*PRESS RELEASE*

The attention of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has been drawn to a fabricated report circulating on social media, alleging that the House is set to pass a bill criminalizing sexual relationships with married men.

The report, attributed to a Facebook post by Obiavel Albert Abigo, claims the bill is sponsored by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, and imposes a 10-year prison sentence on women found guilty of engaging in sexual relationship with married men, while men would face a ₦2 million fine.

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly wishes to categorically state that this report is entirely false and has no basis in fact. The Assembly has not received or considered any such bill, and the Deputy Governor has not sponsored it.

We condemn this malicious attempt to tarnish the image of the Deputy Governor and the Assembly, and urge the public to disregard this fake news and any associated commentaries.

The House remains committed to its constitutional role of law-making, and will not be swayed by mischievous attempts to undermine its integrity.

STATEHOUSE STATEMENT

PRESIDENT TINUBU DECLARES A SECURITY EMERGENCY, ORDERS ARMY, POLICE TO RECRUIT MORE PERSONNEL

Today, in view of the emerging security situation, I have decided to declare a nationwide security emergency and order additional recruitment into the Armed Forces.

By this declaration, the police and the army are authorised to recruit more personnel. The police will recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the total to 50,000.

Although I had previously approved the nationwide upgrade of police training facilities, the police authorities are, by this statement, authorised to use various National Youth Service Corps camps as training depots.

The officers being withdrawn from VIP guard duties should undergo crash training to debrief them and deliver more efficient police services when deployed to security-challenged areas of the country.

The DSS also has my authority to immediately deploy all the forest guards already trained to flush out the terrorists and bandits lurking in our forests. The agency also has my directive to recruit more men to man the forests. There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil.

My fellow Nigerians, this is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground, especially in security-challenged areas. The times require all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we should all get involved in securing our nation.

Let me take this moment to commend our security agencies for working together to secure the release of the 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and the 38 worshippers in Kwara State. We will continue to sustain the efforts to rescue the remaining students of Catholic School in Niger State and other Nigerians still being held hostage.

To the leadership and rank and file of our Armed Forces, I commend your courage and your sacrifice. This is a challenging moment for our nation and for the military institution itself. I charge you to remain resolute, to restore peace across all theatres of operation, and to uphold the highest standards of discipline and integrity. There must be no compromise, no collusion, and no negligence. The Nigerian people are counting on you, and this administration will provide the support you need to succeed.

In addition, our administration will support state governments which have set up security outfits to safeguard their people from the terrorists bent on disrupting our national peace.

I call on the National Assembly to begin reviewing our laws to allow states that require state police to establish them.
States should rethink establishing boarding schools in remote areas without adequate security. Mosques and churches should constantly seek police and other security protection when they gather for prayers, especially in vulnerable areas.

Our administration created the Livestock Ministry to address the persistent clashes between herders and farmers. I call on all herder associations to take advantage of it, end open grazing and surrender illegal weapons. Ranching is now the path forward for sustainable livestock farming and national harmony. The Federal Government, in collaboration with the states, will work with you to solve this problem, once and for all.

I sympathise with the families who have lost their loved ones in recent attacks on soft targets in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe, and Kwara States. I also pay tribute to our brave soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba.

Those who want to test our resolve should never mistake our restraint for weakness. This administration has the courage and determination to keep the country safe and ensure our citizens live in peace.

Fellow Compatriots, I urge you not to give in to fear and never succumb to despair. Let's stand together in purpose and strength to defend our freedom and values. Our administration will continue to guarantee peaceful co-existence and preserve our union. I urge all Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant. Report suspicious activities. Cooperate with security agencies. We are in this fight together, and together we shall win.

May God continue to bless Nigeria and keep our armed forces safe.

Court Convicts Nnamdi Kanu On Multiple Terrorism Charges

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has convicted the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on three out of the seven terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, held that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to establish Kanu’s involvement in acts deemed to constitute terrorism under Nigerian law.

The Court relied heavily on video recordings tendered by the prosecution, in which Kanu was seen issuing violent threats against Nigeria and its citizens.

Justice Omotosho ruled that these broadcasts were not mere political rhetoric, but deliberate incitements intended to provoke unrest and bloodshed.

Kanu was found guilty on counts one and two, which bordered on making a series of broadcasts aimed at inciting violence and killings in furtherance of his separatist campaign for an independent Biafra.

The court held that the threats, including directives for sit-at-home orders in the South East, amounted to acts of terrorism due to their destabilising effects on public safety.

Justice Omotosho also convicted Kanu on counts four and five, which accused him of inciting violence during the protests.

The judge held that Kanu’s statements contributed to attacks that led to the deaths of security personnel and the destruction of government infrastructure in Lagos.

The remaining charges are expected to be addressed as the matter proceeds to the sentencing phase.

AKHA APPROVES 2026–2028 MTEF/FSP

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has approved the 2026–2028 Medium Term Expenditure Framework/Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), giving the green light to the Executive to present the estimates of the 2026 budget to the Legislature.

The approval followed the adoption of the findings and recommendations of the report of the Committee on Economic Planning and Development presented at plenary, on Tuesday, by the Chairman, Dr. Nsidibe Akata.

The report was received through a motion by the House Leader, Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob, seconded by the Deputy Leader, Dr. Nsidibe Akata.

Governor Umo Eno had forwarded the proposed MTEF/FSP document to the House on Thursday, August 7th, 2025.

At the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, the House approved N1.650 trillion budget size for 2026 fiscal year both for revenue and capital.

The report reads partly, “That budget allocation should be given priority to social sector (i.e Education and Health Sub-sectors) and rural infrastructure development.

“That Capital Expenditure Ratio versus Recurrent Expenditure be adjusted to 60:40 to justify provision for personnel, new recruitment, pension and gratuity arrears”.

From the 2026–2028 MTEF document, the committee noted that the document sought to provide a backward looking summary of key economic and fiscal trends that will affect the public expenditure in the future economic and fiscal update.

It also noted that the document set out Medium Term Fiscal Object and Targets, including Tax Policy, Revenue Mobilization, Level of Public Expenditure, Deficit Financing, and Public Debt-Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) and Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), while providing indicative sector envelopes for the period 2026–2028, which constitute the Budget Policy Statement (BPS).

According to the 2026–2028 MTEF/FSP document sent to the House, the committee observed that the total revenue projection for 2026 fiscal year is N1.650 trillion which comprises of an opening ballance of N257.1 billion, recurrent revenue (N1.365 trillion), capital receipt (N17.5 billion), and external loan of N10 billion.

Responding, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder ) Udeme Otong, directed the Clerk to communicate the House’s approval to Governor Umo Eno for action.
Meanwhile, plenary has been adjourned to reconvene on Tuesday, 18th November 2025 at 10 a.m

NUC APPROVES ACCREDITATION OF LAW FACULTY IN AKSU

National Universities Commission, NUC, has approved the commencement of Faculty of Law at Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

The approval, conveyed in a letter dated today, November 10, 2025, and signed by the Acting Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, followed a successful resource verification visit to assess the University’s readiness in terms of human and material resources.

According to the NUC, the full-time Bachelor of Laws, LL.B, programme will take off at the University’s Main Campus beginning from the 2025/2026 academic session.

The Commission, however, clarified that the approval covers only the full-time mode of study, adding that any request for a part-time version must be separately considered.

It also urged the University to ensure adequate staffing and facilities in line with the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards of the Nigerian University System.

The establishment of the Faculty of Law marks another milestone for the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Otoabasi Akpan, who, within three months in office, has facilitated the creation of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, with six new departments, and the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, with five departments.

He has also driven the accreditation and resource verification of over 30 postgraduate and undergraduate programmes, alongside the establishment of more than 30 institutes and centres aimed at boosting research and attracting funding.

The approval of the Law Faculty brings the number of faculties in Akwa Ibom State University to 11, with the new faculty expected to host three departments: Private and Property Law, Jurisprudence and International Law, and Commercial and Industrial Law.

With this development, Akwa Ibom State University now joins the list of state-owned universities in Nigeria authorized to offer Law as a degree programme, a major stride in its academic expansion and commitment to excellence.
