I didn’t start on Upwork as a Top-Rated Executive Virtual Assistant.
I didn’t have premium clients waiting for me either.
What I had was a decision:
To treat freelancing like a business, not a side hustle.
Here’s what actually moved the needle for me 👇🏽
1️⃣ 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 “𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐕𝐀.”
High-paying clients aren’t hiring for tasks.
They’re paying for clarity, structure, and peace of mind.
Position yourself around outcomes, not to-do lists.
2️⃣ 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐔𝐩𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐕.
Clients don’t care about everything you’ve ever done.
They care about one thing:
👉 Do you understand my problem and can you solve it?
3️⃣ 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐬
When I leaned into Executive Assistance and operational support,
my rates increased, my confidence improved,
and the quality of clients I attracted changed.
4️⃣ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐬.
Not every job is for you and that’s a good thing.
The more you focus on roles that truly match your skill set and expertise,
the more Upwork trusts your profile,
and the more the algorithm recommends you to the right clients.
5️⃣ 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞.
Talking about yourself won’t get you hired.
Clearly articulating the client’s pain point will.
This alone can separate you from 90% of applicants.
6️⃣ 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠.
Great work + clear communication =
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reviews.
Client satisfaction is how Upwork measures performance.
Consistently deliver excellent work, manage expectations,
communicate proactively, and build trust, and it reflects directly in your Job Success Score.
7️⃣ 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 > 𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞.
Top-Rated freelancers use repeatable systems for:
• Proposals
• Client communication
• Delivery
• Feedback & reviews
That’s how great jobs turn into great ratings,
great reviews, and over time, the Top-Rated badge.
This is how I moved from “trying to get clients”
to becoming a trusted partner for founders and executives and why I now help other Virtual Assistants do the same.
