New Awujale: Abiodun Tasks Kingmakers to Ensure Level Playing Ground for Contestants

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has tasked the Awujale Chiefs in Council to ensure a level playing ground in the process of appointing a new Awujale of Ijebuland.

The stool of the Awujale became vacant when Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after reigning for over 65 years.

Speaking after a meeting with members of the Awujale Chiefs in Council at Iperu, Governor Abiodun noted that it is imperative for the people of Ijebuland to have a new Awujale as soon as possible, as "nature abhors a vacuum."

He assured the people of Ijebuland that his administration would support any candidate presented by the kingmakers at the end of the nomination process.

"Nature abhors a vacuum, and the process of installing another Awujale has started. That was also what we discussed.

"The pathway to having in place a regency is the pathway to ensuring that all the i's are dotted and t's crossed, and to ensure that all the processes which are enshrined in the Laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed.

"I must say that all of us agreed that we are on the same page, and I think this will put paid to all the rumours that have been agog about one thing or another," the governor stated.

Governor Abiodun expressed the hope that the process would be rancour-free, as those who would be lining up for the exalted position would be given equal opportunity.

He described members of the Awujale Council as respectable personalities who contributed to the successful reign of the late Awujale by maintaining peace in the land.

"I had to first of all wait for the 40 days to come and go before calling this meeting because all of us have been in mourning. I think what is most important is the fact that they are all deeply committed and dedicated chiefs of the Awujale, and I appreciate them.

"This is my first meeting with them to commiserate with them on the passing of our revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, and also to assure them that despite the rumours that have been ongoing, I have absolute confidence in them.

"The Council is intact, with no disharmony among them. There is no pluralization; they are all working hand in glove with each other, and I am happy with today's meeting, and I thank them," the governor concluded.

Also speaking, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, stressed the resolve of the Council to continue its peace-building duties, just as he assured that members would continue to unite and work as a team for the peace and progress of Ijebuland.

Court to Senator Daniel: Present Property Documents Within Two-week Period Ordered by Ogun Govt

The Ogun State High Court sitting in Sagamu on Tuesday directed former Governor Gbenga Daniel to present the necessary documents requested by the state government.

At the resumed hearing of Suit No: HCS/371/2025, Otunba Justus Gbenga Daniel and Anor vs the Governor of Ogun State and Others, Justice O. S. Oloyede directed Senator Daniel to present his papers to the government in line with the request made to him and other residents in the area.

O.T. Olaotan (Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice), who represents the government, alongside R.B. Kadiri (DCL), A.E. Odukoya, and W.A. Onawole informed the court that an interlocutory injunction and counter-affidavits have been filed in response to the motion by Daniel and served on the Claimants’ counsel.

The Counsel noted that the matter was not ripe for hearing and that the Court was also not inclined to take the application.

However, A.O. Kotoye (SAN), with O.T. Are and A.O. Adeniyi for the Claimants, applied for the Court to extend the interim Order earlier granted, which will automatically abate after seven days.

The Defence argued that the Court should order the Claimants/Applicants to take advantage of the two-week extension announced by the Government and furnish the Ministry of Physical Planning with the necessary documents, which others served with the same notices have been complying with.

Justice Oloyede thereafter asked the parties to maintain the status quo. He also urged the parties to explore settlement options.

He further directed the Claimants/Applicants to take advantage of the extension and furnish the relevant government agency with the necessary documents as requested by the government.

Counsel for the Claimants and Defendants both agreed that the matters be adjourned to 13th October 2025.

The Court consequently adjourned the matter to the date agreed by the parties for the hearing of the pending applications.

Abiodun Swears in Three New Judges, Tasks Judiciary on Fairness, Integrity

Governor Dapo Abiodun on Monday sworn in three new additional judges into the Ogun State judiciary with a charge that the people must see them as the hope for justice, the shield against oppression, and the assurance that right will always prevail over might.

The new judges are Mr. Julius Adebayo Ojikutu, who was formerly the Chief Registrar of the Ogun State High Court, Abeokuta; Mrs. Adejumoke Oluwatoyin Adewole, former Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development; and Mrs. Oluyemisi Oluwakemi Adebo, formerly the Secretary of the Ogun State Judicial Service Commission.

Governor Abiodun also urged the new judges to ensure that they make fairness, integrity, and justice their guiding light, adding that the country's democracy thrives because judges of conscience stand firm in defending the ethos of democratic institutions without fear or favour.

He further urged the new judges to let the fear of God, their conscience, and the Constitution of Nigeria guide their judgments, noting that the country requires judges who are not only learned in the law but also upright in character and resolute in conduct.

Governor Abiodun also charged them to be fair, firm, and courageous in the face of pressure and always place the interest of justice and the people above personal interests.

"This is not merely a legal obligation; it is a moral one, ensuring that justice is felt in tangible ways by every citizen regardless of tribe, religion, political affiliation, or economic status.

"You must therefore continue to uphold the sacred principles of the separation of powers, ensuring that the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary operate independently yet harmoniously, all within the constitutional framework for the good of the people.

"Let me restate that our government is a responsible and responsive administration that fully appreciates the role of the judiciary in nurturing democracy.

"I stand here today a grateful beneficiary of the courage, impartiality, and fidelity to the rule of law shown by our courts.

"We will continue to respect court judgments, support the judiciary with resources, and enhance the processes that guarantee swift and fair dispensation of justice," he said.

Gov Abiodun Welcomes Former PDP Chairman, Deputy Governorship Candidate, Others Into APC

Former governorship candidate of the Allied People's Movement (APM), who is also a deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade, on Wednesday, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Former chairman of the PDP in the state, Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele, a member representing Abeokuta South State Constituency 1 on the platform of the opposition party, Hon. Luqmon Atobatele, a former member of the House of Assembly, Hon. Idowu Olowofuja, a former chairman of the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Rotimi Rahaman; Dr. Mojeed Ekelojumati and thousands of their supporters also defected.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, while welcoming the defectors, assured them that they have been fully accepted back into the fold of the party.

"I want to assure you that we will accord you the rights, privileges, and respect that indeed you deserve," he said.

Governor Abiodun also described the PDP as an empty shell, as it has been experiencing gales of defection nationwide, noting that he was happy that Hon. Akinlade and others had left the sinking ship to join the progressive team of the APC.

The governor urged members of the APC from the 236 wards and the state working committee to accept and collaborate with the new members.

"Today, our brothers have come back home, and we are happy and rejoicing in it. We are happy to receive them back into the fold.

"The chairman of the party, a former House of Representatives member, former governorship candidate who came second in an election where I contested, former deputy governorship candidate, a serving member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Deputy Minority Leader, a former council chairman, former commissioner, former ALGON chairman—the list is endless. We are all here today happily receiving them.

"Hon. Akinlade said something: he said they didn't just come here to declare today; they have gone to their various wards, they declared at their respective wards, they have joined from bottom-up, not from top-down because they are seasoned politicians," he said.

In his remarks, Hon. Akinlade noted that they are fully back into the fold of the party to contribute their quota towards the development of the state and the country.

Akinlade added that their movement has not left anyone behind on their way to join the progressives in the state, acknowledging Governor Abiodun for accepting them and for also treating them with dignity.

"All I can say is to thank our leader, our amiable governor. What I have seen in the last couple of months is the dignity with which he received us; it takes only great men to be gracious in victory.

"Today, we are not decamping; this is a movement. We have moved en masse back home; we have left nobody behind because we believe in the leadership of our governor and the leadership of our party, both at the state and national levels.

"We are here to support you, Your Excellency. We are here to support the party; we are here to commit our loyalty to you and the party. We are here to work with you, Your Excellency," he said.

Also, Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele noted that their coming will bring positive results to the ruling party in the state.

The former state PDP chairman added that they have thought through their decision to join the APC after seeing the great works of Governor Abiodun in the state and that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the country.

"We, the responsible members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied People's Movement (APM), are progressively moving en masse into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

"What we are doing here today is a testimony; it is also history. I want to re-echo it: the most responsible PDP members of Ogun State from the 236 wards have moved en masse," he said.

Hon. Luqmon Atobatele commended Governor Abiodun for his leadership style, which he said recognizes everyone as a team.

"If you don't know Governor Dapo Abiodun very well, try and get to know him; as an Honourable member, what he has done for each member, no governor has ever done that before in the history of the state.

"Presently, I have done 88 surgeries free of charge for our people in my constituency.

"Around February, 40 medical doctors came from the United States of America. I wrote just a letter to Governor Dapo Abiodun; he gave me 40 rooms in a hotel, he provided vehicles and security.

"He is one of a kind who will do such for an Honourable member from another party; he has done very well for us in the Ogun State House of Assembly," he said.
