Police arrest man who stole 9-month-old baby in Imo

The Operatives of Umuaka Police Divisional Headquarters in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo state Police Commander have arrested a suspect identified as Bebiana Paulinus, for stealing a 9-month-old baby girl in Amaiyi Umuaka on Wednesday, and disappeared with the baby.

The Operatives also recovered the abducted baby, who has since reunited with her mother, Precious Duru.

The suspect, who is a teacher at St. Saviour Catholic Secondary School Umuaka, was reportedly apprehended by operatives of the local vigilante, who later handed her over to the police.

An indigene of Umuaka Community and an ex-Nigerian Soldier, Rev Vincent Durugbo told some journalists that three suspects (an accomplice who accommodated the abductor and the baby) had so far been arrested and detained by the police, including the fleeing neighbour.

He said, “I have been following this case up since Wednesday when the poor woman announced her little baby’s disappearance. I didn’t want to report to the police because I have always believed they are compromised”.

He said that they collaborated with the men of Vigilante in Umuaka, who launched a vigorous search for the fleeing neighbour.

According to him, the woman is a teacher at St. Saviour’s Catholic Secondary School Umuaka, which we also visited during our search.

He said: “She has been arrested and detained at Umuaka police Division alongside two other suspects connected to the matter, and the baby recovered alive from her abductor.

The ex-Soldier, who said she hails from Ojukwu village in the Umuaka community, said they were witnesses to the evils that are happening in Umuaka and its environs, adding that the police are doing little or nothing to curtail the rising cases of child trafficking, and kidnapping, thuggery as other social vices.

He said: “I have also fallen victim to last Christmas celebration when I was rounded up by hoodlums and dispossessed of my belongings including a huge sum of money. My community has suddenly turned to a theatre of all manners of absurdities, yet those in authority have kept mum over this.”

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Umuaka, Martins Ekere, confirmed the arrest and promised to investigate into the matter.

HIV cases are rising among straight people. Advocates say a new strategy is needed
newsfinale.com

Key Points
Advocates say different strategies are needed to reach emerging at-risk groups.
HIV rates are growing fastest among heteros*xual men and women.
Those who are s*xually active are advised to seek a full s*xual health screen at least once a year.
When Jane Costello found out she had HIV, she was surprised.

As a heteros*xual woman in a monogamous relationship, she didn’t think she was at risk.

“If you had asked me if I was at risk of HIV back then I would have said no. And I think that’s what a lot of people still think today,” she told SBS News.

It was the early 1990s and the focus at that time for HIV outreach was gay and bis*xual men.

Her partner, who later became her husband, received a diagnosis that led her to get tested.

“It took a year-and-a-half for him to be diagnosed. Nobody thought to test him because at that time it was predominantly gay and bis*xual men who were diagnosed with HIV,” she said.

Costello is the CEO of Positive Life NSW, a group representing those living with HIV in the state.

The organisation works using a peer model where those living with HIV are supported by others with lived experience.

“So we’ve got a diverse range of people: young heteros*xual woman, heteros*xual men, people from culturally linguistically diverse backgrounds,” she said.

Her experience shows up in the latest annual data on HIV rates in Australia.

HIV transmission rising among wider population
Collected by the Kirby Institute at UNSW, the 2022 numbers show HIV case numbers are growing the fastest among heteros*xual women and men (30 per cent of cases), First Nations Australians, and those born overseas.

Gay and bis*xual men still account for the majority of the 555 new diagnoses of HIV in 2022, but over a 10-year period the case numbers have declined by 50 per cent.

Dr Skye McGregor from the Kirby Institute said the data revealed the need for prevention strategies targeted at all populations.

“These data suggest that, to eliminate HIV, there needs to be increasing focus on prevention strategies that encompass all populations, including heteros*xual men and women, particularly as we all begin to travel more following the relaxing of COVID-19 control measures,” she told SBS News.

“This includes safe s*x travel campaigns and regular s*xual health checks ups which include HIV testing.”

Australia moving closer to 2030 target
Darryl O’Donnell, the CEO of advocacy group Health Equity Matters, said in the last decade is praiseworthy.

“By global standards, and also within Australia’s history, these are the lowest (annual) numbers we’ve seen to date,” he said.

He said monitoring where transmission is growing will be key to achieving the 2030 goal set by UNAIDS to achieve a 90 per cent reduction in HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths compared to the 2010 baseline.

“So we are very excited and pleased to be tracking towards very low rates of HIV transmission. But this is an infectious disease, so you can’t stop working towards elimination until it’s over. If we stop our work, the epidemic will take off again.”

Increased access to HIV treatment key to reduced transmission
He says increased access to the prescription antiretroviral tablet medication PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) has been key to the success achieved in driving down cases over the last decade.

The treatment is subsidised by the government through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

Advocates have also been successful in helping to bring about a states and territories, which allows those without Medicare to access HIV treatment free of charge or at low cost through government-funded hospital pharmacies.

The announcement was made by the federal government on , with Australian states and territories completing the rollout of the scheme this year.

Costello, welcomed the increased access, saying it is critical to achieving the

“It will make a huge difference because we know that if people are on medication they can maintain an undetectable viral load and that’s really, really important [when it comes to ending HIV transmission].”

Stigma still a barrier
Costello says her own lived experience with HIV and the stories of others in the Positive Life network underline the importance of building trust and rapport with target populations.

She said any successful public health campaign would need to use imagery and language that reached the target audience.

“I see a lot of young women here and they say that even when they go into s*xual health clinics, all of the information on the walls and pamphlets don’t speak to them.”

Costello remembers being given the prognosis in the 1990s that she would only live for three years. With the development of HIV treatments, she has now been living with the disease for 29 years.

She said stigma still existed and that could impact the frequency with which people sought s*xual health screenings, as well as how quickly they got onto the medication.

“Something that we often hear from people who are newly diagnosed: I didn’t think I was at risk,” Costello said.

“Getting a health screening is about knowing what your health situation is. That empowers you to make really good decisions about your health outcomes and your health going forward.”

She said those who are s*xually active should be having a full s*xual health screen at least once a year. It’s recommended every three months for gay and bis*xual men.

What would a successful awareness campaign look like?
The organisation is about to launch a new health campaign featuring the slogan ‘can’t pass it on’, which is inspired by successful campaigns in countries like the UK and Canada.

“We work with prevention messaging. We certainly work around testing and treatment as well,” Costello said.

“But you’ve also got to factor in stigma and discrimination. I don’t think we’ve achieved a great deal in how HIV is seen in the wider population; and the stigma that still exists around getting a new HIV diagnosis.”

She said the that was broadcast on Australian television used fear as a tactic, which ended up further stigmatising those living with HIV.

Costello said effective messaging today would need to use more empowering language.

“If we’re talking about a broader conversation, we need to really talk about normalising, for want of a better expression, HIV. We need to talk about s*xual health as simply another way of looking after yourself and your own health,” she said.

“People need to be really proactive about s*xual health, but also about their health more broadly. If we can somehow incorporate s*xual health into an overall health and wellbeing approach, I think that would have better outcomes.”

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders another at-risk group
HIV diagnoses among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have increased over the past year, with 25 diagnoses in 2022.

Bundjalung man Robert Monaghan is the manager of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research at the Kirby Institute.

He said even though the total number was low, it was important to ensure it didn’t continue to rise.

“We need to get ahead of this. It could be very catastrophic if this gets out [spreads],” he told SBS News.

“Even though the numbers are low, it could be very dire in the Aboriginal community. Especially given the nature of Aboriginal people, living in very close to proximity to one another in remote communities; the testing facilities aren’t the same as in the metropolitan areas.”

Robert Monaghan looks at the camera.

Monaghan said efforts needed to focus on reaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the 16-29 age group.

“They tend to be less concerned about their health. We need to get to them early,” he said.

Monaghan said any public health messaging would need to reduce stigma, not add to it. He also dismissed the fear tactics used in the 1987 grim reaper ad.

“I think in 2023 we’ve moved on a lot from the grim reaper approach [and] scaring the living daylights out of people. We’re more accepting of people living with HIV. We’re more accepting of gender diversity. Services want to engage. But it is how to engage — that is the challenge.”

Confusion as APC NWC Members Reject Ganduje, Knock Tinubu
Photo of Nkem Eze Nkem EzeJuly 21, 2023 2 minutes read

There are indications that some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee have kicked against President Bola Tinubu’s reported choice of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje as the party’s substantive chairman.

NWC members who are at odds with the choice have knocked President Tinubu wondering why he decided to bring Ganduje into the APC leadership when he cannot accommodate the former governor in his cabinet.

APC’s deputy spokesman, Yekini Nabena, expressed reservations about the issue, noting that the emergence of the next national chairman would be decided by vote.

“Ganduje cannot just be made as the next substantive chairman. Of course, there has to be a mini-convention. If that’s what the president wants, he has to talk to the governors. He will be voted for at the national convention of they want him there,” Nabena told Punch.

“Definitely, his coming will divide the system (NWC) because if it is zoned to the North-Central, why take it out of the region? As I said before, and I am still saying it, you will spend all your time patching things if the foundation is wrong. And the house will keep getting cracks. Those are the cracks we are seeing.

“If you cannot accommodate somebody in your cabinet, why bring him into the party leadership? It will cause more problems. And if the party is not ready to work with you, they may decide not to call for a mini-convention. It is only the party chairman and secretary that have a right o call for a convention. Well, we are waiting for the appropriate time. As I said, once you get the foundation wrong, you will continue to fight to amend it.”

Some other NWC members who spoke on conditions of anonymity rejected the Progressives Governors Forum’s alleged decision to back Ganduje.

They insist that the office of the party’s national chairman has to be zoned to the North-Central geopolitical zone. Ganduje is from the North-West zone.

One of them said: “Our thinking is that some persons are trying to play Ganduje’s card into the mind of the president. The North-West should not be seen struggling for the party’s leadership after being compensated with the Speaker of House of Reps and Deputy Senate President. Why else should they be clamouring for the position of APC national chairman?”

BREAKING: DSS Reveals Suspended CBN Governor Emefiele is Allegedly Linked to IPOB
Photo of Daniel Daniel Daniel Daniel Follow on TwitterJuly 18, 2023 1 minute read

The Department of State Services (DSS) has suggested that Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has a connection with the separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the DSS made the suggestion in a tweet on Tuesday, in which it pointed out that Emefiele is being represented by the same lawyer as IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

“A Biafran Republic agitator and Outlawed IPOB counsel defending the suspended CBN Governor,” the DSS tweeted. “Is IPOB defending one of theirs???? What a contradiction…..hmmm…what’s the connection? Is someone telling us something? May Maxwell be properly educated on points of law, please.”

The DSS’s tweet comes after Emefiele was charged with illegal possession of fi****ms by the Nigerian government last week. Emefiele’s arrest and detention were nullified by a court earlier this month, but he was later charged with fi****ms offences.

Godwin Emefiele was appointed governor of the CBN in 2014.

He was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on 9th June 2023 and later arrested by the DSS.

Diphtheria: NCDC tells health workers to report cases within 24 hours

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has issued an urgent warning for all healthcare workers to report all suspected cases of diphtheria to their respective Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNO) within 24 hours.

The NCDC said diphtheria was one of the priority diseases in Nigeria requiring immediate reporting.

Ifedayo Adetifa, the director-general of the centre, said: “It is essential that you report all notifiable diseases to public health authorities in the state your institution is based in and specifically to the LGA DSNOs for the location of your facility. This is necessary for follow-up action at State and National level”.

Diphtheria is an infectious disease that manifests as sore throat and fever and spreads quickly through cough and sneezing, NCDC says.

In severe cases, the bacteria produce a poison (toxin) that causes a thick grey or white patch at the back of the throat.

This can block the airway making it hard to breathe or swallow and also create a barking cough. The neck may swell in part due to enlarged lymph nodes.

The poison may also get into the bloodstream causing complications that may include inflammation and damage of the heart muscle, inflammation of nerves, kidney problems, and bleeding problems due to low blood platelets.

The infection is treated with the administration of a diphtheria antitoxin, administered through injection. Antibiotics are also given to eliminate bacteria and toxin production and to prevent transmission to others.

The WHO prescribes that immunisation programmes should ensure that three booster doses of diphtheria vaccines are provided during childhood and adolescence as recent outbreaks in several countries show inadequate vaccination coverage.

A hexavalent vaccine that would require fewer vaccination sessions, allowing more children to receive all the recommended doses for protection against diseases such as diphtheria is also being developed.

UNICEF expects WHO prequalification of the first whole-cell pertussis hexavalent vaccine during the third quarter of 2023.

Data from the WHO show that 557 confirmed cases of diphtheria have been detected in Nigeria as of April 2023, affecting 21 of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

In December 2022, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) was notified of suspected diphtheria outbreaks in Kano and Lagos States.

From 14 May 2022 to 9 April 2023, 1439 suspected cases were reported, with 557 (39 percent) confirmed, including 73 deaths among the confirmed cases.

Nigeria had previously reported diphtheria outbreaks, with the most significant reported in 2011 affecting the rural areas of Borno State, in the country’s northeast.

METROLady, boyfriend nabbed for dumping infant in dustbinPublished on July 14, 2023By Jim Ochetenwu

A young woman in Adamawa State, Blessing Ben, accused of killing and dumping the body of her newborn in a dustbin has been arrested.

20-year-old Blessing was arrested along with her boyfriend, Luka Iliyasu by operatives of the Adamawa State Police Command who are now grilling the suspects.

Facts on the matter obtained by DAILY POST on Friday morning indicate that Blessing was made pregnant by Luka, incidentally of Police Barracks, Yola.

They had been dating for about two years.

Blessing, a resident of Jambutu, within the same Yola North LGA as Luka, was delivered of her baby last Saturday, July 8.

She allegedly killed the infant and dumped the remains in a dustbin in their compound.

She has however denied killing the baby, insisting that she delivered the baby on her own and the baby came out lifeless, giving her no option but to throw the lifeless child into a dustbin.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, the woman claimed that she has been living with her aunt, and that even her aunt did not know that she was pregnant for nine months until she gave birth.

She narrated that her aunt was out of town at the time she was delivered of the baby, saying that when she discovered that she gave birth to a dead baby, she kept the co**se for two days after which she dumped the remains inside a dustbin.

Nguroje said the police would get the full story as both Blessing and her boyfriend were in police custody and were still being investigated.

I sent $80K to my millionaire boyfriend I?ve never met but I believe he

An elderly American woman known as Terri has revealed she sent nearly $80,000 to her virtual boyfriend before she realized that her relationship may not be what it seemed.

Speaking as a guest on “Dr. Phil,” program, Terri revealed she met her man “Ricardo” on Facebook Messenger two years ago.

A month after they started talking, Ricardo asked Terri to invest $10,000 in Bitcoin, promising a speedy return of $1 million in six months.

Terri has been sending Ricardo money ever since, with only photos and phone calls to prove that her internet boyfriend exists — but she’s never gotten a return from her investments.

Ricardo claimed to be a U.S. citizen from Los Angeles, but says his relocation to Canada for work allegedly prevented him from meeting his lady love in person.

Whenever Terri tried to make arrangements to meet in person, she told Dr. Phil, Ricardo “always had an excuse.”

Terri’s sister, Tammy, felt she was being scammed and went with Terri on the show.

“People are still telling me that Ricardo isn’t real, that he’s scamming me and that he’s not in Canada,” Terri lamented.

“I don’t believe them … I believe Ricardo’s real.”

Dr. Phil agreed with Tammy’s skepticism and exposed “Ricardo” as a scam by fact-checking the story he fed Terri.

The man who really appeared in the photos Ricardo sent to Terri is named James — and this isn’t the first time his likeness has been stolen.

According to James, the photos are taken from his social media and “used for romance scams.”

“I’ve been dealing with this for over 10 years,” James said in a video sent to the “Dr. Phil” show. “I hope this video can show that I am the person in the photos, but I am not the person that Terri has been talking to and sending money to.”

While Terri was devastated to discover that her lover wasn’t real, she vowed to block the scammer and get a new phone number.

“I’m heartbroken,” Terri said to Dr. Phil, “but I’m done.”

Even though she was sad, Terri was able to joke about the situation and say that she didn’t blame James at all.

“If I see [James],” she said, “I won’t punch him out.”

Fake bank staff swindles woman of her entire life savings inside the banking hall
A woman has recently shared a distressing account on her social media platform, recounting how her mother fell victim to a scam artist who pretended to be a bank employee at a prominent Nigerian bank.

According to her, the mother contacted her immediately after the devastating incident, leaving her overwhelmed with guilt as she, being the eldest child, was unable to provide immediate assistance to her mother during this crisis.

Her statement “Four days ago, I received news that turned my entire world upside down. My mum called me, crying uncontrollably and talking gibberish.”

“That in itself was so strange because my mum rarely cries. When I managed to calm her down a bit, everything stolen from her by the men in the pictures below. My mummy was bawling like a baby and nothing I was saying was getting through to her.”

“She was talking incoherently and in that moment I was truly afraid that she was going to go bonkers. I tried encouraging her, telling her that money was transient and could always be made back.”

“I’m not sure I got through to her at all. I ended the call and began to rack my brain thoroughly, uppermost in my mind.”

“What can I do to fix this? I felt responsible. I am a first child, I should be able to fix this, to wipe these tears off my mother’s face. But there was nothing I could do for her. I, a recent graduate, trying to find my feet in the world, where would I get millions to replace what she’d lost?”

“I did the only thing that makes sense to me in chaos, I turned to Abba. I opened my mouth and nothing came out tears just kept rolling down my face, where would we begin?”

“But then, I did something I learnt through tribulations. I gave thanks to the giver of all things. I sincerely gave thanks through the tears and pain. God gave, and he can give again.”

“And I prayed for peace and consolation for my mum. This was the most important thing at the moment. And God did give her peace and calm in the eye of the storm. My mom who was talking incoherently for straight two days is calm now and we’re trusting God for the best.”

“I have a plea though. I know it’s a long shot and that the pictures aren’t very clear, but we’re trying to find these men. Even if we can’t recover what they stole, they need to pay for their crimes. Someone you know might know them so please.”

“Ps: if you’re dating a fraudster, are friends with a fraudster, defend a fraudster, or make excuses for them; I hope you know that this is the pain and desolation that they wreck on lives and entire families.”

“It’s Access bank please. She uses both banks and I mixed it up. It was an honest mistake that I didn’t notice on time.”
