The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed why it withheld the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results of 170,146 candidates that sat for the 2021 examination.

The management of the examination board who made this known in a statement issued on Monday said that the results of 170,146 candidates, representing 10.9 per cent of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

The Head, Nigeria National Office, Mr Patrick Areghan while announcing the release of the 2021 WASSCE result said the increasing use of cell phones in the examination hall and organised cheating in some schools are other big concerns are the major reason for their move.

Areghan complained about the activities of rogue-website operators and some other social media platforms, who always post-examination questions online immediately after the commencement of the paper being administered.

“The results of 170,146 candidates, representing 10.9 per cent of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

“The increasing use of cell phones in the examination hall and organised cheating in some schools are other big concerns. All the cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council for determination in due course,” he said.

Areghan, however, announced that about 81.7 per cent amounting to 1, 274,784 million candidates made credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics in the just concluded examination.

He explained that there was an appreciable 16.46 per cent improvement, saying the percentage of candidates in the category in the WASSCE for school candidates, 2020 was 65.24 per cent.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has dismissed suggestions he is under fire after his side slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.

Solskjaer came into the game under pressure and the situation intensified after the result.

However, the tactician insisted that he does not believe the sack is coming.

When asked by BBC Sport if he thinks he is on borrowed time, he said: “No I don’t.”

“I have good communication with the club all the time which is upfront and honest.

“I work for Man United, I want the best for Man United. As long as I am here I want to improve this.”

“They played well, they don’t give you opportunities to win the ball off them, so praise to them but our standards need to be raised.

“At the moment we are [far off the top teams]. The demands on me and the players are going to be high and we have to get back to what we started to look like. We have the players to do that.”

United’s next game comes against Watford after the international break, giving the team two weeks to make a decision on Solskjaer’s future.

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent warm felicitations to former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon on his 87th birthday.

He said he rejoices with the leader and his family on the grace for good health and strength to keep serving.

Buhari also congratulated Gen. Yakubu on the formidable role he continues to play in the development of the country, always advocating peace and unity, and consistently remaining a voice of reason and wisdom in good governance and democracy.

As the former Head of State turns 87, the President notes, with commendation and gratitude, the statesmanship of the Convener and National Chairman of “Nigeria Prays’’, whose vision for a greater country resonates in the programmes he instituted in the 70’s like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), creation of states and the Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation project, which has turned a reference for harmony.

The President said he believes that grace and fortune continue to guide Gen. Gowon, starting out as a career soldier, youngest military Chief of Staff and youngest Head of State, before turning a Professor of Political Science and founder of the Yakubu Gowon Centre, an organization that continues to support issues of good governance, infectious disease control, HIV/AIDS and malaria.

He, therefore, joined family, friends and Nigerians in praying for a longer life for the visionary leader.

MY APOLOGY!!!

A Nollywood actress, Chioma Ifemeludike, has asked Tiwa Savage to apologise to her fans for the release of a s*x tape that allegedly involves her.

Recall that two weeks ago, Tiwa Savage stated during an interview with Angie Martinez of Power 105.1 that she was being blackmailed by an unknown person who threatened to release a s*x tape that featured her and her current lover.

The singer stated that she has decided not to pay a penny.

On Monday night, a s*x tape leaked online, while the face of the man involved in it did not show, the lady’s did and it bears a close resemblance with Tiwa Savage.

The short clip has since gone viral, sparking many reactions including blames cast on the singer.

Taking to her Instagram page, Ifemeludike condemned the act.

She said, “Even though I find this supposed ‘s*x tape drama’ as a huge distraction, I haven’t seen the video and I have no care in the world what an adult does with her personal life but my people, bad thing na bad thing, especially if it’s coming from a person young people look up to.

“You may want to defend this disgusting trend by saying ‘she didn’t release it bla bla bla’ but in a normal society, I’d expect the person in question to expose whoever is behind this act, for accountability and persecution.

“She needs to publicly admit her carelessness and apologise to her fans. We can’t keep saluting immoral behaviours while our young daughters watch.

“She’s been also accused of intentionally allowing this video to flood the internet space at the same time her latest music video is launched.

“These are all speculations. I don’t believe them but Tiwatope Savage Balogun must clear the air for posterity and our growing daughters! S*x is a sacred gift given to humans to enjoy in matrimony by God.”

The actress also stated that people are hailing ‘evil’ because it involves Tiwa Savage, saying that such people are hypocrites.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the admission by President Muhammadu Buhari in his Independence Anniversary speech that Nigerians have faced difficulties that are similar to the situation of the civil war under his administration vindicates its stand that his government is incompetent, confused and the worst in the history of our country.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan, while reacting Friday, said the fact that President Buhari compared the challenges and sufferings being faced by Nigerians under his administration to the agony of the civil war underscored the horrible situation in the country today.

The President, while referring to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, said, “The past eighteen months have been some of the most difficult periods in the history of Nigeria. Since the civil war, I doubt whether we have seen a period of more heightened challenges than what we have witnessed in this period.”

Ologbondiyan said it was a pathetic antithesis for Mr President to attempt to exonerate himself by claiming that no government, since 1999, had done what his administration had done in six years, stressing that the claim portrays desperation to parry blame for the consequences of the misrule of his administration.

“Rather, what obtains in the public space is that no government has since 1999 brought our nation to her knees on every facet of life like the Buhari administration.

“It is appalling that in his speech, President Buhari had no concrete assurance on how to revamp our economy and how to end acts of terrorism in our country. Instead, the speech, as usual, dwelt on empty claims that have no bearing with the actual situation in the country.

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has said the position of their Southern counterparts that power should shift to the south is against the spirit and letter of the constitution.

This was part of the resolutions reached by the governors at the end of an emergency meeting of the forum held in Kaduna on Monday.

It also said it is sub-judice to act on the controversial Value Added Tax (VAT) while the case between Rivers State and the Federal Government is before the Supreme Court.

On open grazing, it called on the Federal Government to expedite action on the National Livestock Transformation Programme.

The resolutions were read by the chairman of the forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, in Kaduna on Monday.

Commenting on the security situation of the region, the forum observed the need for sustained synergy and coordinated efforts between the Federal and Northern States Governments.

The meeting also noted with concern the constraint of the security services and urged the Armed Forces to embark on simultaneous operations.

The Forum appreciated the ongoing onslaught against banditry, kidnapping and Boko Haram especially in the North East and parts of North West and the North Central States and encouraged the Armed forces and other security agencies to sustain the tempo to enable the security challenges to be permanently addressed in the shortest time.

On the ongoing debate on powershift, the forum noted that even though some Northern governors had earlier expressed views for a powershift to three geopolitical zones in the South with a view to promoting unity and peace in the nation; notwithstanding, the forum unanimously condemned the statement by the Southern Governors Forum that the presidency must go to the South.

The Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) says the nation’s debt profile is worrisome and unsustainable for the economy.

Timothy Olawale, NECA director-general, according to Vanguard, said this during the weekend, advising the federal government to adopt the public-private-partnership (PPP) approach to carry out infrastructural developments.

Earlier in September, the Debt Management Office (DMO) announced that Nigeria’s total public debt (federal and state governments) rose to N35.46 trillion at the end of the second quarter (Q2) of 2021 — an increase of N2.3 trillion in three months.

Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, had defended the federal government’s borrowing plans, saying the loans are being used to construct critical infrastructure for the benefit of Nigerians.

“We applaud the mammoth infrastructural development being carried out by this administration since inception; however, it is our belief that more can be achieved with the huge natural, human resources and capabilities available within the economy, if managed appropriately,” Olawale said.

“Not to say the least, the debt profile currently at N35.5 trillion is worrisome and unsustainable for an economy like ours.

“The Association is more concerned with a growing economy, where every economic concern generates sufficient revenue that could pay-off reasonably its debt provisions with less impact on its future earnings and accumulates huge foreign reserves.

“As infrastructural provision is critical to any development for any economy with the robust and friendly business environment, we call for more collaborative efforts in the form of Public-Private Partnership, PPP, in addressing the huge infrastructure deficits, in a very short term and at a cheaper rate.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said Nigeria was working on an ambitious Energy Plan towards reducing the energy shortcomings by the year 2030.

The President spoke on Friday in line with Nigeria’s role as a Global Theme Champion for the Energy Transition.

This was the theme of the High-Level Dialogue on Energy at the sidelines of the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to President Buhari: “Nigeria’s commitment to a just transition is reflected in our ambitious Energy Compact, which includes the Government’s flagship project to electrify Five-Million households and Twenty-Million people using decentralized solar energy solutions.

“This is a major first step towards closing our energy access deficit by 2030.

“Nigeria’s commitment is also reflected in the development of our Energy Transition Plan, which was developed with the support of the UK COP26 Energy Transition Council.”

The Nigerian leader called for support from developed countries to unlock the financing needed to accelerate a just energy transition for all.

“The focus of our discussions on transition must now evolve how we help countries develop detailed energy transition plans and commitments to mobilize enough financing to empower countries to implement those plans,” he said.

According to him: “The scale of financing required for Nigeria to achieve net-zero amounts to over Four-Hundred Billion US Dollars across the Nigerian economy in excess of business-as-usual spending over the next thirty years. This breaks down to One-Hundred and Fifty-Five Billion US Dollars net spends on generation capacity, One-Hundred and Thirty-Five Billion US Dollars on transmission and distribution infrastructure, Seventy-Five Billion UD Dollars on buildings, Twenty-One Billion US Dollars on industry and Twelve-Billion US Dollars on transport.

20/09/2021

Head Coach of Akwa United Football Club Kennedy Boboye has admitted that his team were eliminated from the CAF Champions League by the Algerian Champions CR Belouizdad, who were more technically superior.

The Nigerian champions crashed out at the preliminary stage of Africa’s premier competition after losing the second leg 2-0 in Algiers on Sunday and are out of the competition on a 2-1 aggregate score.

In a reaction to his team’s defeat and elimination from the competition, Coach Kennedy Boboye said “The moment we won by just one goal in Uyo on September 12th, I knew it will be difficult for us to get a favourable result in Algiers, but at the same time it wasn’t an impossible task for us. After a careful study of the first leg, I realized that our opponents (CR Belouizdad) were technically better than us and that was why we came to Algiers with a game plan which, unfortunately, didn’t work for us.

“Two of my players Charles Okafor and Marshal Johnson had passport issues, one player Denis Nya sustained an injury during the warm-up and that altered the plans we had. We needed to move Dare Ojo to the centre back position, which he did very well but we missed his experience in the midfield and it affected our game plan.

Boboye added, ” Having won the first leg, we knew that they (CR Belouizdad) will come out to attack us so our plan was to get at least a goal in the first half but we came up against a very good team. The way they played, one can tell that they have been playing together for a very long time. The first goal they scored was a good goal but the penalty against us wasn’t a good call but that is football.

“We have to go back and start preparing for the new NPFL season and I think that the exposure and experience we have garnered from these two games will help the coaching crew and the players in subsequent outings both in the league and at the continental level” Boboye assured.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has disclosed plans to take the war on drugs to Nigeria’s tertiary institutions in its bid to bring an end to the incessant abuse of hard drugs and narcotic substances in Nigerian Universities.

The Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA Brigadier-General Muhammad Buba Marwa made the disclosure when the Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja last Thursday.

Marwa said reports reaching him on the use and abuse of hard substances by students in Nigerian Universities is very disturbing and if left unchecked, the youths who form a majority of the Nigerian population will have no future.

He commended the Management of the University for the giant strides they are making, describing the University as a worthy partner in progress.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics, Professor Haruna Kuje Ayuba informed the Chairman that they were in his office as an academic community to invite him to serve as a Special Guest of Honor and Speaker at the forthcoming 3rd International Conference on Communication and Development in Africa to be hosted by the Institute of Strategic Development Communication ISDEVCOM scheduled to hold on 28th October 2021.

Ayuba lauded the strategic role and great impact the NDLEA has recorded under the watch of General Buba to include the seizure of over 8,268 kgs of co***ne and assorted drugs across 7 states of the federation, amongst other outstanding achievements.

Accompanying the Vice-Chancellor on the visit were the Directors of the Institute of Governance and Developmental Studies, Prof. Andrew Zamani, Linkages and International Corporation, Dr. K’tso Ngarhbu, Centre for Gender Studies, Dr Hauwa Mainoma, and the Chairman and members of the planning committee led by Mr. Uzoma Onyegbadue.

Facebook is expanding its playbook for tackling “coordinated inauthentic behaviour” to cover similar campaigns that don’t involve impersonation. Reuters first reported the new policy, which Facebook apparently says is in its early stages. Practically speaking, it means moderators can take broader actions than banning individual accounts or posts when they break hard rules, aiming to stop coordinated attempts to harass users or get them banned.

As Reuters points out, Facebook acknowledged in January that its coordinated inauthentic behaviour (or CIB) rules had limits. “We have little policy around coordinated authentic harm,” an internal report published by BuzzFeedadmitted, referring to the Stop the Steal campaign to overturn the US presidential election. “What do we do when a movement is authentic, coordinated through grassroots or authentic means, but is inherently harmful and violates the spirit of our policy?” The report suggested things like adding “friction” to the growth of movements like Stop the Steal — ultimately, it ended up banning the phrase from Facebook and Instagram.

The exact implications of this change aren’t clear. Reuters cites two types of incidents where Facebook might target “groups of coordinated real accounts that systemically break its rules”: mass reporting, where people falsely report another user for policy violations, and brigading, or a coordinated campaign to target someone for harassment. Some of these incidents could involve state-sponsored groups that are similar to government-backed “troll farms” but use participants’ real Facebook accounts. In theory, others could be independent — coordinated by political movements or groups of fans.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, says Nigeria cannot afford to have a one-party state.

He stated this during the plenary as a member, Chisom D**e (PDP-Rivers), defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday.

Mr D**e announced his defection, citing division in the PDP.

The defection letter was, however, read by the speaker to members.

Mr Gbajabiamila said the House had taken judicial notice of the division in the PDP, adding that on that note, Mr D**e should be admitted to the APC.

He called on the Clerk of the House to, as a matter of urgency, compile the number of members in each political party in the lower house.

Meanwhile, Ossai Ossai (PDP- Delta) had objected to Mr D**e’s defection, citing relevant law to back his claim.

He said that a member defecting to another party was mandated by law to present a valid reason for such defection, adding that the PDP remained united.

The Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, earlier faulted the defection, stressing that the APC was harassing and luring opposition to join its fold.

He said that despite the level of insecurity, unemployment, kidnapping and decay in infrastructure, the APC is forcing people to defect to the party.

The House Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, taunted the minority leader that more opposition would still join the APC.

Mr Gbajabiamila, however, said it would be wrong to turn the country into a one-party state.

The country’s political space has recently witnessed a gale of defections, notably from the opposition PDP to the ruling APC.

Among those who defected are Governors Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, Ben Ayade of Cross River State and Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State, all of whom crossed from the PDP to APC.

Also, some senators and members of the House of Representatives as well as other prominent members of the opposition party are involved in the series of defections.

The Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, was rushed out of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after slumping at a programme, on Thursday.

Bawa was giving his goodwill message at the National Identity Day celebration when he suddenly stopped speaking.

He was talking about a man the commission arrested in Ibadan, Oyo state, with 116 SIM cards when the incident happened.

Bawa had stopped talking and covered his face with his right palm, saying, “Please, excuse me, I can’t continue.”

He was assisted to his seat by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami, and other senior officials at the event, but the anti-graft czar slumped on his seat he was immediately rushed out of the seat of power.

The Master of Ceremony (MC) later announced that Bawa’s condition was stable.

“I am happy to announce to you that the EFCC Chairman is now stable,” he said.

But the chairman and those who rushed him out are yet to return to the hall as at the time of filing this report.
