A massive sinkhole roughly 30m × 30m and over 15m deep opened at 7:00 a.m. today in front of Vajira Hospital, Bangkok, after soil collapsed into cracks in the Purple Line subway tunnel under construction.
Governor Chadchart says the collapse began when a critical joint in the shallower tunnel cracked, causing soil to flow into underground spaces and destabilize the road.
No casualties were reported. However, outpatient services at the hospital were suspended for 2 days, surrounding roads were sealed off, and construction in the affected area is halted.
