The Executive Chairman of ONNA Local Government Area, Hon. Kufre Umoren, has paid tribute to Nigeria’s ex-servicemen and fallen heroes for their selfless sacrifices in safeguarding the lives of citizens and preserving the nation’s territorial integrity.
Hon. Umoren made the remarks on Sunday during a church service held to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at Christ Apostolic Freedom Church, Ikot Ese Ishiet, ONNA Local Government Area.
In his address, the Chairman described the occasion as a solemn moment of reflection and gratitude, stressing the importance of remembering those who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of deceased members of the Armed Forces and urged them to remain strong in the face of their loss.
“It is a solemn moment to remember those who stood watch for our safety while we slept in our homes. The people of ONNA join others across the world in honouring these brave men and women, whose sacrifices remain one of the key reasons Nigeria continues to stand strong as one indivisible nation,” he said.
Hon. Umoren, who was in company of his Wife, Mrs Precious Abasiamakufre Umoren and family members, also paid glowing tribute to the Church for its role in his early upbringing, noting that it played a significant part in shaping his character. He recalled with fondness the lasting memories of his childhood and formative years spent within the Church.
The Chairman further used the occasion to invite residents to the Local Government Secretariat on Thursday, 15 January 2026, for the official Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, ONNA Chapter, Sergeant John Bassey, thanked God for the preservation of the lives of Legion members and expressed appreciation to the Kufre Umoren-led administration for its continued support. He also paid tribute to Nigeria’s veterans, describing them as “the silent foundation of the nation’s stability.”
The event was attended by prominent stakeholders and senior officials of ONNA Local Government Area, led by the Vice Chairman, Lady Mfon Uko. Others in attendance included the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Samuel Felix; the Secretary of Council, Arc. Mfon Akpabio; the Paramount Ruler of ONNA, His Royal Majesty Raymond Timothy Inyang, accompanied by his wife; and the Chief Protocol Officer to the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Edmond Uffang.
Also present were the Dean of Supervisors, Mrs Mary Udonsek, alongside other supervisors; Ward Personal Assistants to the Governor, led by Elder Ekerete Ituen; the Head of Service, Mrs Veronica Orok; the PDP Chapter Chairman, Hon. (Elder) Kingsley Johnny; DG of Great Grace Campaign, Elder Nelson Ntia; a representative of the APC Chapter Chairman, Hon. Emmanuel Ekpeyo; the Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, Prince Ifiok Umoren; the District Governor of the Lions Club, Pastor Ezekiel Umo; former Chairmen, Rt. Hon. Imo Attat and Hon. Ekerete Udoekpo; as well as heads of security agencies in ONNA Local Government Area.
