What does it do?
It helps break down dipeptides (small protein fragments), particularly:
-Glutathione-related compounds
-Certain drug metabolites
So basically, it plays a role in:
Protein metabolism
Detoxification processes in the kidney
Why is it clinically important?
1. Drug metabolism (very important 💊)
DHP1 is involved in breaking down some antibiotics, especially:
Imipenem
Without control, DHP1 rapidly destroys imipenem in the kidney, making it ineffective and potentially harmful to the kidneys.
That’s why imipenem is always given with:
Cilastatin
Cilastatin blocks DHP1, allowing imipenem to:
-Last longer in the body
-Work effectively
-Reduce kidney toxicity
2. Kidney function
Since DHP1 is abundant in the kidney:
It contributes to renal handling of peptides and drugs.
It plays a role in protecting the body from toxic metabolites.
