Under the new criminal law, prisoners and those awaiting sentences can work in agriculture, with one month of work translating to a three-month reduction in their sentence. Power generation hits 5,543MW as govt reveals new plans

The Federal Government plans to move most Nigerian electricity consumers to Band A, which will guarantee at least 20 hours of daily power supply. This announcement came after Nigeria set a new record for peak power generation at 5,543.20 megawatts on February 14, 2025, breaking the previous day’s record of 5,478.73MW. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) also reported a new high for daily energy distribution at 125,159.48MWH. These achievements show efforts to improve power generation and ensure better electricity distribution across the country.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, Olu Verheijen, explained that the government plans to meter all electricity consumers to track usage and improve cash flow for investments in the sector. The goal is to improve electricity reliability, especially for underserved communities, and help distribution companies make more infrastructure upgrades. Verheijen also mentioned that gas suppliers are struggling to get paid because of the power sector’s financial issues, which limits gas usage in other areas. She criticized the power sector’s privatization process, saying it did not ensure that investors had enough resources or expertise to improve power supply and infrastructure.
