Umahi Declares: 2027 Presidency Not for the South-East Yet

The South-East zone should be patient in its pursuit of Nigeria's president, according to Works Minister David Umahi, who stated that it is not yet their turn to produce the nation's next leader. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja, Umahi made this claim.

Citing President Bola Tinubu's positive actions since taking office in 2023, he emphasized the need for political justice and continuity in 2027. "No, it isn't yet our time or the South-East's time.

Before 2023, the 17 Southern governors traveled to Asaba and made the statement that the next president should be from the South, regardless of any party affiliation.

"We all tried, but President Bola Tinubu was crowned. Since he is from the South, the Southeast shouldn't come and say, "Oh, it's their turn." No, Tinubu needs to complete the eight years.

We, the North and the South, are all affected by the eight years he took. He must so complete, and the southeast can now compete since they have never experienced the position before in 2031. Since they haven't experienced the position before, the North-East can also compete. I firmly believe that equity and rotation will become enjoyable if fairness and equity have been created.

No, it is not yet our time, nor is it the South-East's time. Before 2023, we, the 17 Southern governors, traveled to Asaba and told them that the next president should be from the South, regardless of their political affiliation.

Despite our best efforts, President Bola Tinubu was crowned. Since he is from the South, the Southeast shouldn't come and say, "Oh, it's their turn." No, Tinubu needs to complete the eight years. We, the North and the South, are all responsible for the eight years he took.

He must therefore complete, and the Southeast can now compete since they have never experienced the position before in 2031.

Therefore, in my opinion, now is not the right time (of the south-east). And we have sons and daughters who are highly qualified (to run for president) when the time comes," he added. Umahi asserts that some people are more qualified and superior to those who are currently demanding it.

However, the minister acknowledged that the southeast had previously experienced some degree of marginalization, which is why it was so challenging for certain governors, including himself, to secure the zone for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the general elections of 2023.

No member would hold the Senate hostage, says Akpabio

Nigeria's democracy depends on discipline and adherence to institutional rules, according to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who has stated that the National Assembly will not permit any of its members to take the legislative "hostage." This was said by Akpabio in a statement titled "The Trials and Triumphs of a Resilient Nigeria's 10th Senate," which was released on Saturday by his media assistant, Eseme Eyiboh.

He insisted that the Senate's dedication to upholding its standing orders was an essential step to protect order and the integrity of democratic institutions, not an effort to muzzle dissident views. Nigeria's Senate is unquestionably a member of the international association of parliaments that acknowledge order as the lifeblood of democracy and turmoil as the core of anarchy.

Therefore, its concentration on maintaining internal discipline and safeguarding its leadership's authority is neither punitive nor personal. It is the self-preservation of the institution.

Advertisements by The Senate's reluctance to be held hostage by any member, he continued, was a reminder that group duty is more important than "individual grandstanding." The chamber is reaffirming the importance of group responsibility over individual showmanship when it declares that it will not be held captive by the disruptive tendencies of any one member.

Strong legislatures survive by ensuring that disagreement adheres to procedural boundaries rather than by stifling it.

One universal indicator of political civilization is the rigor of parliamentary behavior. The Speaker's ultimate and uncontested authority in the UK's House of Commons guarantees that discussions are conducted with deference and accuracy. No member may publicly disregard the Speaker's decision without repercussions, regardless of their party or level of popularity.

Even the most ardent partisans in Canada's Parliament recognize the importance of following the rules. Decorum, not mayhem, is the way to handle heated arguments. Similar to this, in Australia, the Senate's power to hold the executive branch responsible is based on the strict observance of laws that maintain legislative integrity rather than the capriciousness of politics.

An empowered Kim Jong Un displays North Korea's latest hypersonic weapon, the ICBM, as its ruling party celebrates its 80th birthday.

North Korea celebrated the 80th anniversary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea with a military parade late Friday that included the demonstration of a new hypersonic glide vehicle and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). A variety of North Korean weapons were on display at the overnight showcase in Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang, including the Hwasong-11Ma hypersonic missile and the Hwasong-20 ICBM, which state media referred to as the country's "most powerful nuclear strategic weapons system."

The festivities took place one month after Kim Jong Un achieved a significant diplomatic triumph by going to Beijing for a huge Chinese military parade, where he had the unique opportunity to appear on the international scene with world leaders Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

Kim left the trip with stronger strategic relations, a fresh relationship with China, North Korea's longtime political and economic backer, and more motivation to advance his nuclear and missile programs. State media have reported about new or upgraded North Korean weaponry since that Beijing summit, including the Hwasong-20 and the Hwasong-11Ma, which features a maneuverable hypersonic warhead.

A week ago, the Hwasong-11Ma made its debut at a military exposition in Pyongyang. The short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) of the Hwasong-11 series are based on Russia's Iskander missiles, which Moscow has extensively used in its destructive assaults in Ukraine.

The new 11Ma variant seems to have been equipped by North Korea with a warhead carried in a boost glide vehicle, which is effectively a flattened and finned glider that allows the warhead to travel in an unpredictable path to its target, making it challenging for defensive missiles to strike and for defenders to detect. Because it can do these maneuvers while moving at more than five times the speed of sound, it is referred to as hypersonic. Hypersonic glide vehicles have been tested by the Kim dictatorship since at least September 2021.

However, a test conducted in January 2024 employed a solid-fueled booster rocket instead of the liquid-fueled ones utilized in previous tests. Solid-fueled rockets are more difficult to defend against because they can be transported more easily and fired faster in just a few minutes than liquid-fueled rockets.

Senator and Osun Assembly dispute over arrest, police closure of Amotekun base

The Amotekun Corps' headquarters, which were purportedly locked up by police officials looking into the Corps' involvement in the deaths of Akinlalu community members in the state, must be opened immediately, according to a demand made by the Osun State House of Assembly.

According to reports, members of the Intelligence Response Team from the office of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, closed down the operational bases of Osun Amotekun in Osogbo and Ife Central Local Government Area. Following public uproar over the murders of Akinlalu people by Amotekun operatives, the team was sent to the state.

According to the PUNCH, police in Osun State detained roughly 20 Amotekun members on Wednesday in relation to the murders that took place in Akinlalu on Tuesday of last week.

The Amotekun agents were taken into custody by the police squad at the Corps' Oke Fia, Osogbo Operational Base, and the Ife Central Division in Ile-Ife. Fausat Oyebamiji, a stepmother, described last Sunday how two siblings were shot dead by Osun Amotekun Corps members during a riot in the Akinlalu neighborhood on Tuesday.

It was also learned that the police had locked off Oke Fia Osogbo Base and Ife Central Area Command after apprehending the agents discovered on their grounds.

The Corps' State Headquarters, which is situated in Osogbo's Powerline neighborhood, was not sealed, though.

Yusuf Idowu, the spokesperson for Osun Amotekun, confirmed the arrests and stated that certain operatives were detained in relation to the Akinlalu incident. In response, the Osun State Police Command stated that only five Amotekun Corps members had been taken into custody.

The Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, was invited to explain his role in the killings, but he declined, according to a statement from the Command's spokeswoman, Abiodun Ojelabi, which stated that the Inspector General of Police had taken over the investigation.

He claimed to have been attacked by unidentified armed men wearing masks on social media on October 6, 2025, but preliminary investigation shows that this was a figment of his own imagination intended to hide the truth and thwart the victims' right to justice. Attempts to contact him via phone were unsuccessful because his phone was turned off.

Police investigations showed that the attackers were Amotekun Corps members, and that the attack was planned by certain people who the victims and witnesses claimed they might recognize if they saw them. Five people have been taken into custody in relation to the case thus far.

Burkina Faso opposes the United States' proposal to send migrants to their country.

Burkina Faso, which is governed by a Western-hostile dictatorship, has rejected one of President Donald Trump's signature immigration policies by refusing to accept those expelled from the United States.

Deporting people to third countries, frequently to countries they have no relationship to, has been a feature of Trump's administration's broad immigration crackdown since he returned to the White House.

In recent months, South Sudan, Ghana, Rwanda, and Eswatini have all welcomed individuals expelled from the United States. However, Burkina Faso's foreign affairs minister stated late Thursday that the West African nation had turned down Washington's advances.

Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore stated on national television that "this proposal, which we considered indecent at the time, runs completely contrary to the principle of dignity."

The US embassy in Ouagadougou, the country's capital, had just hours earlier declared that regular services for the majority of Burkina Faso visas would be suspended.

The capital of neighboring Togo, Lome, will now provide services to Burkinabe inhabitants. Is the purpose of this to exert pressure on us? Is this extortion? Whatever it is, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore stated, "Burkina Faso is a destination, not a place of expulsion, but a place of dignity." Captain Ibrahim Traore, the leader of Burkina Faso, describes himself as a Pan-African strongman who opposes imperialism.

He has cultivated deeper connections with Russia and avoided the wider West and old colonial ruler France since taking power in a coup in September 2022. AFP

CAF Boosts Nigeria’s World Cup Dream with New Qualification Twist

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) updated the qualifying guidelines when Eritrea withdrew from the competition, giving Nigeria a significant advantage in their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Group E now only contains five teams instead of six due to Eritrea's departure, creating a major imbalance. When choosing the top runners-up, CAF and FIFA are thinking about eliminating points won against the team that finished last in each group in order to preserve fairness.

In a March 14, 2025, circular signed by CAF's Director of Tournaments and Events, Samson Adamu, the organization clarified that results against the lowest-ranked or withdrawn teams will not be taken into account when comparing second-placed teams in cases where a group has fewer than five teams because of withdrawal or disqualification.

The change guarantees consistency in the selection of the four top runners-up throughout Africa and is done in accordance with Article 11.5 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 preliminary tournament regulations. Advertisements by Burkina Faso, DR Congo, Madagascar, and Gabon might all lose six points if the suggested change is implemented, changing the qualification table.

However, Nigeria and Cameroon (-4 points) might rise in the rankings and increase their chances of making it to the World Cup playoffs. Nigeria, who presently sit outside the top spot after only earning two points against bottom-place Zimbabwe, may find the adjustment to be critical.

The Super Eagles' prospects of qualifying have significantly increased because the new rule excluded performances against the teams with the lowest rankings.

Hamas opposes Trump's proposed "Board of Peace" for Gaza.

Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas leader, told Qatar-based television Al Araby on Thursday that the Palestinian militant organization opposes Donald Trump's idea of a temporary "Board of Peace" to supervise Gaza's governance, which would be led by the US president.

After indirect talks in Egypt, Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement on Thursday that would release hostages held in Gaza in return for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners detained in Israeli prisons. Trump's 20-point peace plan, which served as the foundation for the indirect talks, stipulates that Hamas must disarm and that a transitional government led by a Trump-appointed board will control post-war Gaza.

This is unacceptable to Palestinians. "This is rejected by all factions, including the Palestinian Authority," Hamdan said to Al Araby Television Network. Important issues about Gaza's future still need to be solved.

Mahmud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, has expressed his optimism that the Gaza agreement will result in the creation of an independent Palestinian state, despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his administration vowing to thwart such a development.

Trump's plan assigns daily management of public services to a temporary, apolitical, technocratic Palestinian group. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair will also serve on the supervisory "Board of Peace" committee, which Trump has stated he will chair.

According to Hamdans, "no one would accept a return to the era of mandates and colonialism."

Alleging a threat from the NURTW chairman, Rhodes-Vivour petitions the police

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the African Democratic Congress's candidate for governor of Lagos State, has petitioned the Lagos State Police Command regarding claims of intimidation and death threats made by Mustapha Adekunle, also known as Sego, the state's chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers. Inibehe Effiong, a human rights attorney, signed the October 8, 2025, appeal, which was sent to the Lagos State Command's Commissioner of Police.

Prior to the general elections in 2027, it charged Adekunle and other union members with threatening political opponents with violence. The lawsuit claims that Adekunle warned Lagos citizens not to support any political candidate who opposes President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming election in a widely shared video taken on September 25, 2025.

According to PUNCH Online, Sego had publicly denied making any inciting remarks prior to the petition, claiming that he also complied with a Department of State Services summons. Sego also maintained that his remarks were misunderstood and did not mean to pose a political threat to anyone. On behalf of Rhodes-Vivour and the ADC's Lagos leadership, Effiong wrote on Wednesday that Adekunle's comments were "chilling" and had the potential to incite violence, calling the actions "criminal intimidation and a threat to life."

Rhodes-Vivour, who ran for governor in 2023 as a candidate for the Labour Party, is anticipated to run again in 2027 under the ADC.

In a post on his X page on Wednesday, Rhodes-Vivour responded to the development by stating that the petition was submitted to document that his party had opted for legal methods to fend off intimidation.

"The ADC filed our plea against Mustapha Adekunle of the NURTW with the police earlier today. In order to prevent future accusations that we did not take civilized action against their violence and intimidation, we took this action for the sake of public record," he said. He charged that state-sponsored gangs were being employed by the All Progressives Congress-led government in Lagos to silence critics.

Banditry: The army sends a complete battalion to plunder the forests of Kwara

Since troops were already moving through the Oke Ode and Babanla communities in the Ifelodun local government area of Kwara, the Nigerian Army headquarters sent a full brigade and heavy equipment to various locations in the Kwara South district. Rafiu Ajakaye, the state governor, was informed on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) that the operation was also extending to the local governments of Edu and Patigi.

According to him, the goal was to search through dense woodlands where abductors have shamelessly attacked many settlements and taken hostages in exchange for ransom.

In addition to praising the President for his support and the military high command and allied security forces for their renewed intervention to eradicate all threats to public safety in the state, the CPS reported that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq had discussed the matter with President Bola Tinubu over the weekend while on the sidelines of the visit to Jos.

In a statement praising the army deployment on Wednesday, the governor declared, "We will not spare any resources in support of the military, DSS, police, and other security agencies as they work to strengthen security of lives and properties." As part of Operation Fasan Yanma, we are confident that this operation will eradicate all threats in the impacted areas of Kwara North and Kwara South.

Nigeria’s Inflation Target Unrealistic, Says World Bank

Nigeria is one of the few African nations still experiencing high consumer price inflation, according to the World Bank, which has criticized the Federal Government's goal of achieving single-digit inflation in the near future as unrealistic.

According to the Bank's most recent Africa's Pulse report, which was made public on Tuesday, double-digit inflation rates would persist in Nigeria through 2025, along with Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Sudan, Zambia, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Zimbabwe.

While 37 of Africa's 47 economies are expected to maintain single-digit inflation by 2026, Nigeria is still an anomaly, according to the report, because of ongoing structural issues like depreciating currency, high food and energy prices, and supply constraints that keep prices unstable.

The change goes against the forecast, undermining the Federal Government's hope that its recent monetary and fiscal reforms—such as the removal of fuel subsidies, the unification of the FX, and the tightening measures taken by the Central Bank—would swiftly reduce inflation to single digits.

Key government officials in the current administration, such as Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, and Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, have repeatedly reassured Nigerians that continued monetary and fiscal reforms will help lower inflation to single digits in the near future, according to the PUNCH.

A single-digit inflation rate is still the CBN's medium-term goal, Cardoso stated during the CBN Governor's Annual Lecture Series at the Lagos Business School, which was held in Lagos last week.

Some research organizations argue that the National Bureau of Statistics' statistics, which places the nation's headline inflation rate at 20.12%, overestimates the overall level of prices. This is the basis for the insistence.

In 2025, consumer price inflation has slowed in about 60% of Sub-Saharan African nations compared to the previous year. Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sudan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are the nine nations in this category that are still anticipated to have double-digit inflation rates.

Despite global economic challenges, the World Bank said Sub-Saharan Africa's economy is still strong, predicting regional growth to pick up speed from 3.5% in 2024 to 3.8% in 2025 and an average of 4.4% in 2026–2027.
