Medical Laboratory Science: Things Nobody Tells You Before You Study It
Medical Laboratory Science looks attractive from the outside — white coats, laboratories, hospital environment.
But there are important truths many people don’t tell you before you choose this course.
If you’re an aspirant or student, read this carefully 👇
1️⃣ You Will Rarely Be in the Spotlight
Medical Lab Scientists work mostly behind the scenes.
Patients may never know your name
Doctors and nurses often get the recognition
Yet, most medical decisions depend on your results
👉 If you need constant praise or visibility, this course may frustrate you.
👉 If you value impact over applause, you’ll fit in.
2️⃣ The Course Is Heavy and Very Practical
MLS is not “read and pass”.
Long practical sessions
Microscopy, calculations, specimen handling
Strict lab rules and safety protocols
Missing practicals or cutting corners will affect you later — especially during internship.
👉 This course rewards hands-on learners, not shortcuts.
3️⃣ Accuracy Matters More Than Speed
In the lab:
A small mistake can change a diagnosis
Wrong results can harm patients
You are trained to be:
Careful
Patient
Detail-oriented
👉 If you dislike precision or get impatient easily, MLS will challenge you.
4️⃣ You’ll Handle Things Not Everyone Can Handle
Nobody tells you this early enough.
You will work with:
Blood
Urine
Stool
Sputum
Infected samples
If you are extremely squeamish, the adjustment may be difficult — but many students adapt with time.
5️⃣ The Training Is Long — Very Long
From admission to full practice:
5 years in school
1 year internship
NYSC
Licensing
It requires patience and mental strength.
👉 MLS is not a “quick money” course.
6️⃣ Your Attitude Can Make or Break Your Career
Skills matter, but character matters more.
Laziness during internship follows you
Arrogance closes doors
Humility opens opportunities
Many jobs come through recommendations, not just certificates.
