CAPITAL OF FRIENDSHIP, IME OKON'S JOURNEY

“Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.” - Woodrow Wilson.

In politics, ambition often overshadows compassion. This is the truth! But the narrative changes in the leadership style of Rt. Hon. (Barr) Ime Bassey Okon.

He is the kind of politician whose gate is never closed against the people. This can be attested to even by the residents of his current residential location for more than 10 years. Mbak Itam people describe him as a community builder who has chosen to live amongst them for more than a decade and not carried away by the euphoria of his political attainment as this is the behaviour of some politicians. They relocate to highbrow areas where the people whom they represent can't reach them.

Everyone is given a sense of belonging. His reach stretches beyond Itu and Ibiono, reminding us that genuine friendship knows no boundaries.

Hon. Ime Okon is not a distant representative of his people. He is a familiar face and dependable friend. To some, he is their representative in parliament; to many more, he is simply “Ime”, the man who listens, who cares, and who shows up.

For him, politics is not a game of power but a conversation built on trust. That is why his story resonates. It feels less like politics and more like friendship practised in public life. This is why, to call him a friend of the people is not an exaggeration. It is the most honest description of a man who has chosen the path of friendship while in service of his people.

Ibiono Ibom Council Boss Supports visually Impaired indigene on WBU Conference

Mr Samuel James, a visually impaired indigene of Ikot Akpan Nya Ididep in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, was yesterday, 25th August, presented with an international passport facilitated by the Executive Chairman of Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, RT. Hon. Asuakak Umoh

Presenting the Passport on behalf of the Chairman, the Director of Social Development, Education, Information, Sports and Culture, Mrs Roseline Etukudo thanked the Executive Chairman for the gesture and urged Mr James to be a good ambassador of the Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area in Brazil

On his part, the happy Mr James thanked the Executive Chairman for his support and promised not to disappoint the Chairman while in Brazil.

Mr James is one of the five delegates who will be representing Akwa Ibom State at the 2025 World Blind Union (WBU) Quadrennial Conference taking place at Sao Paulo in Brazil from 1st to 5th September, 2025

The Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ime Bassey Okon, has joined family, friends, associates, and well-wishers across the country to celebrate Distinguished Senator Ita Enang on the occasion of his birthday, applauding his remarkable contributions to governance and national development.

AKWA UNITED GETS NEW MANAGEMENT AND TECHNICAL CREW

Akwa United Football Club has announced a new management committee, with Mr. Joseph Eno appointed as the new Chairman. The move comes as Governor Umo Eno directs the immediate return of the club to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), stressing that a club of Akwa United’s stature belongs in the top flight.

Mr. Eno, a seasoned procurement expert and football enthusiast, is a University of Nigeria, Nsukka graduate with a rich background in both corporate and grassroots football. He retired from Total Energies after 20 years of service and is currently the MD/CEO of CampeGee Hotel and Resort, Uyo.

Supporting him in the new management setup are: Pastor Ini Edoho – Vice Chairman, Mr. Jimmy Joshua – General Manager, Elder Omon Bassey – Club Secretary, Mr. Festus Akpan – Team Manager, Mr. Mfon Patrick – Media Manager, Mr. NsikakAbasi Akpan – Assistant Media Manager

THE FRIENDSHIP THAT CUTS ACROSS ALL CLASSES

Many politicians are seen from a distance, but Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ime Bassey Okon stands as a refreshing exception. Representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency, he has become more than a legislator, he has proven himself a reliable companion, a constant presence, and a friend to all, regardless of background, belief, or affiliation.

Ime Okon has earned his place in the hearts of many because of his rare ability to engage people from different walks of life, different political leanings, and across religious or socioeconomic divides. He is not one to ask, "Are you in my camp?" before he renders help. He does not care about your background when you reach out in need. He has a consistent track record of treating everyone with respect, from elders in our villages to young men on the street corners.

This is not hearsay. This is reality. Many of us can point to moments, quiet and unsung, where Hon. Ime Okon stepped into situations that didn’t make the headlines but changed lives.

One can not overemphasize how rare it is to have a representative who picks up calls from constituents, not only during elections but even now when the cameras are off. Ime Okon listens. He consults. He knows how to return to his roots. Above all, his responses inspire.

The empowerment schemes he has championed so far have not been party biased. His educational support programs do not ask for a political allegiance before a name is considered.

For some politicians, “friendship” is a convenient political phrase, but for Ime Okon, it is a way of life. He relates warmly with his people at functions, checks on the sick, attends family engagements and weddings, etc, not as a VIP but as one of us, often standing shoulder to shoulder.

His humility doesn’t reduce his influence. It increases his value.

Beyond politics, into humanity, he has demonstrated that humanity is not a party thing. It’s a character thing. And in that character, we see a man we can trust, a friend we can count on, and a leader who understands what it means to walk with the people, not above them.

Ime Okon may not be perfect. No leader is. But in the many ways that matter, he has proven himself a friend to all. As a constituent, I believe that when the history of this era is written, it will be said of him that he led with heart, walked in humility, and gave himself to the people, all the people.
And for that, we're proud to call him a Friend.
