How to Reduce Poultry Feed Cost by 20%

Poultry farming is one of the most profitable agribusinesses in Nigeria, but feed accounts for about 60–70% of total production costs.

If you can reduce feed expenses without affecting bird health, your profit margins will increase significantly. With proper planning and smart management, it is possible to cut feed costs by up to 20%.

One effective strategy is formulating feed locally instead of relying entirely on commercial brands.

By working with a qualified animal nutritionist, you can combine maize, soybean meal, groundnut cake, and other locally available ingredients in the right proportions.

Buying these ingredients in bulk during harvest season, when prices are lower, also helps you reduce costs.

Another important step is reducing feed waste. Many farmers lose money due to poor feeding methods. If you use proper feeders, avoid overfilling, and adjusting feeder height to the birds’ level, you can prevent spillage. Regularly cleaning feeders also reduces contamination and wastage.

In addition, you can incorporate alternative feed ingredients such as cassava peels (properly processed), palm kernel cake, or maggot meal to partially replace expensive maize and soybean. These alternatives must be used carefully to maintain balanced nutrition.

Good farm management also plays a key role. Healthy birds convert feed more efficiently. Proper vaccination, clean water, and adequate housing reduce disease, which prevents poor feed conversion.

If you source smartly, minimize waste, and improve management practices, you can lower expenses and increase profitability without compromising bird performance.

3 Crops You Can Plant in March for Quick Profit

March marks the beginning of the rainy season in many parts of Nigeria, especially in the southern and Middle Belt regions.

This makes it one of the best months for farmers to plant fast-growing crops that can generate quick returns. With proper planning and market awareness, you as a farmer can take advantage of early rains and high demand.

Three profitable crops to consider are maize, vegetables, and okra.

First, maize is a strong option for March planting. It grows well with the early rains and matures within 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the variety.

Early maize often attracts higher market prices because it enters the market before the main harvest season.

Maize also has multiple markets — household consumption, poultry feed producers, and food processing companies.

Second, vegetables such as fluted pumpkin (ugu), spinach, and amaranthus mature very quickly, sometimes within 4 to 6 weeks.

These leafy vegetables are in constant demand in urban markets, restaurants, and homes.

Because they have short growing cycles, farmers can harvest multiple times from the same planting, ensuring steady income.

Third, okra is another fast-yielding crop suitable for March. It begins producing within 45 to 60 days and continues fruiting for several weeks if you properly manage it.

Okra is widely consumed across Nigeria, making it easy to sell in both rural and urban markets.

If you plant maize, vegetables, or okra early in the season, you can maximize rainfall, reduce irrigation costs, and earn quick profits.

Smart timing and good farm management are key to turning these crops into reliable income sources.

Would you try this? Comment YES or NO.
