🌸 THE SCHOLARSHIP GIRL

CHAPTER 34 – THEY CAME FOR LILY

The footsteps grew louder.

Clang…

Clang…

Clang…

The sound of metal against stone echoed through the underground tunnel.

Lily stood frozen beside her mother.

The police officer raised his flashlight toward the darkness.

“Everyone, stay behind me.”

The businessman immediately stepped in front of Lily and her mother.

The principal looked around nervously.

“How many people are there?”

The officer listened carefully.

“At least four.”

The elderly woman gasped.

“Four?”

The old man tightened his grip on his walking stick.

“They found the entrance.”

Lily looked at her mother.

“Mum… who are they?”

Her mother didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she reached into the folds of her clothing and pulled out a small leather pouch.

She opened it and removed an old piece of paper.

“This is why they came.”

Lily stared at it.

“What is that?”

Her mother unfolded the paper.

It contained several names, numbers, and handwritten notes.

At the bottom was a symbol Lily had seen before.

The same symbol was engraved on her silver butterfly locket.

Lily touched the locket.

“This symbol…”

Her mother nodded.

“It belongs to the people behind everything.”

The businessman looked at the paper.

“You still have it?”

“I kept it all these years.”

The principal stepped closer.

“What exactly is written there?”

Her mother looked at him.

“Names of people who were paid to keep the scholarship secret.”

The principal's face changed.

“People inside the school?”

“Yes.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“You mean someone at my school knows about all this?”

Her mother nodded.

“Someone has always known.”

The cassette recorder suddenly crackled.

Everyone turned toward it.

The red light blinked.

Then Samuel Okon's voice played again.

“If you are hearing this, they have found the vault.”

The businessman stepped toward the recorder.

“Samuel…”

The recording continued.

“Do not trust anyone who tells Lily that the scholarship was created simply to help her.”

Lily's heart pounded.

Samuel continued.

“The scholarship was created because Lily is the last person who can expose the truth.”

The recording stopped.

Silence.

Lily looked at her mother.

“What truth?”

Her mother took a deep breath.

“Your family owned land.”

“Land?”

“More land than you ever knew existed.”

The principal frowned.

“What does that have to do with the scholarship?”

“Everything.”

Her mother looked toward the tunnel.

“Years ago, powerful people wanted that land. They forged documents claiming that your grandfather had transferred ownership.”

The businessman continued.

“But Samuel discovered the forgery.”

“Yes,” Lily's mother said. “And he collected evidence.”

She pointed toward the black diary.

“That diary contains part of it.”

Lily looked at the diary.

“And the rest?”

Her mother stared at Lily's keys.

“The keys lead to it.”

Lily looked down.

Keys 25 and 26.

“But there are only two.”

Her mother shook her head.

“No.”

Lily looked up.

“There is a third key.”

The businessman stepped forward.

“Where?”

Her mother looked directly at Lily.

“With your father.”

Lily's breath caught.

“My father has the third key?”

“If he's still alive.”

Before anyone could speak—

BANG!

The underground door at the end of the tunnel shook violently.

The police officer raised his weapon.

“Everyone move back!”

Another BANG!

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The elderly woman began praying quietly.

The businessman grabbed Lily's hand.

“We need to leave.”

Lily shook her head.

“I'm not leaving without my mother.”

Her mother held her tightly.

“And I'm not leaving without you.”

The businessman looked toward the police officer.

“Is there another exit?”

The officer pointed toward the far side of the vault.

“There should be.”

The principal quickly moved toward the old shelves.

“I remember seeing a passage behind these.”

He pushed against one of the wooden shelves.

Nothing happened.

He pushed again.

A loud click sounded.

The shelf moved slightly.

Everyone stared.

“There!”

The businessman helped push it aside.

A narrow passage appeared behind it.

Cold air rushed into the room.

The police officer shone his flashlight inside.

“It leads upward.”

Lily's mother suddenly stopped.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”

She walked toward the table.

She picked up Samuel Okon's diary.

Then she opened it to a page near the back.

There was a small handwritten message.

“When they come for Lily, take her to the place where the first promise was made.”

Below it was an old address.

The businessman read it.

His face immediately changed.

“No.”

Lily noticed.

“What?”

He folded the page.

“We can't go there.”

“Why?”

“Because that's where your father disappeared.”

Lily stared at him.

“Then that's exactly where we're going.”

Her mother grabbed her hand.

“Lily, you don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

She looked at everyone.

“My whole life, people have been making decisions for me because they thought they were protecting me.”

She held up the two brass keys.

“But this time, I'm going to find the truth myself.”

A loud crash came from the tunnel.

The door had broken.

The police officer turned.

“They're inside!”

Several beams of light appeared in the darkness.

Voices echoed through the passage.

“Search every room!”

“Find the girl!”

“Don't let her leave!”

Lily's mother pulled her toward the secret passage.

“Run!”

Everyone rushed through the opening.

The businessman stayed behind for a moment with the police officer.

“Go!” the officer shouted.

The businessman turned and ran after Lily.

They disappeared into the narrow passage just as several shadowy figures entered the vault.

One of them stopped beside the wooden table.

He noticed the diary was missing.

Then he looked at the open passage.

A slow smile appeared on his face.

“She has the keys.”

Another man stepped beside him.

“Then we follow her.”

The first man shook his head.

“No.”

He picked up the old photograph Lily had dropped.

He stared at the photograph of Lily's mother and Samuel Okon.

Then he whispered:

“Let her find the third key.”

The second man looked confused.

“Why?”

The man smiled.

“Because the third key will lead us to everything.”

---

Meanwhile…

Lily and the others hurried through the narrow passage.

Their footsteps echoed against the stone walls.

The passage became darker as they moved deeper.

Suddenly, Lily noticed something carved into the wall.

She stopped.

“Mum.”

Her mother turned.

“What is it?”

Lily raised her flashlight.

Carved into the stone were three symbols.

A butterfly.

A key.

And the number 27.

Lily touched the carving.

“This wasn't in Samuel's diary.”

Her mother stared at it.

Then her face went pale.

“I've never seen that before.”

The elderly man stepped closer.

“I have.”

Everyone turned.

“You have?”

He nodded slowly.

“I saw that symbol the night your father disappeared.”

Lily's heart raced.

“What happened that night?”

The old man looked toward the darkness ahead.

“Your father wasn't alone.”

“Who was with him?”

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Samuel Okon.”

Lily stared at him.

“Samuel was there?”

“Yes.”

“And what happened?”

The old man looked at Lily with tears in his eyes.

“Your father handed Samuel the third key.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“Then where is the key now?”

The old man didn't answer.

Instead, he pointed toward the darkness ahead.

“Where your father went.”

Everyone became silent.

Then Lily heard something.

A faint sound.

Click.

She looked down.

One of the brass keys in her hand had begun to glow faintly.

The number 25 reflected against the stone wall.

Lily slowly raised her head.

Ahead of them stood an old wooden door.

And carved across it were the words:

THE FIRST PROMISE WAS MADE HERE.

Lily looked at her mother.

Her mother whispered:

“Your father is closer than we thought.”

Behind them, distant footsteps entered the passage.

They were being followed.

Lily tightened her grip around the keys.

“Then let's open the door.”

She reached toward the lock.

🌸 THE SCHOLARSHIP GIRL

CHAPTER 33 – THE MOTHER'S TRUTH

For several seconds, Lily couldn't move.

She simply stared at the woman standing at the entrance of the tunnel.

The woman's face was older than the one Lily remembered from photographs, but there was something unmistakable about her.

The eyes.

The smile.

The small mark above her eyebrow.

Lily's lips trembled.

“...Mum?”

The woman took another slow step forward.

“Lily.”

That one word broke something inside her.

Lily dropped the old photograph.

“Mummy!”

She ran toward the woman.

The woman opened her arms, and Lily fell into them.

They held each other tightly.

Lily began crying.

“I thought you were dead.”

Her mother closed her eyes as tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I know.”

“Where have you been?”

“I wanted to come back.”

“Then why didn't you?”

Her mother looked over Lily's shoulder at the people standing behind her.

“Because I couldn't.”

The businessman lowered his head.

Lily noticed.

She slowly pulled away from her mother.

“You knew she was alive.”

The businessman didn't answer.

Lily's expression changed.

“You knew.”

“I suspected she was still alive,” he said quietly.

“You suspected?”

“I spent years trying to find her.”

Lily's mother interrupted.

“He did try.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He wasn't the one who took me.”

Lily looked confused.

“Then who did?”

Her mother glanced toward the tunnel.

“They are still looking for me.”

The police officer immediately raised his flashlight.

“Who are they?”

Her mother took a deep breath.

“The people who created the scholarship.”

Lily frowned.

“But why would the people behind the scholarship want to hurt you?”

“Because the scholarship was never really about money.”

She looked directly at Lily.

“It was about protecting a secret.”

The principal stepped forward.

“What secret?”

Lily's mother looked at him.

“Your school was chosen because it was one of the places they could hide the records.”

The principal's face went pale.

“What records?”

“Financial records. Property documents. Names. Payments.”

The businessman suddenly spoke.

“They used the scholarship program to move money and hide ownership of several properties.”

The principal stared at him.

“And Samuel discovered it.”

Her mother nodded.

“Samuel found everything.”

Lily remembered the black diary.

“So they went after him.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“They came after me because Samuel trusted me.”

Lily looked down at the two brass keys in her hands.

“Then why did he leave these keys for me?”

Her mother smiled sadly.

“Because he knew you would eventually find the vault.”

She gently touched Lily's silver butterfly locket.

“And because this was meant to lead you to me.”

Lily looked at the locket.

“This?”

Her mother nodded.

“Your father gave it to me before everything happened.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“My father?”

The room became silent.

The principal slowly removed his glasses.

The elderly woman covered her mouth.

Even the businessman looked surprised.

Lily stared at her mother.

“You never told me about my father.”

Her mother's eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“Everybody keeps saying that!”

Lily's voice broke.

“Protect me from what? My whole life has been secrets!”

Her mother reached for her hand.

“I know.”

“No, you don't!”

Lily pulled away.

“I grew up believing you abandoned me!”

Her mother began crying.

“I never abandoned you.”

“Then why?”

“Because the night I disappeared, they gave me a choice.”

Lily froze.

“What choice?”

Her mother whispered:

“Leave you alone and disappear... or watch them take you too.”

Lily's face went pale.

“They threatened me with you.”

The businessman closed his eyes.

“I helped her escape that night,” he said.

Lily looked at him.

“Then why didn't you take me with her?”

“Because they were watching you.”

He swallowed.

“If I had tried to take you, they would have followed us.”

Lily looked between them.

For the first time, she understood why so many people had been hiding things from her.

But another question remained.

“Where is my father?”

Her mother became completely still.

The elderly man slowly looked away.

Lily noticed.

“Why is everyone looking away?”

Her mother whispered:

“Your father disappeared before I did.”

“Is he dead?”

Her mother didn't answer.

Lily's heart began pounding.

“Mum.”

Silence.

“Mum, is my father alive?”

Her mother looked toward the old cassette recorder.

“I don't know.”

Suddenly—

CLICK.

The recorder switched on.

Everyone turned.

Samuel Okon's voice filled the vault again.

But this recording was different.

His voice sounded urgent.

“If Lily has finally found her mother, then there is only one secret left.”

Lily stepped closer.

Samuel continued:

“Lily's father did not disappear.”

Her eyes widened.

“He was taken.”

The recording crackled.

“He was taken to the place where the first scholarship was created.”

The businessman looked at Lily's mother.

She whispered:

“No…”

Samuel's voice continued.

“And Lily must never go there alone.”

The recording stopped.

Then the lights inside the vault suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

The police officer shouted:

“Everybody stay together!”

A loud metallic sound echoed from the tunnel.

CLANG!

Then another.

CLANG!

Someone was coming.

Lily's mother grabbed her hand.

“Lily, we have to leave.”

“Why?”

Her mother looked terrified.

“Because they found us.”

A faint beam of light appeared deep inside the tunnel.

Then another.

Then several more.

Multiple footsteps echoed through the darkness.

The businessman moved in front of Lily.

The police officer raised his flashlight.

The principal backed away.

The elderly man gripped his walking stick.

And Lily's mother whispered something that made Lily's blood run cold.

“They didn't come for me.”

She looked at Lily.

“They came for you.”

THE SCHOLARSHIP GIRL

CHAPTER 32 – THE MAN WHO KNEW

The room remained frozen.

Lily stared at the photograph in her trembling hands.

Her mother stood in the picture, smiling softly.

Beside her was the businessman.

But the photograph looked old—much older than Lily had expected.

On the back, the words were still visible:

“THE MAN WHO PROMISED TO SAVE US.”

Lily slowly lifted her eyes.

“Why are you in this picture?”

The businessman said nothing.

“Answer me.”

Her voice broke.

The principal stepped closer.

“Sir… you need to explain this.”

The businessman finally looked at Lily.

“I knew your mother.”

Lily's heart sank.

“You knew her?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

He swallowed hard.

“Your mother came to me many years ago because she was afraid.”

“Afraid of who?”

He looked toward the tunnel.

“People who wanted what your family had.”

Lily tightened her grip around the photograph.

“What did my family have?”

The elderly woman suddenly spoke.

“The scholarship.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Lily frowned.

“But I thought the scholarship was created to help poor students.”

The elderly woman shook her head.

“That is only the story people were told.”

Silence filled the vault.

“The real scholarship,” she continued, “was created to protect one child from a secret that could destroy an entire family.”

Lily stared at her.

“One child?”

The woman nodded.

“Your mother was that child once.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“And now…”

The elderly woman looked directly at her.

“Now it is you.”

The businessman lowered his head.

Lily noticed.

“You knew this?”

He didn't answer.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

The word came out quietly.

Lily stepped backward.

“How long?”

The businessman finally looked at her.

“Since before you received the scholarship.”

Lily's face changed.

“So everything was planned?”

“No.”

“You followed me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You lied to me!”

Her voice echoed through the vault.

The police officer glanced nervously toward the tunnel.

“Everyone, keep your voices down.”

But Lily couldn't stop.

“You knew my mother! You knew about Samuel Okon! You knew about the scholarship! And you watched me struggle without telling me anything!”

The businessman looked devastated.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Lily froze.

“Alive?”

He nodded.

“Your mother didn't disappear because she wanted to leave you.”

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“She was taken.”

The elderly man lowered his head.

“We were there that night,” he whispered.

Lily turned toward him.

“You saw what happened?”

The old man nodded slowly.

“Your mother gave us instructions before they came.”

“What instructions?”

“To protect you.”

The cassette recorder suddenly clicked.

Everyone turned.

The red light came back on.

A recording began.

Samuel Okon's voice filled the vault.

“Lily, if you have reached this point, then the truth can no longer be hidden from you.”

Lily held her breath.

“Your mother trusted very few people. One of them was the man standing beside you.”

The businessman closed his eyes.

Samuel continued.

“He promised her he would protect you.”

A pause.

“But promises are dangerous when fear becomes stronger than courage.”

The recording crackled.

Lily looked at the businessman.

Samuel's voice returned.

“If he is still with you, ask him about the night your mother disappeared.”

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Lily's voice was barely a whisper.

“What happened that night?”

The businessman looked toward the floor.

“I failed her.”

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“What does that mean?”

“I was supposed to take your mother somewhere safe.”

“And?”

“I was followed.”

The businessman clenched his fists.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

“The people behind the scholarship.”

Lily stared at him.

“Where is my mother now?”

The businessman looked at her.

“I don't know.”

Lily's face fell.

“But I know who took her.”

The police officer immediately stepped forward.

“Who?”

Before the businessman could answer, a loud metallic sound came from the tunnel.

CLANG!

Everyone turned.

The police officer raised his flashlight.

A figure stood at the far end.

This time, it wasn't a shadow.

Someone was actually there.

The figure slowly stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

The elderly woman gasped.

The businessman grabbed Lily's arm.

“Stay behind me.”

But Lily pulled away.

“No.”

She stared into the darkness.

“I want answers.”

The figure stopped.

A familiar voice echoed through the tunnel.

“Then you should ask your mother yourself.”

Lily's heart nearly stopped.

The businessman went completely pale.

The principal whispered:

“Impossible…”

The elderly woman began crying.

The figure slowly stepped into the golden light.

Lily stared at the face emerging from the darkness.

She couldn't breathe.

She couldn't speak.

Because the woman standing before her looked exactly like the faded photograph on the table.

Exactly like the woman Lily had spent years believing was gone forever.

The woman looked at Lily.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Lily…”

Lily dropped the photograph.

“...Mum?”

The vault fell silent.

Then the woman whispered:

“I have been waiting for you.”

🌸 THE SCHOLARSHIP GIRL

CHAPTER 31 – THE VOICE IN THE DARK

The underground vault suddenly became completely silent.

Lily stood frozen, still holding the letter marked “DEAR LILY” in one hand and the two brass keys engraved 25 and 26 in the other.

The cassette recorder on the table continued to glow red.

Then—

CLICK.

The machine stopped.

Everyone looked toward the dark tunnel.

The police officer raised his flashlight.

“Everybody stay behind me,” he said quietly.

The businessman immediately moved closer to Lily.

“Don't move away from me,” he whispered.

Lily nodded, but her eyes remained fixed on the tunnel.

Something was there.

She could feel it.

The elderly woman covered her mouth.

The elderly man tightened his grip around his walking stick.

“What is happening?” the principal whispered.

Before anyone could answer, a voice came from the darkness.

Low.

Calm.

Almost familiar.

“Lily…”

Her heart stopped.

She knew that voice.

Or at least, she thought she did.

“Who are you?” Lily asked.

No answer came.

The police officer took one careful step toward the tunnel.

“Show yourself!”

A faint sound of footsteps echoed from somewhere deep inside.

Step…

Step…

Step…

The businessman pulled Lily slightly backward.

“Don't go closer.”

But Lily noticed something on the floor.

A small piece of paper.

She bent down and picked it up.

It was another torn page from Samuel Okon's diary.

Her eyes moved across the handwriting.

> “If they ever find Lily, she must never trust the person who claims to be protecting her.”

Lily's hands began to shake.

She looked at the businessman.

Then at the principal.

Then at the elderly woman and man.

“Who was Samuel warning me about?”

Nobody answered.

The elderly woman suddenly began to cry.

“Because he knew…” she whispered.

Everyone turned toward her.

“Knew what?” Lily asked.

The woman wiped her tears.

“Samuel knew that someone inside your mother's circle betrayed her.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“My mother was betrayed?”

The woman nodded slowly.

“Your mother trusted the wrong person.”

The businessman looked disturbed.

“And Samuel knew who it was?”

Before the woman could answer—

BANG!

A loud noise came from the tunnel.

The police officer swung his flashlight toward it.

The beam revealed an empty passage.

But the footsteps had stopped.

Then Lily noticed something else.

A small envelope had appeared on the floor.

It hadn't been there before.

The envelope was old and dusty.

Written across it in Samuel Okon's handwriting were five words:

“FOR THE FIFTH PERSON.”

Everyone stared at it.

The principal's face went pale.

“The fifth person…”

Lily remembered the warning from the diary.

WHEN THE FIFTH PERSON ARRIVES, RUN.

She slowly counted the people standing around her.

The businessman.

The principal.

The police officer.

The elderly woman.

The elderly man.

And herself.

Lily stepped backward.

“Wait…”

Everyone looked at her.

“There are already six of us.”

The police officer's flashlight suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went completely dark.

A cold voice whispered from the tunnel:

“You counted wrong.”

Lily's blood ran cold.

A shadow appeared at the entrance.

Then another.

Then another.

Several figures were approaching.

The businessman grabbed Lily's hand.

“Run!”

But before they could move, the cassette recorder suddenly switched on again.

Samuel Okon's voice filled the room.

This time, his voice sounded frightened.

> “Lily… if you're hearing this, they have already found you.”

The recording crackled.

Then Samuel said something that made Lily's entire body freeze.

> “The person you believe is helping you… is the one who knows where your mother disappeared.”

The recording stopped.

Everyone turned toward one another.

No one spoke.

And then—

The elderly man slowly looked at the businessman.

The businessman noticed.

“Why are you looking at me?”

The elderly man said nothing.

Lily looked between them, confused.

Then she noticed the silver butterfly locket around her neck.

It had begun to glow faintly.

She touched it.

A tiny hidden compartment suddenly opened.

Inside was a miniature photograph.

Lily pulled it out.

Her eyes widened.

It was a photograph of her mother…

standing beside the businessman.

And written on the back were the words:

“THE MAN WHO PROMISED TO SAVE US.”

Lily looked up at him.

Her voice trembled.

“Why are you in this picture?”

The businessman stared at the photograph.

For the first time since Lily had met him…

he looked genuinely terrified.

“I…”

He couldn't finish the sentence.

From the tunnel came a final whisper:

“Ask him what happened to your mother.”

🌸 THE SCHOLARSHIP GIRL🌸

CHAPTER 30 – THE LETTER FOR LILY

The underground vault had never felt so quiet.
Lily stood near the center of the room, still holding Samuel Okon's black leather diary against her chest.
The two brass keys hung from her fingers.
25.
26.
Behind her, the dark tunnel seemed to swallow every bit of light that reached it.
On the floor near the entrance lay the small black envelope.
Its golden words were impossible to ignore:
FOR LILY ONLY.
Lily stared at it.
She couldn't explain why, but something inside her told her that opening that envelope would change everything.
The businessman noticed her expression.
“Lily.”
She looked at him.
“Don't do anything until we know what's inside.”
Lily nodded slowly.
“But it has my name on it.”
“I know.”
“And Samuel Okon left it here.”
The businessman glanced at the diary.
“That doesn't mean it isn't dangerous.”
The principal stepped forward.
“We need to think carefully. We've already discovered enough secrets tonight to know that someone went to great lengths to hide the truth.”
The police officer looked toward the tunnel.
“And someone may still be inside this house.”
Everyone became silent.
The elderly woman lowered her eyes.
Lily noticed.
“Ma…”
The woman looked up.
“You know something, don't you?”
The elderly woman's lips trembled.
“I know more than I have told you.”
Lily took a step toward her.
“Then please tell me.”
The old woman looked at the businessman, then at the principal.
Finally, she whispered:
“Not yet.”
Lily's face fell.
“Why does everyone keep saying that?”
Her voice cracked.
“First the scholarship. Then the diary. Then this vault. Everyone seems to know something about my life except me!”
The businessman stepped closer.
“Lily…”
She wiped her eyes.
“No. I need answers.”
She turned toward the envelope.
“I'm opening it.”

THE LETTER
The police officer carefully examined the envelope before handing it to Lily.
“It's safe.”
Lily took it.
Her fingers trembled as she broke the red wax seal.
Inside was one carefully folded sheet of old paper.
At the top were three words:
DEAR LILY,
She stared at her name.
“How did he know I'd find this?”
The principal answered quietly.
“Because he expected someone to eventually reach this room.”
Lily unfolded the letter.
The handwriting was old but surprisingly neat.
She began reading.
Dear Lily,
If you are reading this, then the scholarship has brought you farther than I ever expected.
Lily stopped.
“The scholarship?”
She continued.
You probably believe the scholarship was created simply to help a poor student receive an education. That is only part of the truth.
The businessman exchanged a worried glance with the principal.
Lily continued.
The scholarship was created because one child needed protection.
Lily's heart sank.
“One child…”
She remembered the sentence from the diary.
The principal whispered:
Lily did.
I could not protect that child myself. So I created a system that would keep her safe without revealing why she had been chosen.
Lily looked up.
“Who was the child?”
Nobody answered.
Her eyes returned to the page.
If you have reached this point, you are old enough to know that your selection was never an accident.
Lily's breathing became heavier.
She read the next line.
You were chosen because of your connection to my greatest secret.
Lily froze.
“My connection?”
The businessman looked disturbed.
“What secret?”
Lily shook her head.
“I don't know.”

THE NAME
At the bottom of the page was a name.
Lily stared at it.
Samuel Okon.
Underneath it was another sentence:
Before you search for me, search for the person who knew your mother.
Lily's eyes widened.
“My mother?”
The elderly woman suddenly began crying.
Lily turned toward her.
“You knew my mother?”
The woman slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
Lily's voice became almost a whisper.
“How?”
The elderly woman looked away.
“She came to Samuel many years ago.”
“Why?”
The woman hesitated.
“Because she was afraid.”
The businessman stepped forward.
“Afraid of whom?”
The elderly woman shook her head.
“I don't know if I should say.”
Lily became frustrated.
“Everybody keeps saying that!”
She held up the letter.
“Samuel Okon left this for me. He mentioned my mother. If you know something, please tell me.”
The elderly woman finally looked directly into Lily's eyes.
“Your mother trusted Samuel Okon.”
Lily swallowed.
“And?”
“She believed he was the only person who could keep you safe.”
The vault fell silent.
THE HIDDEN PHOTOGRAPH
Suddenly, the elderly man spoke.
“There may be something else.”
Everyone turned toward him.
He walked slowly toward an old wooden chest.
With trembling hands, he opened it.
Inside were several faded photographs.
He searched through them until he found one.
He handed it to Lily.
She stared at the photograph.
It showed Samuel Okon standing beside a much younger woman.
Lily's eyes widened.
She recognized her immediately.
It was her mother.
For several seconds, Lily couldn't speak.
“My mother…”
The businessman looked at the photograph.
“When was this taken?”
The elderly man answered:
“Many years ago.”
Lily turned the photograph over.
There was writing on the back.
She read it aloud:
“If anything happens to me, protect my daughter.”
Her hands began shaking.
“Why would my mother write this?”
Nobody answered.
Then the principal noticed something else.
“There's another line.”
Lily looked again.
Beneath the first sentence were four words:

TRUST NO ONE.
A cold silence filled the vault.
The police officer immediately looked toward the tunnel.
SOMETHING MOVES
A faint sound came from the darkness.
Scrape.
Everyone turned.
The police officer raised his flashlight.
“Stay behind me.”
The beam disappeared into the tunnel.
Nothing.
The businessman moved Lily behind him.
The elderly woman grabbed the elderly man's arm.
Then another sound came.
Scrape… scrape…
Something was moving deeper inside.
Lily looked at the scattered diary pages on the floor.
One page had been blown slightly away from the others.
She walked toward it.
“Lily, wait!”
She picked it up.
It was another piece of Samuel Okon's diary.
The writing was only partially visible.
“The second key opens the vault.
The third key…”
The rest of the sentence had been torn away.
Lily stared at the missing section.
“The third key…”
The principal stepped closer.
“Perhaps the next clue is inside the tunnel.”
The police officer shook his head.
“Not tonight.”
But then Lily noticed something.
At the very bottom of the page was a tiny symbol.
A circle.
Inside it was the number:
27
Lily looked at the two keys in her hand.

Her eyes widened.
“Maybe the numbers aren't just numbers.”
The businessman looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Lily stared toward the tunnel.
“Maybe every number leads to another secret.”
THE FINAL MESSAGE
Before anyone could respond, the old cassette recorder on the table suddenly clicked.
Everyone turned.
The reels began spinning.
The red light came on.
CLICK… HISS…
Then a man's recorded voice filled the vault.
It was Samuel Okon.
“If you have found the letter, then you are closer than I ever was.”
Lily stepped toward the recorder.
Samuel continued:
“Lily, there is something I could not write in the letter.”
The recording crackled.
Everyone listened.
“The person who threatened your mother may still be alive.”
Lily's eyes widened.
The businessman looked toward the tunnel.
Samuel's voice continued:
“And if they discover that you have found this vault…”
The recording suddenly became distorted.
HISSSSSS…
Then the voice returned.
“…they will come for you.”
The cassette stopped.
Silence.
Lily stared at the recorder.
Then—
FOOTSTEPS.
Not from the vault.
Not from behind them.
From inside the tunnel.
Slow.
Heavy.
Getting closer.
THUD.
Everyone froze.
THUD.
The police officer raised his flashlight.
THUD.
Lily tightened her grip around the two keys.
At the far end of the tunnel…
a shadow slowly appeared.
Nobody could see the person's face.
Nobody knew who it was.
But the figure was walking toward them.
The businessman whispered:
“Lily… get behind me.”
Lily didn't move.
She stared into the darkness.
And then the stranger stopped.
A deep voice echoed through the tunnel:
“You should never have opened that vault.”
Lily's eyes widened.
The lantern beside her suddenly went out.
