FRSC APPLAUDS AKSG ON GOOD ROAD NETWORK
The Federal Road Safety Sector Commander in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Matthew Olonisaye has applauded the State Government for investing massively on good road network in the state .
Mr. Olonisaye made this known when he paid a Courtsey visit to the Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals, Sir. Charles Udoh in his office, Monday, 30th August, 2021.
He explained that good road network is important for achieving the aim of minimising crashes on the road, adding that Akwa Ibom State is one of the states in Nigeria with very low road crashes due to its good road infrastructure.
The sector Commander solicited for collaboration with the State Government to educate market traders along Itam, Akpan Andem, Ekom Iman, Aka road and Urua okpo - okpo markets to have value for their lives, explaining that these traders choose to display their wares on the road rather than the space provided them by the State Government.
Mr. Olonisaye used the occasion to commend the State Government through the ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals for tackling flood and erosion in the state while observing that in rainy season such as this, Atiku Abubakar and IBB roads is flooded which could be hazardous to motorist and other road users.
He also decried the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road and called on the State Government to increase waste bin in the state as well as come up with strict measures against those who dump waste on the floor instead of the waste bin provided.
Responding, the Hon Commissioner Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals, Sir. Charles Udoh said the State Government through the ministry is ready to partner with stakeholders to ensure a safety environment as government alone in any part of the world cannot handle the issues of safe and healthy environment.
Sir. Udoh who described the State Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel as kind hearted and sincere about development, assured the Federal Road Safety Corps that flood along Atiku Abubakar and IBB roads which lasted over 15 years will become a thing of the past.
Environment Boss restated that over 14billion naira has been invested to evacuate the water along Atiku Abubakar, IBB and other major roads in the State tackling flood in over 8km discharge point which cut across 17communities in 3 Local Government Areas in the state .
The Hon Commissioner who is well vested in Environmental matters further enlightened Federal Road Safety Corps team that besides IBB flood control, government also tackle erosion at Etim Umana and Anua Offot.
He revealed that Akwa Ibom State is one of the few states that is using state money to fight erosion menace while liaising with the ecological fund office to get funds to tackle erosion problems in the state.
On the display of wares on the road by the traders, "the Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals has carried out lots of sensitization on the illegal market across the state".
He said that ministry of Environment is working hand-in-hand to ensure that disposal of waste across the state is well managed and the populace educated on indiscriminate disposal of refuse on the road.
