IME OKON FULFILLS PROMISE, FURNISHES SIX-CLASSROOM BLOCK DONATED TO AYADEHE TECH COLLEGE

The Member representing Itu-Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Ime Bassey Okon, has equipped the newly constructed six-classroom block facilitated and donated by him to Technical College, Ayadehe, Itu LGA, in fulfilment of the furnishing aspect of the project.

In a press statement over the weekend, the lawmaker said, "Though the furnishing of the classroom project, donated to the school earlier in the year, was to come later due to the procurement process, more needed to be done to ensure a better environment for the students. That is why I ensured electrical wiring and the installation of fans in those classrooms.

"I am an advocate of quality education. Therefore, we will continue to encourage quality learning using resources made available by my office to promote effective education at the grassroots."

Okon urged the students, teachers, and community members to protect the infrastructure and other amenities provided for their area so that development can thrive and be sustained.

In his response, the Principal of the School, Elder John Etim Bassey, appreciated the Federal Lawmaker for being a man of his word and ensuring the promise made to the students and Itu people was fulfilled earlier than the people expected. He prayed for the lawmaker's success as he continues to give effective representation to the people of Itu and Ibiono Ibom in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly.

Also, Mr. Donald Edet, a teacher at the school, could not contain his joy. "I want to say that the teachers, students, parents, and the entire community are very excited about the fulfilment of this aspect of the construction project of the six-classroom block by Rt. Hon. (Barr) Ime Bassey Okon.

"The furniture arrived earlier than we expected, considering the bureaucratic processes. We appreciate the Lawmaker for living up to his word and going the extra mile to ensure electrical wiring and the installation of fans in the classrooms were achieved.

"It is awesome because parents thought it was just a political statement to raise people's hopes, but in the end, the promise was fulfilled. Seeing this today, as a teacher, I would like to say thank you so much, Hon. Ime Okon. The teachers, students, and even the community are full of your praises. We are praying for you and your political ambition, which we are convinced is for the good of the people. We will continue to pray for you. Your ambition will never stop halfway."

*AKWA IBOM SPORTS COMMISSIONER LEADS ON-THE-SPOT ASSESSMENT OF STATE SPORTS FACILITIES*

In a move to strengthen grassroots sports development and upgrade sporting facilities across Akwa Ibom State, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, on Wednesday led a high-powered delegation from the Ministry of Sports on an on-the-spot assessment of sporting facilities in the state.

The Honourable Commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia, and key directors from various departments in the Ministry. The exercise according to him, was in line with Governor Umo Eno’s directive to take inventory of all sporting facilities and provide an accurate report on their condition for proper rehabilitation and utilization.

The team, guided by the Director of Facilities, Mr. Victor Owokure, took the team round different centers, namely: Ikot Ekpene Stadium, West Itam Sports Centre, Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, the Uyo Township Stadium and the Olympic Size swimming pool. The visit afforded the officials an opportunity to interact with athletes currently in training and assess the facilities firsthand.

During the tour, Elder Bassey expressed delight at seeing athletes in active training sessions, including those in table tennis, para-weightlifting, swimming, judo, and weightlifting. He commended their commitment and encouraged them to sustain their training routines beyond competitions or festivals. According to him, “It is impressive to see our athletes training consistently. Sports development should not be seasonal. We must always be ready.”

The Sports Commissioner and his team also visited the camp of Ibom Angels Football Club, where they interacted with Uyo township stadium manager Mr John Udo and listened to their complaints. Elder Bassey assured the team that their issues would be addressed promptly as part of the ministry’s broader reform agenda.

During the tour, the Commissioner also gave an on-the-spot directive for the immediate provision of proper kits to judo athletes who were found training without appropriate gear. He stressed that the welfare of athletes remains a top priority for the Ministry.

Speaking during an interview at the end of the inspection, Elder Bassey explained that Governor Umo Eno had mandated him to present a comprehensive report on the condition of sporting facilities across the state. He noted that the findings from the inspection would form part of a holistic report to be submitted to the Governor after subsequent visits to other sporting centers, including those in Eket

“We have seen a lot, and it has been quite instructive. The Governor has shown strong interest in sports development, and he wants to be fully briefed on the state of our facilities. After visiting other centers, we will compile a detailed report highlighting areas that need repairs, upgrading, or replacement,” he stated.

He particularly emphasized the importance of reviving the swimming pool at the Uyo Township Stadium, noting that Governor Umo Eno had expressed keen interest in ensuring that the facility becomes functional. “His Excellency has directed that the swimming pool should be well managed with the employment of qualified coaches and lifeguards so that it can serve its purpose for athlete training,” Elder Bassey added.

Among those who joined the Commissioner on the inspection were the Director of Sports, Mrs. Brigid Otton; Director of Administration, Mrs. Iniobong Udo; Director of Coaching, Mrs. Catherine Ekuta; Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Mrs. Peace Dan; Director of Organizing, Mrs. Margaret Ekpo; and Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Mr. Gabriel Okon.

The inspection, according to the Commissioner, marks the beginning of a continuous process aimed at repositioning sports in Akwa Ibom State for excellence and sustainability. He reaffirmed that Governor Umo Eno’s administration remains committed to creating an enabling environment for sports growth and talent development from the grassroots to international levels.

First Anniversary: Ibeno Council Chair to Host Mega Empowerment Programme
..Lists Key Achievements in Office

As part of activities to mark her first anniversary in office, the first female elected Executive Chairman of Ibeno Local Government Area, Hon. (Dcns) Glory Ekah Effiong, has announced plans to host a Mega Empowerment Programme aimed at enhancing livelihoods and deepening the impact of governance at the grassroots.

Speaking with journalists recently in Ibeno, Hon. Effiong disclosed that the empowerment event is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at the Council Secretariat Grounds, Upenekang, by 10AM.

The initiative, she said, is in line with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno’s administration and reflects her commitment to inclusive development.

“To further empower our people at the grassroots and extend the blessings of the ARISE Agenda, we have put together a robust empowerment package that targets various sectors including; transportation, education, marine, small businesses and vocational skills. This is also our way of celebrating one year of purposeful leadership,” she stated.

According to the Council Boss, beneficiaries of the empowerment scheme will receive items such as four engine boats (25HP each), six tricycles (keke), comprising four pickup-type models and two conventional ones, as part of efforts to enhance mobility and improve economic activities.

Other items include five electric grinders, five hair dryers, five units of 2.5kVA generators, and five sewing machines, all aimed at supporting skill acquisition and small-scale enterprises.

In the area of fisheries and marine support, 100 “Nkukang” fishing nets, six crayfish nets, five big fish nets, and 150 life vests will be distributed to local fishermen.

On educational support, Hon. Effiong revealed that bursaries will be awarded to 150 students in tertiary institutions, while 20 students, two per ward, will receive educational grants of N200,000 each.

In addition, 20 secondary school students will benefit from school support, alongside the distribution of bags, sandals, and exercise books to pupils in public primary schools.

For business development, grants of N100,000 each will be given to 20 people, N200,000 each to 10 entrepreneurs and N50,000 each to 20 petty traders, as part of her administration’s economic inclusion agenda.

Meanwhile, as part of the anniversary celebration, the Chairman has constructed a model primary health centre in Iwuo-achang, aptly named the “Pastor (Mrs) Patience Umo Eno Primary Health Centre” in Iwuo-achang.

The Chairman noted that naming the health centre after the Governor’s wife was a symbolic gesture in recognition of her values of compassion and commitment to family health.

"This model health centre, fully equipped with modern medical facilities, will bring accessible and quality healthcare closer to mothers, children, and families in Ibeno. It also reflects the values of Late (Mrs) Patience Umo Eno, whom we are proud to honour,” Effiong said.

Since taking office in October 2024, Hon. Glory Effiong has undertaken numerous infrastructural and social development projects across the Local government. Her administration has completed the renovation of key staff quarters in the Security Village, construction of a community health centre in Iwuokpom, installation of solar-powered streetlights at the council secretariat and provision of hospital equipment to the Polyclinic Upenekang.

Other notable achievements include the establishment of the ARISE Farm, construction of a perimeter fence at the Mkpanak Police Station, renovation of the central motor park, and reconstruction of residential buildings destroyed during the Ibeno/Eket communal clash.

In the area of welfare, the Council has supported widows and orphans through targeted relief interventions, and completed the ARISE Compassionate Home for a vulnerable citizen in Okorutip.

Ongoing projects include the construction of an ultra-modern secretariat complex, an ICT and JAMB Centre, road grading in various communities, drainage construction, and the declaration of ‘Operation No Potholes’ initiative to rehabilitate internal roads within Ibeno Local Government Area.

Hon. Effiong reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to grassroots development and expressed gratitude to Governor Umo Eno for his examplary leadership style and support.

She added that the first anniversary celebration would be a moment of reflection, appreciation, and renewed dedication to service.

“This empowerment programme and the projects we are commissioning are a modest contribution towards the broader vision of the ARISE Agenda. I remain committed to building a more inclusive, healthy, and economically viable Ibeno for all.”

The Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon (Barr) Ime Bassey Okon, has lauded the Executive Chairmen of Itu and Ibiono Ibom Local Government Councils, Hon Ubong Nkutt and Hon Asuakak Umoh, for their remarkable performances within one year in office, describing their stewardship as a true reflection of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda in action at the grassroots.

Hon Okon, who made the commendation in a Goodwill Message to the two Council Bosses, said the visible transformations across Itu and Ibiono Ibom within just one year have shown that both leaders have not only aligned with the Governor’s development blueprint but have localized it with outstanding creativity and impact.

The federal lawmaker observed that Hon Nkutt’s administration in Itu has changed the face of the third tier of government through a blend of infrastructural renewal, security intervention, agricultural empowerment, and educational support. He particularly noted the construction of a new administrative complex, the renovation of the legislative building, and the establishment of a Forward Operating Base at Ikot Adakpan Beach to strengthen border security.

The Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs, equally commended the Itu chairman’s focus on youth empowerment through scholarships and skill acquisition programmes, as well as his rural road rehabilitation efforts that have restored access across communities. He said such initiatives mirror the inclusive and community-driven governance principles espoused by Governor Umo Eno under the ARISE Agenda.

Turning to Ibiono Ibom, Hon Okon described Obong Asuakak Umoh’s performance as equally outstanding, saying his administration has demonstrated what visionary leadership at the third tier should represent. He highlighted Ibiono Ibom’s awe-inspiring achievements in infrastructure, human capacity development, agriculture, health, and education as clear evidence of a responsive and people-centric government.

From the construction of the Traditional Rulers Council Office Complex, the reconnection of over 17 villages to the national grid, provision of solar street lights, and renovation of council structures to the award of full university scholarships, youth engagement, and agricultural expansion, the federal legislator said the Ibiono Ibom story under Hon Umoh is that of steady progress and purposeful governance.

He particularly applauded the chairman’s social welfare interventions, which include cash support for widows and cooperatives, sponsorship of skills acquisition trainees at the Dakkada Training Centre, and medical support for indigent patients, describing them as the true essence of leadership with empathy.

Hon Okon said the combined performances of the two local government chairmen have further strengthened the reputation of Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency as a model of development-oriented leadership in Akwa Ibom State. He reaffirmed his readiness to continue partnering with the two council leaders to attract more federal projects to the two areas and to ensure that every community in the constituency benefits from ongoing development efforts.

While congratulating Hon Nkutt and Hon Umoh on their first anniversary in office, the law luminary urged them to sustain the momentum and continue to interpret the Governor’s ARISE Agenda in practical terms that improve lives and foster unity at the grassroots.

Barr Ime Okon specifically expressed appreciation to Governor Umo Eno for creating the enabling environment that has allowed local government administrations to thrive and deliver effectively, describing the Governor’s leadership as the catalyst that has restored purpose, discipline, and compassion to governance in Akwa Ibom State.

On October 1st, 2025, beneath the rising sun of Independence, the Ibom Tropicana Grounds became a stage of wonder. Fifteen children of Ibiono Ibom emerged—not as mere participants, but as shining heralds of heritage. They stormed the arena in a river of color and rhythm, their steps painting a portrait of beauty, their laughter spilling like silver bells, their costumes alive with the soul of a people.

The festival was no ordinary gathering; it was a tapestry of splendor, humor, brilliance, and culture, unfolding in graceful motion.

Then like the roll of thunder across distant hills a royal voice pierced the air.

It was the voice of the throne.
It was the voice of history.
It was the voice of His Royal Majesty, Edidem Mkpoikanke Ime Okon, the young boy cast to play the role of Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom.

With the cadence of a conqueror and the spirit of a sage, he lifted his voice:

“Nigeria isonghoooo!
Akwa Ibom isonghoooo!
Ibiono Ibom Akpanankid isonghoooo!
Iban Ibiono Ibom Eno mbangoooooooh!”

The crowd shook with pride; the air itself bowed to his words.

“I am His Royal Majesty, Edidem Mkpoikanke Ime Okon,” he declared, “the paramount ruler of Ibiono Ibom, the timeless custodian of our sacred traditions. At my right hand stands Her Royal Majesty, Queen Joy Mkpoikanke Ime, elegant and resplendent, mirror of dignity, jewel of our throne.”

The King stretched his hand toward the children, radiant in cultural attire.

“Behold these little ones,” he proclaimed. “They are not only the flowers of our present but also the seeds of our future. Today, they stand as the proud envoys of every son and daughter of Ibiono Ibom whether dwelling in our fertile homeland or blazing trails in faraway lands.”

His voice rose, a drumbeat of memory and pride:
“Ibiono Ibom is vast! Bound by Cross River State to the east and Abia State to the west. Our land is fertile, lush with palm groves, adorned with flora and fauna. Our soil, rich with the promise of harvest, sings with abundance. Ours is a heritage unbroken, a culture alive in every drumbeat, every dance step, every ancestral chant.”

And then, like a royal procession, he summoned the images of his people:
“Here stands Ete Ibiono, symbol of our industrious men, his bicycle a crown of labor and enterprise. Here is Eka Ibiono, the matriarch, virtuous and versatile, foundation of family and society. From Ikpanya comes the fisherman, guardian of our waters, his net a symbol of providence. Our maidens—the enchanting Adsian Uboikpa—dance with the grace of the morning breeze. And our warriors descendants of the indomitable Major General Philip Effiong, whose name awaits immortal honor—stand unbending, guardians of Ibiono Ibom’s legacy.”

Then, the king’s voice struck like lightning against the sky:

“Ibiono Ibom is LARGE!
Ibiono Ibom is PEACEFUL!
Ibiono Ibom is PRODUCTIVE!
Ibiono Ibom is BLESSED without measure!”

And with a regal nod, he honored the stewards of his people’s present journey:

“At the helm of our ship sails the Executive Chairman, Rt. Hon. Obong Asuakak Umoh, with steady hand and clear vision. Beside him, like a beacon of grace and strength, stands his beloved wife, Obongwan Etiemana Asuakak Umoh, the First Lady of Ibiono Ibom.”

The crowd erupted. The drums beat again. The children swayed in unison.
And on that sacred day, Ibiono Ibom stood revealed, majestic, united, and eternal.
