JUST IN: Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), says bandits and kidnappers who openly share videos and boast about their activities online can be tracked if security agencies fully deploy their operational capacity.

Speaking on TVC, he said he does not believe claims that criminals cannot be located, adding that authorities have the tools needed if properly utilised.

“I don’t think they failed to locate. If they can locate ordinary citizens or social media influencers, I don’t believe they can locate these bandits,” he said.

Buratai called for stronger capacity building, increased recruitment, continuous training, and improved welfare for security personnel to enhance national security operations.

He also noted that Nigeria already has specialised units such as the Special Boat Service and Army Special Forces trained for rescue missions, but stressed that hostage situations require careful handling to avoid collateral damage.

He further recommended expanding the National Counter Terrorism Centre to include state-level branches with improved technology and coordination to strengthen the fight against kidnapping and terrorism.
