Amnesty International’s Misplaced Blame On IPOB Undermines Credibility And Justice

Recently, unknown gunmen attacked travelers in Owerri. Shockingly, without verified evidence, Amnesty International hastily attributed the incident to IPOB, a peaceful self-determination movement advocating for the freedom and dignity of over 70 million Biafrans across Nigeria.

It is important to note that Amnesty International does not maintain a physical office in the Southeast region, nor do its journalists operate consistently or closely with local communities in the area. Any credible investigation into such incidents should involve direct, on-the-ground engagement with eyewitnesses and community leaders. Instead, Amnesty International appears to be relying on reports from legacy Nigerian media outlets, many of which are aligned with political elites and often serve as instruments of state propaganda, some even with documented links to terrorist sympathizers.

Rather than highlighting the consistent human rights violations and terrorism act committed by Nigerian security forces against citizens, including the military and the Department of State Services (DSS), Amnesty International has taken a troubling stance: vilifying the oppressed and indirectly endorsing the actions of the oppressors. This bias not only undermines the group’s credibility but also poses a serious threat to justice and transparency in Nigeria.

IPOB has consistently maintained a peaceful stance in her struggle for self-determination. The Eastern Security Network (ESN), established by IPOB, is not a militia but a community vigilante group focused on protecting farmlands and rural communities from attacks by Fulani militants. ESN operatives are stationed in forests and bushes not cities, and are solely concerned with safeguarding Biafran lives and agricultural resources.

Therefore, the narrative being pushed by Amnesty International against IPOB and ESN is not only false, but dangerously misleading. It is a distortion of the truth, an attempt to vilify those defending their people while ignoring the real threats and injustices festering within the Nigerian state.

The attack against travelers along Okigwe-Owerri is similar to the event that happened in Obikoabia junction in Aba where the Nigeria government through their military staged an attack against their own soldiers using them as sacrificial lambs in their desperation to accuse the Indigenous People of Biafra as the offenders who deserve to be punished. Despite all this staged attacks against a people whose only crime is the demand to decide if they still want to continue to be part of Nigeria or choose to be sovereign and independent.

IPOB remain innocent of all accusations from the Nigeria biased media with the false narratives being peddled by Amnesty international.

The Nigerian military has once again resorted to intimidating Biafrans, because of IPOB's social media activities and urging Biafran youths to refrain from enlisting in the Nigerian military.

Since the army couldn't find IPOB members easily to eliminate on the streets of Biafraland, they are hurt that IPOB has awakened the consciousness in Biafrans to realize that Nigeria's unity and their peaceful existence pose a threat to the survival of Biafrans in that entity called Nigeria.

We require additional Biafrans to participate in this social media effort to inform our people that achieving Biafran freedom is the primary goal and dream of every south easterner.

This is why they are calling on Igbo youths to join the army. They wants to know those who are brave to defend their land. Remember They will never post you in the East to secure your community rather they will send you to the north and set you up to be ki11ed by fulani ter rọr ists. While they send fulanis to east to extort, humilate and even ki11 our youths. Instead of joining Nigeria army, it's better you start a vigilante group. Nnamdi Kanu: New Assigned judge and strong link with Nyson Wike

Justice James Kolawole Omotosho is a Nigerian judge serving at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria. Born on July 21, 1966, in Ajegunle, Lagos State, he hails from Ijemo-Abeokuta in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State. He pursued his legal education at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, earning a Bachelor of Law (LLB) with a Second Class Lower Division between 1990 and 1996.

He attended the Nigeria Law School in Victoria Island, Lagos, from 1996 to 1997, where he was called to the bar as a Barrister at Law (B.L.). Prior to his legal studies, he obtained a National Certificate of Education (NCE) in Economics and Business Management from Lagos State College of Education, Ijanikin (1987–1990), and completed his secondary education at Randle Secondary School in Apapa, Lagos (1980–1985).

Justice Omotosho has presided over several high-profile cases, gaining attention for his rulings in matters involving political, financial, and terrorism-related disputes.

Notable cases include:
Rivers State Governance Crisis: He has been involved in judicial decisions affecting Rivers State, such as voiding the 2024 Appropriation Bill presentation by Governor Siminalayi Fubara before a four-member legislature and declaring the governor’s actions in violation of a court order to maintain the status quo.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial: In March 2025, he was assigned to preside over the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following a reassignment from Justice Binta Nyako.

Financial Crime Cases: He has handled cases like the trial of former Acting Accountant General Anamekwe Nnabuoku for an alleged N1.96 billion fraud and the N80 billion money laundering case involving Ali Bello and Dauda Suleiman.

Political Party Disputes: He ruled in a case directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Sylvester Ezeokenwa as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), a decision criticized by Chief Edozie Njoku as conflicting with Supreme Court judgments.

His reinstatement of Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State

In that case, Justice Omotosho voided Shaibu's impeachment, citing the State House of Assembly's failure to comply with due process. He also awarded costs of ₦400,000 against the Edo State Government and the State Assembly

His rulings have sometimes sparked controversy, with accusations of bias and jurisdictional overreach. For instance, in the Rivers State crisis, critics argued that he and other judges exceeded Federal High Court jurisdiction by interfering in state matters. Additionally, groups like the Benue Coalition for Democracy have called for the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate him for alleged impunity, such as delaying the release of certified true copies of judgments. Despite these criticisms, he remains an active figure in Nigeria’s judiciary, handling complex legal disputes as of the current date, March 12, 2025.

Additionally, Justice Omotosho has faced allegations of partisanship and misconduct, particularly in cases related to Rivers State. The Nigerians in the United Kingdom Monitoring Council (NUK-MC) has urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate these allegations and take necessary action

IPOB is Hard to Crack, Chief of Defence Staff Lament , Explains Why IPOB Avoids Accepting Responsibility Of Violence in the South East

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has shed light on why the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) often refrains from claiming responsibility for violent incidents in the South East. Speaking to journalists, Musa outlined several strategic and political reasons behind this approach.

One of the key factors he highlighted is IPOB’s attempt to avoid legal and political consequences that could arise from being directly associated with violent acts. Claiming responsibility for such actions would subject the group to increased scrutiny from both the Nigerian government and international stakeholders, intensifying the challenges it already faces.

General Musa also pointed out that IPOB is keen on maintaining its public image as a peaceful movement advocating for the self-determination of Biafra. Under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB has frequently promoted non-violent methods such as peaceful protests and civil disobedience. Associating with violence, he noted, would undermine this narrative and potentially alienate supporters at home and abroad.

“Many foreign governments, human rights organizations, and sympathizers support IPOB's cause on the condition that it remains peaceful. Any admission of violence could lead to a loss of this critical support,” Musa remarked.

The CDS further explained that not all violent acts attributed to IPOB are necessarily carried out by the group. He noted the presence of rogue elements and splinter factions that may act independently, sometimes using IPOB’s name to legitimize their activities or create confusion. According to him, the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu has exacerbated leadership fragmentation, making it harder for IPOB’s central command to maintain control over its members and supporters.

Additionally, General Musa emphasized the role of external actors in manipulating narratives around violence in the South East. He accused some groups and individuals of exploiting the situation to discredit IPOB’s cause. “The government and security agencies have also used this ambiguity to portray IPOB as a terrorist organization, further complicating the group’s efforts to gain legitimacy,” he added.

Another reason for IPOB’s reluctance to claim responsibility, Musa noted, is the need to maintain strategic flexibility. By denying involvement in violent acts, the group leaves room for peaceful negotiations and diplomatic engagement, both domestically and internationally.

In conclusion, General Musa described IPOB’s approach as a calculated strategy aimed at preserving its image, avoiding legal repercussions, and keeping its movement open to political solutions. However, he urged the group to denounce violence more explicitly to ensure lasting peace in the region.
