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara is focused on delivering good governance and ensuring Rivers State continues to set the pace in Nigerian politics."

Police Commences Investigation As Father Of Twins Takes Own Life In Lafia

A father of twins simply identified as Baba ThankGod has reportedly committed su!cide in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The incident according to a Facebook user, Christopher Francis occurred on Sunday February 02 in the Tudun Gwandara area of Lafia metropolis.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, also confirmed the unfortunate incident.

Mr. Nansel said the co**se was recovered and taken to the hospital where he was confirmed death.

“Investigation has commenced to determine the cause,” the police spokesman added.
