Never Underestimate the Man at the Gate...

In the bustling city of Arondale, the grandest building was the headquarters of Zenith Group, a company known for its wealth and power. Every morning, expensive cars drove in, carrying executives in fine suits. They walked past the same man every day—the gatekeeper.

His name was Mr. Obinna.

To many, Obinna was invisible. He wore the same old uniform, greeted people politely, and opened the gate with a smile. Some ignored him, some tossed him a casual nod, while a few muttered impatiently whenever he didn’t open fast enough. But Obinna never complained. He simply did his duty, watching and listening more than anyone realized.

Unknown to the staff, Obinna had once been a lecturer in economics before life’s misfortunes pushed him into hardship. He took the gate job out of necessity, not weakness. And though his clothes were faded, his mind remained sharp—sharper than many of the men in the glass offices upstairs.

One stormy morning, Zenith Group faced a crisis. Their accounts had been hacked, and millions were about to vanish. The board panicked. Meetings dragged on without solutions. Then, during lunch, a young manager who often stopped to chat with Obinna mentioned the problem while passing through the gate.

Obinna looked up calmly and said, “If you track the transactions through the subsidiary accounts in layers, you’ll see where the siphoning starts. Whoever set it up left a pattern. They always do.”

The young manager was stunned. “How do you know that?”

Obinna only smiled. “Let’s just say I’ve studied people and systems long enough.”

The manager took his advice back to the board. They tried it, and within hours, they uncovered the exact route the hackers were using. The company was saved from collapse.

The directors demanded to know who had given the insight. When they learned it was “the man at the gate,” silence filled the room. Shame settled on those who had walked past him daily without a glance.

Weeks later, Obinna was offered a role in the company’s strategic unit. Many could hardly believe that the quiet gatekeeper who had held the keys to their compound also held keys to wisdom and survival.

Today’s Thought:

“Sometimes, the people with the brightest smiles are the ones who’ve cried the most behind closed doors. Life teaches us lessons we didn’t ask for, but every sunrise is a new chance to rewrite your story.”

Nobody grew up with the intention of being a cleaner, shelf packer, cashier, security guard, taxi driver, or car cleaner.

They had big dreams, but life happened. Never disrespect a man because of the job that feeds him. greetings my people

Letter to myself:

Dear Me,

I know you’re tired.
Tired of trying to figure it all out.
Tired of feeling like you’re always behind, while everyone else seems to be racing ahead.
Tired of carrying questions that no one seems to have answers to.

You didn’t expect it to feel like this.
You thought by now, things would be clearer — that you'd have a firm grip on your future, love, career, happiness.
But instead, you wake up some days unsure of your place in the world, quietly battling a heaviness you don't always have the words for.

And that's okay.

It’s okay to be here, exactly where you are.
To not have everything figured out.
To feel confused, restless, even lost sometimes.
Because life was never meant to be a perfect, linear path.
And the pressure to “have it all together” by 30 is a lie generations have been sold.

What matters is that you keep waking up.
That you keep choosing to try, even when your heart feels heavy and your mind is clouded with doubt.
That you continue to look for small pockets of joy — in music, in conversations, in late-night laughter, in quiet mornings, in the simple things that remind you you’re still alive.

Please don’t be so hard on yourself.
Stop measuring your worth by timelines, job titles, relationship statuses, or comparisons.
Your journey is uniquely yours — no one else’s pace should determine your peace.

You are allowed to change paths.
To let go of what no longer serves you.
To start over as many times as you need.
You are not too old, too late, or too broken to begin again.

Remember:
You are loved.
You are needed.
You are still becoming.

One day, you’ll look back at this season and be proud you didn’t give up on yourself.

For now, breathe.
Take it one moment at a time.
And be gentle with yourself.

Love,
Me.

Many people hit their late 20s or early 30s and feel an overwhelming wave of confusion, loneliness, and quiet sadness. Society tends to push this narrative that by 30, you should have your career sorted, your finances stable, your relationships in order, and a clear sense of direction. But the truth is — for a lot of people, that’s not reality.

And what makes it heavier is that it’s not usually talked about. Everyone’s busy curating highlights for social media, making it look like they’ve "figured it out," while silently battling anxiety, doubt, and questions like:

“Am I running out of time?”

“What’s wrong with me?”

“Why does everyone seem ahead?”

“Did I waste my 20s?”

“Will it ever get better?”

This age comes with the weight of unrealized expectations and sometimes unresolved childhood wounds. Friendships shift, family pressures build, and you’re often caught between who you thought you’d be and who you actually are — and that gap can feel like a loss.

The depression at this stage often feels like:

Waking up with no motivation but pretending to function.

Comparing yourself to people you once grew up with.

Feeling stuck in jobs, situationships, or routines.

Doubting your purpose, even if you have a good job or relationship.

Not knowing who to talk to because you don’t want to sound like you’re complaining.

And the truth is, you’re not alone.

This season is more common than you realize. It’s just not loudly spoken about because it feels shameful to admit — but it's not.

If you're feeling this way, please know:

It’s okay not to have it all figured out.

Everyone’s timeline is different.

It’s never too late to pivot or begin again.

The people you think have it together often don’t.

And it helps to talk about it. Really talk. With a friend, a therapist, a support group, or even by writing it out. Because bottling it up makes it heavier.

📌 Side Effects of Cold Water/Drink on the Body

1️⃣ Digestive Issues

Cold water can constrict blood vessels in the stomach, slowing down digestion.

It may solidify fats in food, making it harder for the body to digest meals.

Some people experience stomach cramps or discomfort after drinking cold water, especially after a heavy meal.

2️⃣ Sore Throat & Nasal Congestion

Frequent intake of cold drinks can lead to irritation of the throat lining, causing a sore throat.

It may also trigger mucus production, leading to nasal congestion or a runny nose.

3️⃣ Exacerbates Migraine or Headache

In sensitive individuals, drinking very cold water can trigger headaches or brain freeze due to sudden nerve response in the roof of the mouth.

4️⃣ Worsening of Cold Symptoms

When you already have a cold, flu, or sore throat, cold drinks can sometimes worsen the symptoms or make it harder for the body to fight off infections.

5️⃣ Reduced Heart Rate

Extremely cold water can stimulate the vagus nerve (which controls heart rate), causing a temporary drop in heart rate — in rare cases, leading to faintness.

6️⃣ Negative Impact on Dental Health

Sudden exposure of teeth to cold drinks, especially for people with sensitive teeth or cavities, can cause sharp dental pain and worsen enamel damage over time.

7️⃣ Discomfort During Exercise

Drinking cold water during or immediately after intense exercise can cause stomach cramps and slow down rehydration.

📌 Important Clarification:

Cold water is not inherently harmful for healthy people when taken in moderation.

In fact, in hot weather or after workouts, cold water can help lower body temperature and rehydrate effectively.

The side effects are usually noticeable in individuals with underlying conditions, or when consumed excessively.

✅ Safer Practices:

Opt for cool or room temperature water when eating or when you’re sick.

Avoid very icy drinks if you’re prone to sore throats or migraines.

Sip water gradually during exercise rather than gulping large amounts.

Title: Ashes of Yesterday

The sun no longer rose the same way in Nkembe. What was once a lively town filled with the scent of roasted yams, the laughter of children, and the rhythms of evening drums had turned into a wasteland of ash and sorrow.

Adanna, a young mother of two, sat by the ruins of what used to be her home. Her eyes were dry — she had cried all the tears she could. The war had come like a thief in the night, sweeping away everything: homes, families, peace, and hope.

She remembered when the soldiers marched into town. Some wore the colors of their country, others of the rebellion. To the villagers, it didn’t matter who was right or wrong. Guns had no mercy, and bullets didn’t ask for loyalty. The market square, once bustling, was now a graveyard of broken stalls and bloodstained earth.

Children like little Somto and Adaobi, who used to chase chickens through narrow alleys, now spoke in whispers or not at all. Fear clung to them like a second skin. Men who once sang while they worked in the fields now carried the weight of loss in their empty stares.

Adanna had lost her husband, Ifeanyi, to a stray bullet as he tried to shield an old woman from harm. In war, heroes died silently, their names rarely remembered.

The war didn’t just destroy buildings — it shattered trust, turned neighbors into enemies, and turned fields of harvest into barren land. Hunger stalked the streets, and disease followed closely behind. The town's old healer, Mama Ebere, once known for curing fevers with herbs, now spent her days burying the dead with trembling hands.

One evening, as a pale sun dipped behind the hills, Adanna gathered the children and told them stories of the old days — of festivals with dancing masquerades, of rivers where girls braided each other's hair, and of nights under the stars without the sound of gunfire. It was all she could give them: memories of a time when peace was ordinary.

In the ashes of Nkembe, life struggled to begin again. But the scars of war ran deep, not just in the land but in the hearts of its people.

And though the guns would one day fall silent, the wounds they left behind would speak for generations. Say no to war...

Title: The Last Call

It was 11:47 PM when Sarah’s phone rang.

The unknown number blinked on the screen, and though every instinct in her screamed not to answer, curiosity got the better of her. She picked it up.

"Hello?"

A cold, rasping voice spoke.
"You shouldn't be alone tonight."

Sarah’s heart skipped a beat.
"Who is this?" she demanded, trying to sound braver than she felt.

But the line had already gone dead.
Sarah lived alone in a small one-bedroom apartment at the edge of town. The streets were quiet this time of night, save for the occasional howl of a distant dog. She tried to shake off the chill creeping up her spine and double-checked her door and window locks.

Maybe it was just a prank.

Maybe.

She decided to ignore it and headed to bed, leaving a small lamp on in the living room — just in case. Sleep didn’t come easy. Every tiny creak and groan of the old apartment seemed magnified in the silence.

At 12:23 AM, the phone rang again.

Same unknown number.

Her breath caught in her throat. This time, she let it ring. After the fifth ring, her voicemail picked up, and the caller left a message.
I'm inside." Sarah’s pulse thundered in her ears. She grabbed a kitchen knife and moved cautiously through the apartment. The windows were still latched. The door was bolted. There was no sign of forced entry.

She checked every room, even the tiny storage closet. Nothing. No one.

Was she losing her mind?

Then, she noticed it — the faint, muddy footprints leading from the balcony into her bedroom.

The balcony door was ajar.

It shouldn’t have been. She never left it open.

Hands trembling, she backed into the living room, clutching the knife tightly. She reached for her phone to call the police but it was gone.

A shadow moved behind her reflection in the window.

Too late. The next morning, Sarah's neighbor Mrs. Keller noticed the door to her apartment slightly open. She knocked but got no answer.

Inside, everything looked undisturbed. No signs of a struggle. No Sarah.

Just her phone, lying on the floor with a single new message notification.

It read:

I told her not to be alone.

The End.
