Akwa Ibom FA Hails Gov. Eno Over Payment of Governor’s Cup Prize Money
The Akwa Ibom State Football Association (AKSFA) has expressed deep appreciation to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, for redeeming and doubling the prize money for winners of the 2023/2024 Governor’s Cup.
Speaking after a brief presentation ceremony held Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, AKSFA Chairman, Mr. Samuel Umoh, commended the Governor for not only bringing back the prestigious grassroots competition but also significantly increasing the prize fund.
“It was definitely worth the wait,” Mr. Umoh said. “The teams not only received their promised prizes but got double the original amounts. I sincerely thank Governor Umo Eno for reviving this great tournament and for fulfilling his promise with such generosity. His commitment has now set the stage for another exciting edition of the competition.”
The Chairman also praised the Governor for using football as a tool for youth engagement and development. “I urge everyone, government, private sector, and individuals to continue creating platforms for football growth. It’s a key way to empower our youths, steer them away from social vices, and uplift Akwa Ibom to a place of honour,” he said.
Speaking further, Mr. Umoh hailed the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, for the positive changes taking place under his leadership.
“We’re seeing real, impactful development not just in football, but in other sports as well. Elder Bassey’s approach has been practical and visionary. I’m confident that under his watch, more glory days lie ahead for sports in Akwa Ibom,” the FA boss added.
Governor Umo Eno, represented by the Sports Commissioner, handed over cheques to the winning local government areas (LGAs), rewarding them for their outstanding performance in the last tournament. Team Ikot Abasi, who won the competition after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Uyo, received N10 million, while Uyo got N6 million, and third-placed Urue-Offong/Oruko received N4 million, double the original prize money.
At the event, the Commissioner explained that the delay in prize distribution was due to administrative processes involved in adjusting the prize structure. “The Governor’s decision to double the prize amounts meant we had to recalibrate the payment process,” he said. “But it was all to the benefit of the teams.”
He also highlighted the success of the Governor’s Cup in unearthing fresh talent. “Many of the players who featured for their LGAs are now playing professionally in Nigeria and even overseas. That’s a huge achievement.”
