FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Buhari
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London clinic. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The public holiday aligns with the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Tinubu to commemorate Buhari’s life and legacy. The Minister, in a statement released through the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, described the holiday as a mark of respect for Buhari’s dedicated service to Nigeria, both as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a democratically elected President (2015–2023).
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” Tunji-Ojo said. He urged Nigerians to use the day to reflect on Buhari’s contributions to the country’s democratic journey and to promote peace, patriotism, and national unity.
Buhari, who hailed from Daura, Katsina State, will be laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown, following Islamic rites. National flags will fly at half-mast across Nigeria and its foreign missions from July 13 to July 19, 2025, as part of the mourning period.
