The Executive Chairman of ONNA Local Government Area, Hon. Kufre Umoren, has called on Nigerians to continually honour the sacrifices of the nation's fallen heroes and to support serving and retired military personnel, describing the peace we enjoy today as a price paid through courage and sacrifice.

The Chairman made the call on Thursday, 15th January, 2025 at Abat while delivering his address at the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony.

He reflected on the pain, bravery, and selflessness of men and women who laid down their lives in defence of the country, noting that behind Nigeria’s freedom are untold stories of soldiers who never returned home and families who bore the heavy cost of duty.

He assured veterans and the families of fallen heroes of the local government's commitment to their welfare, stressing that remembrance must go beyond ceremonial observances to include practical support and compassion.

Hon. Umoren also commended traditional rulers, religious leaders and security agencies for their roles in sustaining peace and unity in ONNA Local Government Area.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, ONNA Chapter, Sergeant B. J. Paul, on behalf of the Legion, welcomed dignitaries to the grand finale of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration.

He noted that the event was not only to observe annual rituals but also to reflect on the sacrifices of past heroes and to contribute meaningfully to the families they left behind.

He further solicited prayers for members of the Legion, revealing that more than ten members were lost in the past year.

The ceremony featured prayers and the laying of wreaths in honour of departed heroes, as the Chairman reaffirmed ONNA’s resolve to remember, honour and never forget those who paid the ultimate price for Nigeria.

The Executive Chairman of ONNA Local Government Council, Hon. Kufre Umoren, on Friday, January 9, 2026, led members of the executive council, legislative arm, political stakeholders and traditional rulers in formally dedicating the year 2026 to God at a thanksgiving service.

The service, themed "Thou Art Worthy, O Lord," was held at the Council Hall and organized to express gratitude to God for His faithfulness in the past year, while also seeking divine guidance and direction for the year ahead.

Addressing the congregation, Hon. Umoren explained that the thanksgiving service was deliberately organized to acknowledge God's grace upon the administration throughout the previous year and to commit the affairs of the local government into God's hand for the new year.

"I thank God for the past year. Throughout the year, the council recorded no casualties. It is only by His mercy that we are all alive to see a new year with everyone intact," the Chairman stated.

He noted that God had remained faithful to the council in the past year and acknowledged the increasing expectations and responsibilities that come with the year 2026, stressing that only divine guidance would enable the administration to meet those expectations.

Hon. Umoren urged residents and stakeholders to always participate in gatherings organized for the development and progress of the local government, regardless of political party affiliation, emphasizing that such events are for the collective good of ONNA and not for partisan interests.

He further disclosed that 2026 would be the final year the council would host major events in the old Council Hall, assuring that a new 1,500 capacity ultra-modern hall would be completed and commissioned for use before this time next year.

The thanksgiving service featured a powerful ministration by Rev. Titus John Akpan of the United Evangelical Church, who took his Bible reading from Psalms 50:23 and emphasized the importance of gratitude and obedience in securing God’s continued presence and blessings.
