I didn’t start on Upwork as a Top-Rated Executive Virtual Assistant.
I didn’t have premium clients waiting for me either.

What I had was a decision:
To treat freelancing like a business, not a side hustle.

Here’s what actually moved the needle for me 👇🏽

1️⃣ 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 “𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐕𝐀.”
High-paying clients aren’t hiring for tasks.
They’re paying for clarity, structure, and peace of mind.
Position yourself around outcomes, not to-do lists.

2️⃣ 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐔𝐩𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐕.
Clients don’t care about everything you’ve ever done.
They care about one thing:
👉 Do you understand my problem and can you solve it?

3️⃣ 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐬
When I leaned into Executive Assistance and operational support,
my rates increased, my confidence improved,
and the quality of clients I attracted changed.

4️⃣ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐬.
Not every job is for you and that’s a good thing.
The more you focus on roles that truly match your skill set and expertise,
the more Upwork trusts your profile,
and the more the algorithm recommends you to the right clients.

Talking about yourself won’t get you hired.
Clearly articulating the client’s pain point will.
This alone can separate you from 90% of applicants.

Skill + Consistency = Opportunity.

Many new freelancers get it backwards.
They chase visibility, posting every day, tweaking their profiles, buying templates, and attending every masterclass, hoping clients will come knocking.

But here’s the truth:
When you focus on building competence, learning how to communicate, deliver, and solve real problems, you create a foundation that visibility can amplify.
Then, when you add consistency, showing up even on the quiet days, opportunities start chasing you.

The freelancers you admire aren’t lucky. They’re simply consistent in building and showcasing skill.

Stop Writing Proposals Like a CV, Clients Aren’t Just Hiring Employees, They’re Hiring Problem Solvers!

Here’s the truth, most freelancers lose clients before they even get a chance, not because they lack skills, but because their proposals sound like job applications.

Your proposal isn’t your CV, it’s your first conversation with the client. It should make them feel, “This person gets me.”

Here’s the secret:
Always start your proposal by proving you actually read the job post. Reflect their pain point, summarize what they need, and show how you can help specifically.

For example:
“I noticed you’re looking for someone to streamline your customer onboarding process. I’ve helped similar SaaS businesses reduce onboarding time by 40%, and here’s how I’d approach yours…”

That opening line alone tells the client:
✅ You read their post.
✅ You understand their need.
✅ You have a plan.

Remember, clients don’t want your life story, they want to feel understood.
So next time you write a proposal, ask yourself:
“Does this sound like a CV… or like a solution?”

Write like a problem solver. That’s how you get noticed and hired.

My first pay as a 7-month pregnant work-from-home mum was $100 in my first week at my first Upwork job. It took me a month to withdraw my funds because of some issues with my bank.

I remember walking out of the bank with $300 notes💵(3, $100 bills). It felt so good 😊, this was money made out of ease. Doing something I love from the comfort of my home. From a stay-at-home mum doing nothing at the time, this was a breakthrough!
