*Federal Polytechnic Offa Unveils Nigeria’s First Homegrown Electric Vehicle, OKIN EV1*
The Federal Polytechnic, Offa, has unveiled Nigeria’s first locally developed electric vehicle, named *OKIN EV1*, in what is being described as a landmark achievement for the nation’s automotive and technology sectors.
The solar-powered electric car, which runs entirely on battery, can cover up to 125 kilometers on a full charge; roughly the distance between Offa and Ilorin. It also comes with modern features such as a touchscreen control display and a reverse camera for safety.
Speaking during the presentation, Director of the Directorate of Assembly, Fabrication, and Commercialization of Research Products, Engr. Dr. Olufemi Oluseye Kehinde, described the development as a “remarkable feat of engineering,” noting that the project was completed in less than six months despite challenges in sourcing materials.
According to him, the OKIN EV1 was designed not only to demonstrate the potential of Nigerian innovation but also to encourage sustainable energy use in transportation. He added that plans are underway to further refine the prototype ahead of mass production, which could make the vehicle more accessible to the public.
Kehinde also advised aspiring inventors to focus on building strong foundations in science and technology, adopt positive mindsets, and prioritize practical knowledge over quick financial gain.
The unveiling of the OKIN EV1 signals a new phase for Nigeria’s quest for homegrown technology solutions, with stakeholders hopeful that it will open fresh opportunities in renewable energy and eco-friendly mobility.
