From the Pulpit
Jesus is not God; he was a man whom some people mistakenly took to be God. The story of the fig tree provides clear evidence for this assertion.
In the story, Jesus was hungry and approached a fig tree, hoping to find fruit to satisfy his hunger. However, the tree was out of season and bore no fruit. Jesus then cursed the tree. From this account, we can observe the following points:
1. Jesus was hungry: God does not require food or sustenance.
2. Jesus ate food: This implies he also answered the call of nature. It is difficult to imagine a God who has bodily functions like humans.
3. Jesus did not know the tree’s season: This shows a lack of omniscience. God, however, is all-knowing.
4. Jesus cursed the tree: This act involved invoking a higher power. If Jesus were God, he would not need to curse the tree; he could have simply destroyed it directly.
This story highlights human attributes in Jesus, which are inconsistent with the nature of God.
