Akpabio Assures Code of Conduct Bureau of Senate Support In Addressing Its Challenges

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has assured the board and management of the Code of Conduct Bureau(CCB) of the readiness and commitment of the Senate to addressing the challenges facing the Bureau.

Akpabio gave the assurance on Thursday when members of the Code of Conduct Bureau, led by its Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Bello, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

The Senate President acknowledged the relevance of the CCB, describing it as a "very important agency of government, not only in terms of bringing about moral rectitude but also in terms of discipline of public officers and ensuring accountability."

"We don't normally clear any public officer in the Senate unless we are assured that the person has attached acknowledgement form of his declaration of assets before the Code of Conduct Bureau.

"We are happy that you have enunciated the vision of what you want to do because if you don't have a conducive working environment, there is no way you could achieve much," Akpabio said.

On the complaint of inadequate budgetary allocation, the Senate President told the delegation that it had come to the right place and at the right time.

"We will engage those who are involved in bringing budgetary estimates before the National Assembly. We will engage them to let them know that the Code of Conduct Bureau cannot be stifled of fund otherwise it will not achieve much for the country.

"We have taken serious parliamentary note of your requests and we will definitely do something and get back to you as soon as possible.

"I assure you of our readiness to work with you and the entirety of the Bureau to achieve the aims for which the agency is set up. I appreciate this visit and I assure you of our collaboration," he said.

Earlier, the CCB chairman who led the delegation, Dr Abdullahi Bello told the Senate President of the many challenges facing the Bureau and pleaded for the intervention of the Senate.

The challenges, according to him, included inadequate funding and issues about office accommodation, manpower and logistics.

𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮'𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗪'𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝘀 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 - 𝗘𝗸𝗽𝗼

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), 𝗥𝘁. 𝗛𝗼𝗻. 𝗘𝗸𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗽𝗲 𝗘𝗸𝗽𝗼 has restated the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government in supporting the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) Project realize its full potential and objectives.

Ekpo stated this yesterday in his speech at the WAGP Authority Committee of Ministers (COM) meeting in Cotonou, Benin Republic assuring other member countries (Benin, Togo and Ghana) of uninterrupted gas supply from Nigeria to meet their domestic needs.

A statement by his spokesman, 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗯𝗮𝗵, quoted the minister as saying the Nigerian government targets strengthening the brotherhood of the West African sub-region and ensuring energy stability through the West African gas pipeline system.

"Nigeria is pursuing gas as a destination fuel, and therefore working through various initiatives to monitize its abundant natural gas resources. Some of the initiatives include the Decade of Gas that would develop and monitize over five billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) of gas for the domestic and export market; auto gas initiative such as the Presidential CNG programme, and the Nigerian Gas Expansion Programme geared at encouraging the switch from liquid fuel to gas for automobiles and many more.
"The above initiatives will ensure continuous supply of reliable gas to WAGP through the N-Gas Limited that has been the vehicle for commercializing the Eastern gas," Ekpo said.

The Gas Minister also pledged his support for N-Gas Ltd and other value chain participants, especially Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) to resolve the Escravos Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) pressure issues.

He said the NGIC is carrying out various projects that would address the ELPS pressure challenge including connecting the gas reach from the eastern region with the western and northern demand regions and installation of midline compressors that would provide total solution to the pressure challenges.

Ekpo said while efforts are being made to ensure adequate gas supply from Nigeria, it was important to highlight the need of payment performance to both N-Gas and WAPCO to ensure sustainable gas supply.
