*Facts about Rubella*
Rubella is caused by a virus.
It is spread by coughing, sneezing, crying and through contact with body secretions
Rubella is a mild disease in children and adults presenting with cough, catarrh, red eyes, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes and a rash ( looks like measles rash) that disappears within 3 days.
Rubella in a pregnant woman(especially in the first 3months) is a disaster. It causes miscarriage. If the pregnancy survives it causes congenital rubella syndrome in which the baby is born blind, deaf, with congenital heart disease and mental retardation.
There is no cure for rubella.
Prevention is the key and this is by vaccination.
Please allow your children aged 9 months to 14 years( both boys and girls) to receive the MEASLES RUBELLA VACCINE that is currently being given in schools, churches, mosques and health centres.
