*NIGERIA INSTITUTE OF SOIL SCIENCE (NISS) IN COLLABORATION WITH INDORAMA FERTILIZERS AND CHEMICALS LIMITED COMMIT TO TRAIN 460 FARMERS.^*
The Global Soil Doctors Programme is a farmer-to -farmer training initiative under the framework of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) Global Soil Partnership (GSP). In Nigeria, the programme commenced on 18th November, 2024 with the training of Lead farmers from Indorama Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd as Soil Doctors. The GSP made available soil kits and branded materials for the training. The GSP also trained 5 NISS Soil experts who are now official trainers of the Soil Doctor programme.
The Soil Doctor training was conducted by the Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS) in collaboration with, Indorama Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd. NISS, as a governmental Agency played the role of National Promoter while Indorama as a Private sector played the role of local promoter. The promoter acts as a bridge between FAO and the Soil Doctors. Indorama was the sole financier of the Programme offering a huge support that enabled the implementation of the programme in the country.
The training commenced on the 2nd December 2024 at the Department of Soil Science Conference Room, Faculty of Agriculture, Bayero University Kano (BUK) New Site and lasted till 6th December, 2024. The programme produced a total of Sixteen trained Soil Doctors.
The next outreach of the training to be provided by the Soil Doctors will be commencing in due course and will be monitored by the Promoter (NISS) in the coming months along with the GSP. Each Soil Doctor will be engaged to train 10 farmers. This next phase of training will give rise to a total of 460 farmers and will also result to the certification of Soil Doctors by NISS.
