There are some things in football that should NEVER be used for banter. 💔
Yesterday, during the Al-Taawoun vs Al-Hilal game in the Saudi League, some Al-Taawoun fans decided to get under Ruben Neves’ skin.
They started chanting “Jota! Jota! Jota!” over and over again, knowing exactly what they were doing.
They weren’t just chanting a footballer’s name.
They were mocking the death of Diogo Jota, someone Neves knew, played with and shared a genuine friendship with. 💔🕊️
As the chants continued, Neves simply pointed towards the sky — as if to say, “Jota is up there watching you.”
That moment broke my heart. 😔
After the match, Neves questioned how people could mock someone who had died and then go home to pray for blessings.
And honestly, he has a point.
Football is rivalry. Football is banter. Football is passion.
But death should never be part of the banter.
You can insult a player. You can mock his team. You can celebrate your victory.
But mocking someone’s loved one who has passed away? That is a line no football fan should cross.
Some things are bigger than football. 💔
May Diogo Jota continue to rest in peace. 🕊️
And yes… Al-Hilal answered on the pitch with a 6-0. 😭
